[Note to FreeBSD SCSI maintainers: how about some leading '0x' or trailing 'h' for hex numbers ??] Translation: a disk is dying, probably associated with NAA 0x500304800021bf31. Is there any enclosure management? A device like /dev/ses* If so, try 'sg_ses /dev/ses' and look for that NAA (or a close number to it (within 3)). I'll assume you have an exact match. Then try 'sg_ses -A 0x500304800021bf31 --set=ident /dev/ses' That should cause a LED to flash on the disk carrier of the damaged disk. To stop it flashing substitute "clear" for "set" in the previous invocation. > I tried to find the place in the source which produce these lines but failed :( > > Hard reboot, including full power off, was tried, but did not help. > > Any hints to diagnose this further? > > Ah, and this is stable/10 from Nov 2017 > > > please keep me CC:d as I'm not subscribed to -scsi@ Good luck Doug Gilbert P.S. Merry from comment #13) Hi Ken, we found a regression caused by the patch: when we tested the patch with recent 12-CURRENT (July 11) in a *UP* FreeBSD Virtual Machine running = on Windows Server 2012 R2, the VM hangs after printing=20 Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/da0s1a [rw]... If I use a SMP VM (e.g. 2 CPUs or more), the issue will go away. If I use a UP VM, and insert a .iso file into the virtual DVD drive, the is= sue will go away as well. However, the same UP VM image can run fine on a Windows Server 2016 host wi= th 1 CPU, and no .iso file in the virtual DVD drive. So I can't say this patch has a bug. My gut feeling is that: maybe the patch somehow triggers a host issue, e.g. maybe the host's emulation of DVD drive returns some invalid value to the VM and the VM hangs? When the issue happe= ns, the VM's CPU utilization is 0%, so I'm sure the VM is not in a busy loop. Probably the VM is waiting for some condition? I'm attaching the good log (I insert a .iso file into the virtual DVD) and = the bad log (the virtual DVD is empty). I got the log with the same VM running = on Windows Server 2012 R2.=20 The good one is: ... cd0 at ata1 bus 0 scbus1 target 0 lun 0 cd0: Removable CD-ROM SPC-3 SCSI device cd0: 16.700MB/s transfers (WDMA2, ATAPI 12bytes, PIO 65534bytes) cd0: 669MB (342562 2048 byte sectors) ... Merry --- Ok, there is likely a bug in the patch, we'll just have to track it down. Here are a few things to try that may help get to the bottom of it. First, make sure you're running with WITNESS and INVARIANTS enabled, since those may catch locking or other issues that are causing problems. 1. In the situation that hangs (Windows Server 2012, UP, no ISO in the dri= ve), when the OS hangs, break into the debugger and run "ps" and "alltrace" and = send the output. You can break into the debugger normally by sending a "break", = but you can also configure ALT_BREAK_TO_DEBUGGER in the kernel config file. He= re is what sys/conf/NOTES says about triggering the debugger: # Solaris implements a new BREAK which is initiated by a character # sequence CR ~ ^b which is similar to a familiar pattern used on # Sun servers by the Remote Console. There are FreeBSD extensions: # CR ~ ^p requests force panic and CR ~ ^r requests a clean reboot. 2. Run the VM under Windows Server 2012 in SMP mode with no ISO in the dri= ve, run these commands and send the output: camcontrol cmd cd0 -v -c "1e 0 0 0 1 0" camcontrol readcap cd0 -v camcontrol cmd cd0 -v -t 60 -c "28 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0" -i 2048 - | hd The first is Prevent Media Removal, the second is Read Capacity, the third = is a standard 10 byte read of one sector only. My assumption is that there should be no difference in the behavior of the emulated CD device between SMP and UP mode, and we're just avoiding the pro= blem in SMP mode due to timing. I have tested in UP and SMP, and haven't seen this particular problem, but = it could be that the emulated CD driver on Windows Server 2012 is responding i= n a way I didn't expect or the timing is just right in UP mode to trigger the b= ug. Let me know what you figure out. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org Sat Jul 21 18:50:04 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-scsi@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id E386410290B3 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 76ACD737D6 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 35DFF10290B1; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:03 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: scsi@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2326A10290AD for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id B0330737D4 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id C4116141C9 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:01 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id w6LIo1sE074422 for ; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:01 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id w6LIo1VK074421 for scsi@FreeBSD.org; Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:01 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: scsi@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 219857] panic in scsi_cd code Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:01 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: decui@microsoft.com X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: ken@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-scsi@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.27 Precedence: list List-Id: SCSI subsystem List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:50:04 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D219857 --- Comment #19 from Dexuan Cui --- (In reply to Kenneth D.
