Do you have any custom build options for a loader used in the guest?
E.g. something like LOADER_BZIP2_SUPPORT in src.conf.

Also, "vm destroy" does not destroy VMs, if they have snapshots:

# vm destroy my-test1
Are you sure you want to completely remove this virtual machine (y/n)? y
/usr/local/sbin/vm: ERROR: failed to destroy ZFS dataset d02/vm/my-test1
# zfs destroy d02/vm/my-test1
cannot destroy 'd02/vm/my-test1': filesystem has children
use '-r' to destroy the following datasets:
d02/vm/my-test1@2016-07-30-23:37:34
#

I think "vm destroy" should always destroy the VM no matter the snapshots
and dependent clones.

Hello,

Are there any plans to make stable port/package of OpenStack on FreeBSD? :-)

I have seen this nice article that first steps are already made:
http://empt1e.blogspot.com/2015/06/openstack-on-freebsdxen-proof-of-concept.html

It would be really nice to build this kind of cloud infrastructure on
top of FreeBSD :-)

Best regards :-)
Tomek

Short answer: no.

Long answer: No, there are currently no plans to support FreeBSD in
OpenStack. There was a blueprint to begin introducing support for compute
in Nova, but that was shelved a couple years ago, with no interested
parties (read: corporate sponsors) with the desire and skill to do so.

I understand this isn't the answer you're seeking, but this topic has been
visited a few times in the past, with no real movement.

I have not seen any traction on getting FreeBSD support working on
OpenStack even when talking/working with several OpenStack commercial
vendors. IMHO - if this is something that people see a need for I would
start by focusing on seeing what the state of libvirt is on FreeBSD and
bhyve. I have lost track of where the libvirt code base is in terms of
bhyve support.

Another two bits...I've worked on OpenStack for several years now and
the only opinion I have of it at this point is that we are probably
lucky to not support it. The code base is a horrible mess, with lots of
Linux'isms baked into it. Yet even if you are running OpenStack on a
fully supported platform like RHEL you will still need to do quite a bit
of hacking to make it work in your environment. I've even seen vendors
check in untested code in the primary github repositories causing a fair
amount of headaches.

In light of this I reckon there is room for an alternative to OpenStack
in the market...hopefully one based on a cleaner implementation :)

Cheers,
-pete

*Assuming* the issue is related to userboot.so size, building with -Os shou=
ld
help. If you could try the patch from https://reviews.freebsd.org/D7600, it
would help to confirm this hypothesis.

There was an effort some time ago to get the Compute service working with
FreeBSD: https://github.com/Semihalf/openstack-nova

This spawned a blueprint in Nova (
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/nova/+spec/freebsd-compute-node) which
gained no traction during the Icehouse cycle, and was never implemented.
The Nova code needs rework, and people, to be accepted, and probably
wouldn't be until at least Ocata.

--- Comment #4 from Toomas Soome <tsoome@freebsd.org> ---
The fix is posted as https://reviews.freebsd.org/D7635 but also note the bug
this one is depending on - for full fix, you need both.

New revision: 304754
URL: https://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/base/304754

Log:
Bug 212038 - svn commit: r304321 broken bhyve zvol VM bhyveload hang 100%
WCPU

As the support for large blocks was enabled in loader zfs code, the
heap in userboot was left not changed, resulting with failure of detecting
and accessing zfs pools for bhyve virtual machines.

This fix does set the heap to use same amount of memory as the zfsloader
is using. To make it possible to test and verify loader functions, bhyve
is providing very useful option, but it also means, we like to keep featu=
re
parity with [zfs]loader as close as possible.

Hi All,

Not sure this is the appropriate list for cloud vendor specific questions,
but anyhoo...

The FreeBSD 11-RC1 release notes had a line:

"o Google Compute Engine image publication has been fixed."

Where can I find out more about this? Will we have official FreeBSD images
published for GCE?

Thank you,
Jev

Running:

$ gcloud compute images list --project=3Dfreebsd-org-cloud-dev

should show you this line in the output:

 freebsd-11-0-rc2-amd64 freebsd-org-cloud-dev READY

Short answer (and best I can provide at the moment) is, we hope so.

Glen

Hi Tomek,

This blog post was written by me and I had an intention to add FreeBSD
support into OpenStack back then.

At this point I've sort of dropped the ball on this idea (for now at
least). Technically, it's not very complicated task to get OpenStack
working with libvirt/Xen/FreeBSD backend (a little more complicated in
libvirt/bhyve case, but mainly because bhyve misses some features needed
by OpenStack).

Practically, OpenStack development process is quite fast and new
features submission is complex (IMHO).

1. It requires blueprint/spec submission for new features. This usually
spawns a discussion and it's necessary to re-iterate on the spec
several times before it gets accepted.

Additionally, FreeBSD support would require a number of specs for
several components (nova, neutron and maybe cinder to start with),
and additionally specs for refactoring of the current code for
portability (and that needs to go in line with other work that's
   happening in those components).

2. There should be a 3rd party CI for FreeBSD that requires time to
setup and maintain and hardware to run on.

So I decided that's not something that I have enough free time to work
on.

Ah so its lots of work ahead and seems like a big project.. with no
manpower or funding as Samuel mentioned it will not happen fast.

I will try to work with FreeBSD inside OpenStack and see how it works first..

Thank you for all hints and great work!! :-)
