Is there something special about these cards that could keep FreeBSD from working with them? Do they need to be in Dell/HP systems or would they work in a vanilla machine? (I'm thinking of getting one for a vanilla machine but only if it works.) The 5719 and 5720 are the same except for 4 ports vs 2 ports, right? Question 2: The PR was opened in 2012, and is still open. Do FreeBSD and the 5719 play together yet? Is anyone working on it? Question 3: For those who do have it working, are there any problems? For example, the Realtek 8111 has pauses, which can cause lost data, even with TCP. See [1] And the AX88179 silently corrupts data, even with TCP. See [2] Question 4: > I thought you don't have any working network devices on your box so > I recommended to use USB based ethernet controller(i.e. axe(4)) to > get working network on the box. The axe(4) man page lists several chips. Do any of these actually work correctly with FreeBSD? I found that the AX88179 silently corrupts data unless the data rate is very slow. For details, see [2] Question 5: > Unfortunately I didn't get any answers/hints from Broadcom. Still nothing from Broadcom? They claim it works with FreeBSD, but they will not assist? Does FreeBSD have anyone who is good at diplomaticly rattling cages? This is one of reason why bge(4) suspend/resumes are not reliable on some server class systems. WOL support also requires complicated ASF/IPMI handshake so WOL support was not implemented at all. Blindly activating WOL on bge(4) controllers with ASF/IPMI systems may trigger more issues. > Question 2: > The PR was opened in 2012, and is still open. Do FreeBSD and the > 5719 play together yet? Last time I tried axge(4) it showed poor performance with lots of RX errors. Enabling flow control slightly mitigates it though. If you see corrupted data with axge(4), try disabling all checksum offloading features and test it again. If you still see the same data corruption without checksum offloading it surely indicates data handling issue of the driver. > Question 4: > > I thought you don't have any working network devices on your box so > > I recommended to use USB based ethernet controller(i.e. axe(4)) to > > get working network on the box. > > The axe(4) man page lists several chips. Broadcom used to support FreeBSD for a long time. They donated engineering samples for driver development and answered specific technical questions and submitted support code for new controllers before the controllers are available on market. > Does FreeBSD have anyone who is good at > diplomaticly rattling cages? > > [1] See the "Realtek re(4) driver" thread on hackers@ > [2] See "AX88179 USB-to-Ethernet is slow and silently corrupts data" > on hackers@, drivers@, usb@, net@ From owner-freebsd-drivers@freebsd.org Fri Apr 27 04:58:34 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-drivers@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A2D24FC08D1 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2018 04:58:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rowley.evan@gmail.com) Received: from mail-it0-x22d.google.com (mail-it0-x22d.google.com [IPv6:2607:f8b0:4001:c0b::22d]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "Google Internet Authority G2" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 0CAB06CCC5 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2018 04:58:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from rowley.evan@gmail.com) Received: by mail-it0-x22d.google.com with SMTP id p3-v6so475875itc.0 for ; Thu, 26 Apr 2018 21:58:34 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=AaZ6kARxnhBjrIOrRpA4cn679++t1gNo7hLu2wQ4lGQ=; b=JZgMr0Fl/1Y+9rVt4OyNjPjdp4/PUZjYhOhnQJxwch4xoKJ7aIqVoe6CMX03tiRa89 eZNjmu7xWdMSBHbiNzp+cAMKB6cAlo01VxuWM/andnQZy7LUASjJgBj5rk/2qrqQ/Azr 1ENS6kB7yYGZvHV2y7U9HfT2oqusILTzAtkxY5jMx9kASd77SGtdy7SU/oA4IRXQiBvb 0NerqVk97MyPkRguGGtM2pZKcfzKdOSBTYd4tDgwYJfm1HCWVHHv9wmjbIfBExnj10QO D5T6PDQ8HeTzsTmx8hd8IvCIVfVclDkBW0CYX6QcbXtnKPYBFjb3LuJhNDXw038eMLIl RSsQ== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=AaZ6kARxnhBjrIOrRpA4cn679++t1gNo7hLu2wQ4lGQ=; b=ghk2oGRYQZ1D1o5QsJywrjMloZ77izQ+6VnAah+3vxl9XomSXjshR9x/1EXGZWp5Yc UoG/ss4IQ3bDTvDiQxs68GhFhOVF6gYOGtktvfndjwvlDDWVhhaMaQh5eT7YQdXDT20h