This bug exists in both UEFI and Legacy mode, and existed as earl= y as 9.1-RELEASE. Keep in mind that I have an aftermarket SSD (SanDisk X400 512GB 2.5") in this laptop. I also have this issue when booting from USB. Shutdow= ns work fine. Another laptop, a HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G1 (which is my primary FreeBSD machine) also has a SanDisk M.2 SSD (SD6SN1M-256G-1006) although this SanDi= sk is a HP OEM part, and the 1040 not have this issue. My desktop (homebuilt, Asus H87M-E motherboard) also has a SanDisk SSD (ReadyCache 64GB, don't remember exact model number) used for a ZFS cache, = and the desktop does not have any problems with FreeBSD reboots either. All 3 systems have UEFI with Secure Boot disabled and CSM enabled (in a hyb= rid UEFI/BIOS mode). Keep in mind that both laptops and the desktop are personal (i.e. owned by = me), the Dell is used for schoolwork and internship and the HP is used for perso= nal stuff (including Port maintenance). I am hoping that I can use FreeBSD for = my schoolwork as well instead of Linux and don't want to use my EliteBook for schoolwork. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Sun Dec 24 00:06:44 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 3D3DFE83C8C for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:06:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 2B3A07CF79 for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:06:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBO06hR1025247 for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:06:44 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224557] [acpi] FreeBSD 12-CURRENT r327038 on Dell Inspiron 7352: Reboot results in blank screen Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:06:44 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: linimon@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-acpi@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: assigned_to Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:06:44 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224557 Mark Linimon changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Assignee|freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org |freebsd-acpi@FreeBSD.org --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Sun Dec 24 00:28:31 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AEB68E8556D for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:28:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9C9917D955 for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:28:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBO0SVB0078687 for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:28:31 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:28:31 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: dougm@rice.edu X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2017 00:28:31 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #7 from Doug Moore --- I don't have the means to reproduce this bug. By contrast, the same sources used to cross build via devel/powerpc64-xtoolchain-gcc produces a kernel for which the same world (not updated) dynamically loads kernel modules just fine (including via kldload or via geom_label_load=3D"YES" in /boot/loader.conf ). Both cases are using: devel/powerpc64-binutils because (A) lld does not work for powerpc64 built via clang last I knew and (B) the system binutils do not work for that kind of context either. I'll note that for TARGET_ARCH=3Dpowerpc clang 5 and the system binutils do not work together. There is no devel/powerpc-binutils and last I knew lld did not work for powerpc yet. So I've not tested a clang based kernel for it. A gcc 4.2.1 based kernel does not have the problem. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Sun Dec 24 11:25:25 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 04784E8765E for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 11:25:25 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E665875262 for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 11:25:24 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBOBPOTJ024540 for ; Sun, 24 Dec 2017 11:25:24 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2017 11:25:24 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: wosch@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 24 Dec 2017 11:25:25 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #9 from Wolfram Schneider --- (In reply to Wolfram Schneider from comment #4) I do not see the kernel panic if there are more than 100MB swap space in us= e. In particular comments #7 and #8 that quote Konstantin Belousov on the subject (or reference his material). Part of the text says: As result, swapfile swapping is more prone to the trivial and unavoidable deadlocks where the pagedaemon thread, which produces free memory, needs more free memory to make a progress. Swap write on the raw partition over simple partitioning scheme directly over HBA are usually safe, while e.g. zfs over geli over umass is the worst construction. