I'm using a FreeBSD 11.0-R server as a SAN system (with a native iSCSI target). It has 12 disks attached via external enclosure and a Megaraid SAS 3003 mrsas(4) controller. Actually I'm using several FreeBSD in similar configurations as SAN systems, but this one is frequently unresponsive. This often looks like top/gstat/dmesg are locked on start and waiting for something, then, after several minutes, everything is back to normal. In the same time ls and zpool list are working fine, but zfs clone is not. In the dmesg I got tonns if messages like ctl_datamove: tag 0x1086bc on (16:34:0) aborted ctl_datamove: tag 0x1086a8 on (16:34:0) aborted ctl_datamove: tag 0x10ec50 on (7:34:0) aborted ctl_datamove: tag 0xf1cd6 on (13:34:0) aborted ctl_datamove: tag 0xfcc88 on (15:34:0) aborted ctl_datamove: tag 0xd3ed1 on (21:34:0) aborted ctl_datamove: tag 0x1056f8 on (1:34:0) aborted Not sure if they are related to the lock issue I'm having, so I thought I will just mention them. It seems like the system is starving on some resources, but I really have no idea about what could it be. When this lock is happening, a launched top stops to update it's output, so I don't know what is happening, I let the system run with default zfs settings, top show that the ARC has eaten out all of the memory. One more importang thing - just befor top stops refereshing the screen it shows that ARC has eaten all the memory, then, after lock is gone, top shows the server has 11G free memory back, so this happens in cycles and definitely has something to do with the amount of the wired memory. Should I tune the zfs subsystem in some way ? If yes - what exactly should I tune ? I'm also running this system with a CTL patch increasing the target limit to 1024, may be this is eating some additional kernel memory, don't know if this is the source of this locking issue. I'm running other systems with the same patch, but they are running smoothly. Thanks. Eugene. Reverting r438901 and r438058 locally is a suitable solution at the moment, but this is going to change soon I fear. The commits seem to be required to make ports pkg/poudriere compatible. -harry From owner-freebsd-stable@freebsd.org Mon May 22 19:24:22 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-stable@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 771BFD79FC8 for ; Mon, 22 May 2017 19:24:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from zbeeble@gmail.com) Received: from mail-wm0-x236.google.com (mail-wm0-x236.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:400c:c09::236]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 106951580 for ; Mon, 22 May 2017 19:24:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from zbeeble@gmail.com) Received: by mail-wm0-x236.google.com with SMTP id b84so4482593wmh.0 for ; Mon, 22 May 2017 12:24:21 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=ke94ttnNPoikZCL/R24eIwBs7tw+ZxjnHzRFAZOH09I=; b=f/klx6kPs8jACElRd2Sgyors7xVZrJzvgCVMuzYwWOiTzF2tEiTQGostYiZJVanUEE m6e+5Pm+dfXCTWYQJqNM1anySRaA6yDqh2nW2oboLPPZtcLVXC15jyZJgeBUv4uFU6Mw U85cQLJelZBaDK3CrBHYTbOgc54fR0af43Q74y09PCkiUGD3drZAq1XS4pcyga/eEZS8 Lw3df8ENDbVmYtV1uXiWI+ilCK2Zb+S9+Vry4UfZybytmtpvSqJAV1ZDQ60iATD7zbM7 GvHL6bY8Ffv4y0kqOw3bpJUXQSFBCcV3vC7BaGw86NAjrPH6J/KyqweRej+DYDfgud6h OQ6A== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=ke94ttnNPoikZCL/R24eIwBs7tw+ZxjnHzRFAZOH09I=; b=GpNnM98xk4j1L0Yk61KdSDdkV2OKgjFGlMa+uOCP2rsCQExYUiBz80oE7PoDXuGddM fFDUVODM/VMQm37mR2wlLaumayF2DeOJRiMVLLPG3DHwhFRjbsidA+Xa2qShl+TTK5ru k7+vdVk4q92PzI1eBVenz0XFpqQEdvZF2FqR6tuDPxO4PIZ7Kj6T576ne5LwfusPiPm/ heNuKkkkA24ZdJQU4Cop8dnNalk/oTcGKH1X5wLvsG61ExpDTaKlEGaBERTdlKPZ+LfS a5iqGx3zS1JBQce64E9DV7p26opLTeZuSjxW2VLmv9O5u3f8h0jXQurks05ajczqA73q WXVQ== X-Gm-Message-State: AODbwcD9ViNF3X0Ir8e8S4HHroEMFdUtXyn/dYwrLMJ9Gtw39Y0nt+ps jmHYyFkGhwlo0bKmWTpjBsfqzFNcTA== X-Received: by 10.80.173.72 with SMTP id z8mr19295233edc.111.1495481060325; Mon, 22 May 2017 12:24:20 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.80.186.24 with HTTP; Mon, 22 May 2017 12:24:19 -0700 (PDT) From: Zaphod Beeblebrox Date: Mon, 22 May 2017 15:24:19 -0400 Message-ID: Subject: No TCP-MD5 in 11.1-PRERELEASE. I compiled various svn revisions to confirm that r318347 caused the issue and r318346 is fine. With r318347 or later including the latest 11-STABLE, the system will only boot with one virtual CPU in XenServer. Any more cpus and it hangs. I also tried a 12 kernel from head this afternoon and I have the same hang. I had this issue on XenServer 7 (Xen 4.7) and XenServer 6.5 (Xen 4.4). I did most of my testing on 7. I also did much of my testing with a GENERIC kernel to try to rule out kernel configuration mistakes. When it hangs, the performance monitoring in Xen tells me at least one CPU is pegged. r318674 boots fine on physical hardware without Xen involved. Looking at r318347 which mentions EARLY_AP_STARTUP and later seeing r318763 which enables EARLY_AP_STARTUP in GENERIC, I tried adding it to my kernel but it turned the hang into a panic but with any number of CPUs: http://www.egr.msu.edu/~mcdouga9/pics/r318347-early-ap-startup-panic.png I think I verified that this happens with EARLY_AP_STARTUP before r318347 too so I'll assume it is a different problem. I may need to do some experimentation to figure out how to get the console to pass through hotkeys to drop into a kernel debugger. I could also try modifying the kernel config if I can make it print information about the hang. Is there anything else I can provide that might help? Would you prefer this be entered in a bugzilla report? Thanks. I have just tested latest HEAD (r318861) and stable/11 (r318854) and they both work fine on my environment (a VM with 4 vCPUs and 2GB of RAM on OSS Xen 4.9). I'm also adding Colin in case he has some input, he has been doing some tests on HEAD and AFAIK he hasn't seen any issues. > I compiled various svn revisions to confirm that r318347 caused the > issue and r318346 is fine. The panic looks easier to debug that the hang, so let's start by this one. Can you enable the serial console and kernel debug options in order to get a trace? With just this it's almost impossible to know what went wrong. If you still have that kernel around (and it's debug symbols), can you do: $ addr2line -e /usr/lib/debug/boot/kernel/kernel.debug 0xffffffff80793344 (The address is the instruction pointer on the crash image, I think I got it right) In order to compile a stable/11 kernel with full debugging support you will have to add: # For full debugger support use (turn off in stable branch): options BUF_TRACKING # Track buffer history options DDB # Support DDB. options FULL_BUF_TRACKING # Track more buffer history options GDB # Support remote GDB. options DEADLKRES # Enable the deadlock resolver options INVARIANTS # Enable calls of extra sanity checking options INVARIANT_SUPPORT # Extra sanity checks of internal structures, required by INVARIANTS options WITNESS # Enable checks to detect deadlocks and cycles options WITNESS_SKIPSPIN # Don't run witness on spinlocks for speed options MALLOC_DEBUG_MAXZONES=8 # Separate malloc(9) zones To your kernel config file. Just to be sure, this is an amd64 kernel right? Roger. That is version 2.2.11.1. ( The images supplied by Microsoft came with waagent isnatlled which was more recent tahn ports, so I never used the prt (the one time I tried it clashed and didnt work at all actually). ) -pete. Can't help regarding 11.1-RELEASE, but if you're looking for pt_netmap on stable/11, I perpared a private MFC: ftp://ftp.omnilan.de/pub/FreeBSD/OmniLAN/misc/MFC-netmap-to-11.1-prerelease.diff I hope I found all related commits, but I've done by hand; no idea if there's a way to let svn do the same job... List of repspected revisions: r306772, r307394-r307396, r307569, r307572, r307574, r307703, r307706, r307728, r308000, r308038, r309306, r310822, r311045, r311986, r313747, r314915. No guarantee that I missed something! No tests regarding pt_netmap done yet, I just wanted to have a better testing platfrom, since there are outstaning vale-related problems (in native stable/11 netmap version, as well as in updated version, but developers tend to work with latest code, so I thought it might be easier getting help with updated code base). -harry
