However it is there on ZFS. ZFS is superb - you have missed out if you haven't used it - but this is not the place for ZFS advocacy :-) A quick guide would be to simply attach a dr= ive and partition as you would for UFS, except using freebsd-zfs for the type of the main partition. Use /boot/gptzfsboot instead of /boot/gptboot in the bo= ot partition though. Then make a pool, and I usually create a separate filesys= tem for booting, like this: zpool create tank da2p2 zfs create tank/ROOT zfs create tank/ROOT/default Copy the existing system to it using cpdup: cpdup -v -i0 / /tank/ROOT/default Finally set that filesystem as the one to be posted on the pool: zpool set bootfs=3Dtank/ROOT/default And you are good to go... (typed from memory BTW! hopefully all correct...) Am just doing a rebuild with current to see if that has the same issue. Will build and boot on UFS first, then copy to a ZFS filesystem using the above method for testing. I'll let you know how it goes. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Sun Jul 15 19:16:30 2018 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 37E93104BDF4 for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AE88D9440A for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 6A1DD104BDE9; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:29 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: virtualization@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5760C104BDE8 for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D568E94407 for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 224768C7B for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id w6FJGSdn024273 for ; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:28 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id w6FJGS29024272 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:28 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 229167] [Hyper-V] [Jun 19, 2018] Recently FreeBSD VM panics during boot-up, especially with Mellanox VF configured Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2018 19:16:28 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: regression X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: pete@twisted.org.uk X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.27 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports." Even on UFS = on 11.2 I did find that when it booted sometimes the networking didn't work an= d I had to redeploy a couple of times to get it working. Maybe there is some dependency on the physical host somehow ? Then I res= ized both of them back to D4s_v3. The UFS machine now boots (which it didn't at = that size before) but the ZFS machine doesn't. So its looking like either a race condition (so the number of CPU's makes a difference) or some dependency on the underlying hardware (as the resize may move to a different host presumably?)
