Writing zeros is a big lose often (though if the lower-layers implement a special WRITE ZEROS command, there might be some cases where that's useful: we currently do not). I doubt BOTH are ever anything but extra work. I would argue, however, that we shou= ld think carefully here. The difference between DSM Deallocate and WRITE ZEROS= + Deallocate flag (for those nvme drives that support it) is very small (trim= med blocks can return a variety of things depending: 0, ff or last written data= )... --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Tue Jan 8 03:48:46 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 49568148DFF3 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:46 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D97716C7B5 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 9C4B2148DFF2; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:45 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: fs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8A9D0148DFF1 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 1F14B6C7B3 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:45 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 6E4D91DD80 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id x083miKL052895 for ; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:44 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x083miS5052894 for fs@FreeBSD.org; Tue, 8 Jan 2019 03:48:44 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: fs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 234705] zpool initialize does not BIO_DELETE Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2019 03:48:44 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: imp@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: fs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-fs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Filesystems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2019 03:48:46 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D234705 --- Comment #3 from Warner Losh --- (In reply to Warner Losh from comment #2) Which is a long way of saying BIO_DELETE is our deallocation abstraction, a= nd we should use it, but it is (in FreeBSD) non-deterministic. We don't have a= way to 'widen' the abstraction to one of the three possible values (0, f's or l= ast) today. If ZFS cares what the data is, it should write the data. Yes. This message appears whenever you launch an instance with a larger-than-default root disk; with UFS, the AMI promptly fixes the GPT and resizes the UFS filesystem. We can't avoid having the message (well, not without fiddling with the kernel bits to silence the warning) but we should fix the autoresizing to work with ZFS as well as UFS. > I was able to fix this with the following commands on firstboot: > # gpart recover ada0 > # gpart resize -i 2 ada0 > # zpool online -e zroot ada0p2 Can you look at /etc/rc.d/growfs (which currently only works for UFS, using the 'growfs' utility) and see if you can teach it to handle ZFS filesystems? Alternatively, maybe someone can teach growfs(8) to say "hey, this looks like a disk with ZFS... let's run 'zpool online -e' instead"? Either way, I don't think this is something I can fix for a FreeBSD 12.0 ZFS AMI, but if the growfs rc.d script can be made to do the right thing with ZFS then at least future releases will work. -- Colin Percival Security Officer Emeritus, FreeBSD | The power to serve Founder, Tarsnap | www.tarsnap.com | Online backups for the truly paranoid From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Wed Jan 9 16:00:27 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 0C757148489F for ; This will help us get input from the best experts at code review time. "Important" changes include: - adding (or removing!) a new user-visible feature, no matter how small (e.g. adding a new CLI flag) - changing the user-visible behavior of existing features (e.g. now X will automatically do Y for you) - changing the on-disk format (e.g. to improve performance) - changing the zfs send stream format As a rule of thumb, if you are changing a manpage (other than to clarify existing functionality), it's probably an "important" change. The notification will occur via email to the developer@open-zfs.org mailing list, so please join that list if you'd like to be informed about upcoming important changes to OpenZFS. If you have feedback on these changes, please let the author know within 7 days. This guideline applies to newly-proposed changes, not retroactively to open PR's. However, here are some examples of open PR's that would be classified as "important": https://github.com/openzfs/openzfs/pull/690 ("zfs allow" can take numeric id) https://github.com/openzfs/openzfs/pull/664 (new kstats) https://github.com/openzfs/openzfs/pull/668 (SIGINT/SIGKILL can cancel channel program) https://github.com/openzfs/openzfs/pull/649 (add new functions to channel programs) https://github.com/openzfs/openzfs/pull/638 ("zfs send" handles SIGINFO) https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/8238 (remove new subcommand) https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/8044 (new compression algorithm) https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/8255 (new property, subcommand) https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/pull/7958 (new on-disk format, send stream format, subcommand) --matt [1] https://docs.google.com/document/d/1w2jv2XVYFmBVvG1EGf-9A5HBVsjAYoLIFZAnWHhV-BM/edit From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Thu Jan 10 11:08:10 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id DA7941486993 for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2019 11:08:10 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from borjam@sarenet.es) Received: from cu01176b.smtpx.saremail.com (cu01176b.smtpx.saremail.com [195.16.151.151]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id CC6FD768D6 for ; Thu, 10 Jan 2019 11:08:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from borjam@sarenet.es) Received: from [172.16.8.5] (unknown [192.148.167.11]) by proxypop01.sare.net (Postfix) with ESMTPA id DCF059DDCF9; Thu, 10 Jan 2019 12:07:58 +0100 (CET) Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Mime-Version: 1.0 (Mac OS X Mail 12.2 \(3445.102.3\)) Subject: MY FAULT. waiting to service incoming RPCs (which are not getting dispatched). The situation immediately clears up when the quota on the dataset is raised sufficiently to permit the pending writes to complete. The theme being that serializing zvol.c by overloading the=20 spa_namespace_lock is specious at best. This time, deadlkres() panicked the system because we have zpool import thread holding the spa_namespace_lock while sleeping in g_access() waiting for (gp->flags & G_GEOM_IN_ACCESS) !=3D 0. Meanwhile, another g_access() thread set=20 gp->flags |=3D G_GEOM_IN_ACCESS and executed gp->access().=20 In this case gp->access is zvol_geom_access(). zvol_geom_access() executes zvol_close() where it tries to acquire the spa_namespace_lock - Deadlock. If you see Reallocated_Sector_ct >0 that's generally a si= gn a disk is dead. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Sat Jan 12 21:12:30 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8D447149F1D7 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (mailman.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::50:5]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 1278B704F3 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:30 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) id C77CD149F1D6; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:29 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: fs@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B52B1149F1D5 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4E226704F1 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:29 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2001:1900:2254:206a::16:76]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 8B6A01CE3F for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:28 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.118]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id x0CLCStp073813 for ; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:28 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id x0CLCSXh073804 for fs@FreeBSD.org; Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:28 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: fs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 234906] kernel panic: softdep_setup_inomapdep: dependency 0xfffff80107d15c00 for newinode already exists Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:28 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 12.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: johanvz816@giantfoo.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: fs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-fs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Filesystems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2019 21:12:30 -0000 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D234906 --- Comment #6 from johan van Zanten --- (In reply to Conrad Meyer from comment #3) > If you aren't using ZFS, the module should not load by default?
