The auto-start feature for guests on host boot works great and overall management is simple for the team. A descendent of iohyve and has UEFI GOP support so works great for us with Windows guests. A fix in 11-stable (that I wish would be back ported by re@ as 11.1 is still too far away - see: vga=off in pci_fbuf.c) would make it more streamline for my OpenBSD guests to be managed by chyves without having to use the grub hack. Give it a go, it is well documented and probably work well for your problem. Cheers! On 4 March 2017 at 04:55, C. L. For some days it was OK, then another intrrupt load. Though at least it doesn't kill the box, as with eventtimer LAPIC and timecounter i8254 the machine is likely to die as in it does respond to ping, but not HTTP and SSH. Is RTC worth trying? Chris H is the first person to dump the EFI memory map to me: on the host t= here is a 1MB LoaderData memory range, which splits the big Conventional Memory range into a small one (15MB) and a big one: the small one is too small to = hold the staging area. Marcel did remind me of this: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D9686?id=3D25414#inline-56907 But unluckily I didn't realize the importance, since I didn't really have access to an EFI-boot physical FreeBSD host and FreeBSD VM running on Hyper= -V didn't expose the issue. I'll attach the screen shot of Chris's mem map FYI. And I'm going to make a patch shortly. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Mon Mar 6 02:55:41 2017 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A9339CF70FA for ; Mon, 6 Mar 2017 02:55:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 986981ADC for ; Mon, 6 Mar 2017 02:55:41 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from bugs.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id v262tadZ072091 for ; Mon, 6 Mar 2017 02:55:41 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: freebsd-virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 211746] [Hyper-V] UEFI VM can't boot from the iso installation disk Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2017 02:55:36 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: decui@microsoft.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: freebsd-virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: attachments.created Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.23 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." To fix this correctly & thoroughly, IMO we need a relocatable kernel, but that would require a lot of complicated long term work: https://reviews.freebsd.org/D9686?id=3D25414#inline-56969 For now, I suggest we should only apply the idea "reduce the size of the staging area if necessary" to VM running on Hyper-V, we should restore the old behavior on physical machines since that has been working for people for a long period of time, though it's potentially unsafe. I think in the loader we can use CPUID to tell if we're running on Hyper-V = or not.
