You typically = need to be root to do package management commands. Please post the exact command you are trying to run and the messages you = get in response. It's a version of FreeBSD specially packaged to be easy for people new to BSD: http://www.pcbsd.org/ You can get FreeBSD to behave the way you want, but it doesn't do so out of the box.