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Mon Dec 25 09:36:49 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id F3A77EAA6CC for ; Mon, 25 Dec 2017 09:36:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E22547E114 for ; Mon, 25 Dec 2017 09:36:49 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBP9anFA066652 for ; Mon, 25 Dec 2017 09:36:49 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Mon, 25 Dec 2017 09:36:49 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: wosch@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: blocked Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 25 Dec 2017 09:36:50 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 Wolfram Schneider changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blocks| |206048 Referenced Bugs: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D206048 [Bug 206048] 11.0-CURRENT -r293227 (and others) arm (rpi2/BeagleBone Black) amd64 etc: swapfile usage hangs; swap partition works --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Tue Dec 26 13:41:37 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1A958E8F18C for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 13:41:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 08BCE75A08 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 13:41:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBQDfZa2054604 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 13:41:35 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224103] A possible out of bounds of memory in netinet/libalias/alias_sctp.c. Unlike automountd where the daemon is daemonized or lesser-daemonized, an automount process isn't necessarily at /, and this results in creating unneeded directories at the current directory. In the example below, mounting autofs on /mnt/media fails because the command mkdirs mnt/media instead of /mnt/media. If /mnt/media already exists the command can mount autofs on /mnt/media, but it still mkdirs unneeded directories mnt/media. Calling chdir("/") before creation and restoring the directory after creation avoids this. -- [root@]~# automount -L /mnt/media -nosuid -media # indi= rect map referenced at /etc/auto_master:8 [root@]~# ls mnt ls: mnt: No such file or directory [root@]~# automount automount: cannot mount map -media on /mnt/media: No such file or directory [root@]~# mount | grep autofs [root@]~# ls mnt media [root@]~# tree mnt mnt `-- media --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Tue Dec 26 19:54:08 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 09836EABA0E for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 19:54:08 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id EA70A64B6C for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 19:54:07 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBQJs71h085122 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 19:54:07 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224601] autofs: Make automount(8) call chdir("/") before create_directory() Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2017 19:54:08 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: linimon@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: keywords Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2017 19:54:08 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224601 Mark Linimon changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keywords| |patch --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Tue Dec 26 21:12:43 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BCC83E82FA9 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:12:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id A87726789E for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:12:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBQLCgb6003219 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:12:43 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:12:42 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: kib@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:12:43 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #11 from Konstantin Belousov --- I do not quite understand what a cause for the complain is. If the system cannot get the swapped out page data on swapoff, this means that the data is corrupted. Preventing further user data corruption by panicing is a normal reaction. In the case of the swap file on the unmounted filesystem, this is expected = mode of failure. Unmount reclaims the vnode, making all io to fail, putting the system into situation described in the previous paragraph. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Tue Dec 26 21:33:12 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DEEACE843C8 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:33:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fernando.apesteguia@gmail.com) Received: from mail-lf0-x235.google.com (mail-lf0-x235.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:4010:c07::235]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 66CE6684F2 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:33:12 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from fernando.apesteguia@gmail.com) Received: by mail-lf0-x235.google.com with SMTP id c19so20730754lfg.3 for ; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 13:33:12 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=GuATvt94JTv+8pzMDkTdkJTGNcbyaKwjvPwMhmsGYCw=; b=JhC2UZpzktQEFPUvC5wbJf0Ljymrqmfh/10/H28IOsPrJwKk1g3gZ56ZycyMZLdBqa t03OcqTAufzZ6skmRAJYFlqr/tZ9r69TLcQ+RnwF0c/lcIgFHP0nwl17skFsjiom9UFT jpKVG5s1F7/ORJspss0qNg+5NF4nXnYJ4oTNBJq0xbFfJKDPyisjt2NNxO7Eu6mMu6q5 IvrZ+4gCid24NxiTviR+dpUT0PFs2Ne2XBZB1eb1CT/8hpV2vAKCntOXZ6fBH+3rKC0/ vogP64wdcDqK4gwHsApqZ04TA1HLgmAcpCf2mTotSkovYQ8717lUfFYcSQeyF3YJEknu +F7A== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=GuATvt94JTv+8pzMDkTdkJTGNcbyaKwjvPwMhmsGYCw=; b=cqsmDbDDN7/ZjXZFrAGvIqBIAm1KRRu+cEw57LJD/39mhbjpodwJv5KmWj/ZFtWwXs wVTNVEuvQMWesGPucAEcAxy9xUS4hiSVidjS4BZsHeL1UmqVWuewljI7ubLvrDxV90oK TykB1JH2FMoQDjGQIeBH7p/k+3puXUA1jQFgP5K6ZnBqXJyIDY6gpk8j6XLM1qGDyn/K fTscqxg4p06ICg3cxrSua4wdv+NUyq/h9rBuI/fr8I0f9aiQCm9Y1n0dAWWnLu7/3udA C4XqE0EOqJzsxjwuXyb4K+ZhTPpMkTpSO3xbRKkAqvqYOUJKxFkWpZ64DJjrqxEu4JMQ tkVw== X-Gm-Message-State: AKGB3mKamw4Mv7vYnqvmRSOFNxyS8rDpZ5M1umb7dGS2HQFnR6oPP9+F qpIJWWyIldUB85MrbxWa+ubUPhBbTe4QvGgJc5DMhA== X-Google-Smtp-Source: ACJfBotBXxiCI2S9RYQFvGR4DpcDpTZete0Cu9AzIK/2jH+l86lE0Tdim5QwWxwQ+Cj0p5aBKANUuVi9kjYmmSa2pBg= X-Received: by 10.25.22.82 with SMTP id m79mr15968082lfi.20.1514323990090; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 13:33:10 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.25.19.219 with HTTP; Tue, 26 Dec 2017 13:33:09 -0800 (PST) From: =?UTF-8?Q?Fernando_Apestegu=C3=ADa?= Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2017 22:33:09 +0100 Message-ID: Subject: Close PR 128616 To: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2017 21:33:13 -0000 This has been fixed long ago. https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=128616 Cheers. The attached patch brings the logic in EVFILT_READ in sync with poll(2) again. I wonder why the other side of the pipe is also checked in EVFILT_READ. Wouldn't it be enough to just check for EOF on the readers side? This would= be consistent with sockets for example (where just SBS_CANTRCVMORE leads to EV_EOF). I've also attached a small patch to the pipepoll.c regression test that can= be used to reproduce the issue. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Wed Dec 27 14:16:53 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 526F5E8FD8A for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 14:16:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 400D667450 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 14:16:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBREGrj7000237 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 14:16:53 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224615] [PATCH] kevent: EVFILT_READ returns EV_EOF on named pipe when it should not Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2017 14:16:53 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: jan.kokemueller@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: attachments.created Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2017 14:16:53 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224615 --- Comment #1 from Jan Kokem=C3=BCller --- Created attachment 189131 --> https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=3D189131&action= =3Dedit patch to pipepoll.c demonstrating the issue --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Wed Dec 27 19:51:21 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 713C9EA939E for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 19:51:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 5F1D2737C3 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 19:51:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBRJpL5k088907 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 19:51:21 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2017 19:51:21 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: wosch@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2017 19:51:21 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #12 from Wolfram Schneider --- (In reply to Konstantin Belousov from comment #11) the complain is: I built and installed a new kernel on 12-current. I ask because the man page for reboot says that reboot does not cleanly shut down all processes, recommending the use of shutdown instead: Normally, the shutdown(8) utility is used when the system needs to be halted or restarted, giving users advance warning of their impending d= oom and cleanly terminating specific programs. So, reboot is documented to be more likely to have race conditions. Side note: Going the other direction, given what is known about file-system swapspaces (i.e., vnode-backed), I'm not sure why they are allowed by default instead of needing support to be explicitly enabled. (The enabling indicating that one is supposed to understand the issues involved in their use.) --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Wed Dec 27 22:32:17 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 58647E82281 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 22:32:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4669A7B948 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 22:32:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBRMWGNw070425 for ; Wed, 27 Dec 2017 22:32:17 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224270] Get exit status of process that's piped to another: set -o pipefail is missing for /bin/sh Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2017 22:32:17 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: jilles@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Wed, 27 Dec 2017 22:32:17 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224270 --- Comment #5 from Jilles Tjoelker --- The pipefail option was proposed for POSIX at http://austingroupbugs.net/view.php?id=3D789 but this discussion seems to be stalled. Apart from the SIGPIPE issue, it was pointed out that shell options interact poorly with functions since they are dynamically scoped (for examp= le, set -o pipefail; cmd1 | cmd2 | cmd3; r=3D$?; set +o pipefail not only affects this pipe's exit status, but also everything done by cmd1, cmd2 and cmd3 if they are functions). If swap storage is revoked, the swap in procedure panics. I am not sure that trying to convert this situation into SIGSEGV to the affected process is useful, because kern= el stacks can be also swapped out, and the kernel has no other way out except panicing. You complain about swap over file being enabled by default does not make se= nse either. The configuration requires explicit user involvement, and it is allowed by combination of the components that were designed to fit. The consequences of doing so is up to the user, we cannot and must not hold use= r' hands. Taking your line of reasoning, shall we disallow for installing the system on unreliable media like sdcard 'by default', because wearing