ALy6cd42uZ5AKYitnAHrwmM6jgd5nzqLAZwJMYneWKhxTZjP7hNFFnraL3F8vHUkpRoO 1pE3y5eVu/f1AyyAGU+hpvbRfDtsgp9Eq4veXO8OlWUkiNztPR8o0pNftcJTm20nttTS MV3kv+xieycacgU4i+JeYYejV2xpAhRsUPwUHvlIRSLh+2zTwsU9dRGx6wKdB3nghNE7 QpAQ== X-Gm-Message-State: ALQs6tARQ5TClRBG1K6g9oi7NXMF0XOAhuy1dSZsr5dpVd9txebxySCL 6kpEYvNOVaXrBGL3kTBP93kv72t0eyKtF5fICv5yvg== X-Google-Smtp-Source: AB8JxZq+MZPYB+b6/JSdXucv2xz1wSTu+uAx5zXrfoWoGidL6xeliAywOecUOC48P/Ee/oTf4/uxYZ2FkyCjgADEmNg= X-Received: by 2002:a24:fe46:: with SMTP id w67-v6mr521798ith.46.1524805113138; Thu, 26 Apr 2018 21:58:33 -0700 (PDT) MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Evan Rowley Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2018 04:58:22 +0000 Message-ID: Subject: Matching mps driver in 11.1-STABLE to LSI 2008 firmware To: freebsd-drivers@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.25 X-BeenThere: freebsd-drivers@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.25 Precedence: list List-Id: Writing device drivers for FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2018 04:58:34 -0000 Hello, 11.1-STABLE has many errors with my firmware v19 LSI 2008 IT-mode SAS HBA. No problems so far. The controllers actually work wonderfully. Has the driver changed in STABLE in any way? What is the problem you're having? I have a few R-series Dell servers of the 12th. They all come with onboard 5720. Ethernet works with bge(4), generic settings. Running 11.1-RELEASE on all those systems. "works" means here "they can run, sure", but long term stability is, from my experience, let's say, less than ideal. I've had one server losing network already twice within 3 months with polling, and another losing network once, for no apparent reason, no polling. Already replaced the first one with intel i350-t2. The other one is still running 5720, to be replaced with prolly i210. If you want to buy new, don't. Get Intel i350 or i210 instead. Been running i350-t2 on another system under constant high load, no problems for over a year now. -- PG From owner-freebsd-drivers@freebsd.org Fri Apr 27 21:47:21 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-drivers@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E995FFB2A03 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2018 21:47:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@disroot.org) Received: from knopi.disroot.org (knopi.disroot.org [178.21.23.139]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 864B185C21 for ; Fri, 27 Apr 2018 21:47:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from freebsd@disroot.org) Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by disroot.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 97AF02E0C8; Fri, 27 Apr 2018 23:47:18 +0200 (CEST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=disroot.org; s=mail; t=1524865638; bh=dq4LuTWVHKPfFA/0+B36DGR5djpHpeD6VP4BEZJhvPI=; h=Subject:To:References:From:Date:In-Reply-To; b=xUDz2CijpwGuB8w0hw1T1+wmFXoIm9suXbzZKYaDvAzZ9rYyxN8rslCKTBgatcFGL yV9cjgc9SSx/Y7qLqYYSXAXZazG+0qPf5ir8fMvgWA8vS+cfVx6+QP6O54rtixNbSl s6LdlSfkxaHQ65lW/8gQhMSlMlTMf53S5ArecFPlwVSEgFZHFKEvKo8GwvX5kikIT0 YQ7R6C3RvCNB7e/ym71Hbe4UgLp/hm+Z49BoUpbC69fVTlPxi+zzG0lHqk8dGUjpyr rUCS/xK5ilSaP+J91ysmEJNmC2VpKQmg8bv7TDevIQrhOs47BQhSxchHr/yciP2H2c Q9A4gdnNNw+Aw== X-Virus-Scanned: Debian amavisd-new at disroot.org Received: from knopi.disroot.org ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (mail01.disroot.lan [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id MlF9Z1M-hEBm; Fri, 27 Apr 2018 23:47:16 +0200 (CEST) Subject: Re: Matching mps driver in 11.1-STABLE to LSI 2008 firmware DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=disroot.org; s=mail; t=1524865636; bh=dq4LuTWVHKPfFA/0+B36DGR5djpHpeD6VP4BEZJhvPI=; h=Subject:To:References:From:Date:In-Reply-To; b=uRWzyLYGb3/5FXFsAUvZKOdPevP34MXjVE+Hl0WTd50DJ+lK3y611WxrHLIjx5oq7 sBL0cQPAAZqHzTGE2nTwHM/O1cDhwxv92w6BfZ/m5twV1HgL4blxUpRBq+o7bhkHt+ HMafwaKap4tRagBLoRLY8oMKeNuZHBePo9+Moom+7HPtKYVGSOsPpmM2L2sMcbCKLg VagspnwjsBkKAmDD9Dg8jbP8dm4ZyroqRhRbrrJX1qSb20UJB2zwtQSPwYTpz1H6b0 F5dWBMd+MWcYw0heeUFP/YbfF2RYSQHSfgNTWWmMeauBqRqIUFh+OsYujk1+RnMA0O xp0kA//ergSPg== To: rowley.evan@gmail.com, freebsd-drivers@freebsd.org References: <94579286-7fcc-86ff-41d3-ceb6508f9b11@disroot.org> From: "Peter G."
