Out of curiosity, is there a specific reason that the lang/python3* ports all include various __pycache__ bits while these were not present, at least, in lang/python27? I ask because this seems to be a decent amount of fat added to the resulting packages that I'd rather not have in the environments of some personal applications I am developing, and I don't particularly see a need that they these directories need to stick around. Space is, unfortunately, an issue that I worry about. =) Thanks, Kyle Evans From owner-freebsd-python@freebsd.org Mon Dec 12 20:58:30 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-python@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0B60CC73033 for ; Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E700E1EB9 for ; Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id E37F6C73030; Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:29 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: python@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E3267C7302F for ; Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id CF4641EB4 for ; Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id uBCKwTJA068432 for ; Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:29 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: python@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 214893] www/py-kallithea: Fix RC script Date: Mon, 12 Dec 2016 20:58:29 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Ports & Packages X-Bugzilla-Component: Individual Port(s) X-Bugzilla-Version: Latest X-Bugzilla-Keywords: easy, needs-qa X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: rene@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: In Progress X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: rene@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: maintainer-feedback+ merge-quarterly? If space is a major=20 concern for you (but a small drawback in runtime performance is not), let us=20 know, so we put it up on the agenda (again). In some of my environments, it definitely is a concern. In one or two applications, I have limited disk size to work with but a lot of memory to otherwise operate on -- so these things being created at runtime isn't much issue, but having them on disk tends towards problematic. Given that this is not a very 'black or white' problem (as evident from the CompiledPackages wiki page), I will strip these entries from the pkg-plist myself for the time being and maybe work on finding time to assist in a better solution for the whole. Note that they will be re-created on import unless one overrides the default for the interpreter to produce these optimization files. I'm not sure (or cant remember) if there is a good way to disable this on a global or system-wide basis. I second Marcus's comment that being able to not have to package optimized files and have them be created (optionally?) at package post-install time instead, would be a good thing overall TM. Depends. Those modules are installed in a root owned directory, and the bytecode cache will get created only if you run (import is enough as you say) those modules as root, because the cache is written in the module package directory. So pre-packaging the bytecode is a form of optimization, as the bytecode will be there when you run it as an unprivileged user. -- Vlad K. My main point was that if disk utilisation is something one wants to minimise (at deployment), that one would need to be able to turn the optimization knob off each time (or system-wide) and that that would be a handy thing to know and do. Personally, I'd love if Python could specify a base dir for bytecode cache, but it seems that's not gonna happen: https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0304/ > Said another way, even if we (FreeBSD) de-packaged optimization files > which we want to do, that that *by itself* that would only save package > repository size and bandwidth, not deployment size. But in reality, what kind of gain/loss are we talking about here? I'm guessing it's pretty insignificant in this day and age, even for embedded? -- Vlad K. Yeah, I was aware of this -- my response to mva@ mentioned that runtime creation is ok. =) What I'm really trying to go for (and still working out the details -- still planning, decent amount of time before implementation), is going to have a small-disk constraint (Think < 1GB), but a decent amount of memory. What I *really* want to do that I haven't even started to work out the logistics on is effectively overlay this disk into memory with no writing back to disk. Something similar to a nullfs with copy-on-write semantics is what I was hoping for, but that doesn't seem to be easy to accomplish. Sounds like you could use mdconfig to create a ram disk that is writeable by the user and unionfs it over the non-writable fs I haven't used it but man mount_unionfs says it is not fully supported - there is sysutils/fusefs-unionfs that could be an option. -- FreeBSD - the place to B...Software Developing Shane Ambler From owner-freebsd-python@freebsd.org Wed Dec 14 09:11:44 2016 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-python@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1220DC7584C for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from portscout@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (unknown [127.0.1.3]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F3A841F05 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from portscout@FreeBSD.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id F303EC75843; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: python@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F0EE9C75841 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from portscout@FreeBSD.org) Received: from portscout.ysv.freebsd.org (portscout.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:6]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E44231F04 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from portscout@FreeBSD.org) Received: from portscout.ysv.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.123]) by portscout.ysv.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id uBE9Bh7q018659 for ; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 GMT (envelope-from portscout@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from portscout@localhost) by portscout.ysv.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id uBE9Bh3I018650; Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 GMT (envelope-from portscout@FreeBSD.org) Message-Id: <201612140911.uBE9Bh3I018650@portscout.ysv.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: portscout.ysv.freebsd.org: portscout set sender to portscout@FreeBSD.org using -f Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Content-Type: text/plain MIME-Version: 1.0 Date: Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:43 +0000 From: portscout@FreeBSD.org To: python@freebsd.org Subject: FreeBSD ports you maintain which are out of date X-Mailer: portscout/0.8.1 X-BeenThere: freebsd-python@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: FreeBSD-specific Python issues List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 14 Dec 2016 09:11:44 -0000 Dear port maintainer, The portscout new distfile checker has detected that one or more of your ports appears to be out of date. It's got Python 2.7, and py-setuptools27 on it, both I believe dependencies of the mysql56-server which I'm also running. I have updated my ports to the latest, and done a system upgrade with portmaster. When the process gets to compiling py-setuptools27 as a dependency of python27 it bombs out.