makes = the system fail fast ? --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Thu Dec 28 13:09:05 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D3425E8EA42 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:09:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C1F8A79CD6 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:09:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBSD94fn047845 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:09:05 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:09:05 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: avg@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:09:05 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #15 from Andriy Gapon --- (In reply to Konstantin Belousov from comment #14) On the other hand, if the kernel knows that a vnode is used for swap and the kernel knows that the force reclaim of that vnode will lead to a panic, then why should the kernel allow that? I see several possibilities, but not sure if any of them makes sense from t= he FreeBSD architecture and design point of view. 1. When vgone-ing the swap vnode somehow perform an equivalent of swap off = on it. 2. Do not allow even the force unmount of a filesystem if there is a vnode = used for swap. 3. "Orphan" the swap vnode such that it is removed from its mount list, the name cache, etc, but it is still alive and is owned by the swap pager. I fe= el that this is impossible to do, however. Also, I am not sure about any "race", but it seems that during a shutdown we should first turn off all the file-backed swap and only then start unmounti= ng filesystems. From comment #0 it seems that we do not follow this order. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Thu Dec 28 13:23:34 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 030B7E998B2 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:23:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id E5AF67A78C for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:23:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBSDNX0l088274 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:23:33 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224532] Remove resident count from procfs map Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:23:33 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: commit-hook@freebsd.org X-Bugzilla-Status: In Progress X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 13:23:34 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224532 --- Comment #2 from commit-hook@freebsd.org --- A commit references this bug: Author: kib Date: Thu Dec 28 13:23:13 UTC 2017 New revision: 327286 URL: https://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/base/327286 Log: Reuse kern_proc_vmmap_resident() for procfs_map resident count. The existing algorithm in procfs_map() to calculate count of resident pages in an entry is too primitive, resulting in too long run time for large sparse mapping entries. Re-use the kern_proc_vmmap_resident() from kern_proc.c which only looks at the existing pages in the iterations. Also, this makes procfs to honor kern.proc_vmmap_skip_resident_count, if user does not need this information. I was one of them at one time, following http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/docs/html/ssd.html#_filesystems_and_trim material for SSDs that gave no hint of the issues involved. If the instructions had told me that I needed to enable the mode of use because of deadlock issues that do not happen with partition based swap spaces, I never would have tied it. I had swap space based deadlocks vastly faster than any sdcard wear out would have occurred: the configuration was simply unreliable over fairly short time frames. Also, the deadlocks are not examples of wear-and-tear. (You might want a better analogy for your point in that respect.) I view FreeBSD as designed to automatically avoid deadlocks for swapping only for partition-based swap spaces. Lesser points but more tied to this report: I was expecting that "shutdown -r now" might stop some processes before initiating the v-node removal, making such processes no longer sources of swap-in activity for later stages. (I was not thinking of any general fix to the deadlocking issues.) reboot, by contrast, I was expecting leaves more processes around that might try to swap-in in an untimely manor. I freely admit my expectations might be garbage-in/garbage-out. I was not expecting the sending of SIGSEGV or other signals to a process that is trying to swap-in after there is effectively nothing available to swap-in from. Does some involved kernel stack need to be in a swapped out state to have the problem that has been described? Or can it be a problem when no kernel stacks are swapped out? --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Thu Dec 28 16:01:28 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 93411EA65B4 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 16:01:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 8117F8097F for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 16:01:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBSG1SeJ057674 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 16:01:28 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224646] Attempts to load non-PAE modules into a PAE-kernel should be rejected Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 16:01:28 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: new X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 11.1-STABLE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: mi@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: bug_id short_desc product version rep_platform op_sys bug_status bug_severity priority component assigned_to reporter Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 16:01:28 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224646 Bug ID: 224646 Summary: Attempts to load non-PAE modules into a PAE-kernel should be rejected Product: Base System Version: 11.1-STABLE Hardware: Any OS: Any Status: New Severity: Affects Only Me Priority: --- Component: kern Assignee: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Reporter: mi@FreeBSD.org When a module is built outside of the normal "make kernel" process, it may = not have the PAE defined. Andrey, you do understand VFS, so I am quite frustrated. 