I found a couple of issues on Github that mentioned the feature, ( https://github.com/freebsd/pkg/issues/1276 and https://github.com/freebsd/pkg/issues/805) but they are both over a year old at this point. This is a crucial feature to binary package management, not only because it saves disk space, but because it enhances security. For example, any package depending on MySQL will usually choose to install mysql56-client which is marked as vulnerable and will never be patched. Is anyone currently working on implementing this? I "locked" pkg in place, did a "pkg update -f && pkg upgrade -f" and rebooted. It actually worked, but I'm always wondering if that is really such a good idea. I build my own packages from the quarterly cuts of the ports-tree and fix the defaults of apache, php et.al to certain versions and generally try to stick to them for the whole of the major release-cycle (and I always built for the oldest supported release of that version), so there's little chance of having to do a major version downgrade on the application-side. So I think we should use current provides/requires mechani= sm > > in the > > mean time. > > > > To use them the only issue in on the ports tree itself > > > > Best regards, > > Bapt > > > What are the differences between flexible dependencies and the current > provides/requires implementation? What needs to be done to the ports tree > to allow for the use of provides/requires? Current provides/requires are basic keywords that should exactly match Flexible dependencies is a formula like php > 9 < 9.5, libmysql.so.X; gmake =3D 12 All the current form of dependencies (shlibs, provides/requires, regular de= ps) can be expressed in a single form without the need of special treatment. To implements in ports the goal is to add everywhere in the ports things informations that will be exposed in the manifest as provides: [ X, Y, Z] and a way to express when requiring X, the default build package will be li= bX but will not be registered as a deps because the requires line in the manif= est will handle the deps. Noone really started working on the port side.