1. If the vnode carriers some database, should kernel stop the database on = the basis that otherwise user data might be corrupted ? Should kernel print (Abort, Retry, Ignore ?) 2.If force unmount is not allowed because there is the swap on a file, would the next request be to add really-force option which causes unmount to proc= eed even in this case. 3. You agree on your own that io to reclaimed vnode is not possible. May b= e we should not reclaim such vnode, but then add VOP_RECLAIMFORREAL. It is very clear situation, system was directed to change its configuration= in a way which makes the continuation of the operations sometimes problematic, sometimes not. Why people consider it is reasonable to either deny the reconfiguration or to deny and have kernel to spit the whole man page on the console as the additional punishment, is beyond me. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Thu Dec 28 17:56:03 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id ADE4EEABB3E for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 17:56:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9B3FC63E85 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 17:56:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBSHu3KG047425 for ; Thu, 28 Dec 2017 17:56:03 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 17:56:03 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: markmi@dsl-only.net X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 28 Dec 2017 17:56:03 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #19 from Mark Millard --- (In reply to Konstantin Belousov from comment #18) It is probably not clear about my notes (other and shutdown -r now vs. reboot testing directly): My experience was deadlocks during normal operation when I used a swapfile, not during shutdown. The fix continues the division of the original number if the above case happens -- added the appropriate check to the for loop performing the division. This lowers the value shown, to make it fit into the buffer space provided (1.0M for 4+1 character buffer, as used by ls). Add test case for the reported bug and extend test program to support providing buffer length (ls -lh uses 5, tests hard-coded 4). Reboot takes more ricks of unclean behavior. It being more restricted makes sense. This really covers: NAME reboot, halt, fastboot, fasthalt - stopping and restarting the system as more risky by not cleanly terminating as much as the shutdown command variations do. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Fri Dec 29 22:58:45 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BC4F0EB4D9E for ; Fri, 29 Dec 2017 22:58:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id AA9187FC14 for ; Fri, 29 Dec 2017 22:58:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id vBTMwhow033058 for ; Fri, 29 Dec 2017 22:58:45 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 224479] kernel panic in reboot+swapoff sys call Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2017 22:58:44 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: patch X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: markmi@dsl-only.net X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Bug reports List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2017 22:58:45 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D224479 --- Comment #24 from Mark Millard --- (In reply to Andriy Gapon from comment #23) [Ignore if you care not for my history and opinion for swapfile usage vs. partition usage.] I will note that when I ran into the deadlock problems from using a swapfile instead of a partition, it was not obvious at the time that swapspace handling was involved at all: it was also first use of a platform as well. I was not lucky to have changed just one thing to know to revert it. For all I knew the type of platform might have been having problems in general. It was a pain to figure out that swapfile use was what I could avoid using in order to avoid the hangups that were happening. To me the discovery seemed to mean that FreeBSD violated a variation on the principle of least astonishment (but not tied to changes to historical behavior). (Having a partition with UFS and only one user-file, the swapfile, might avoid some of the issues. I had done this earlier [by an accidental choice] on powerpc64 and powerpc and had not seen any problems. This contributed to my not challenging the swapfile use earlier in trying to isolate contributions to the hangups: I did not then realize that I'd done something possibly special in that earlier use.) --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Fri Dec 29 23:40:38 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 419E3E809F0 for ; The reason why su(8) wouldn't work is because of /etc/pam.d/su which has an option group that has "group=3Dwheel" as an entry. I set it as "group=3D0" and now everything works as expected. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-bugs@freebsd.org Sat Dec 30 14:42:21 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-bugs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CE98DE88945 for ;
