When I tried to set the CPU frequency using powerd, it (and "sysctl dev.cpu.0.freq") reports that the frequency has been changed, yet a test using "openssl speed" shows similar performance between the two frequencies. Here's the result of running "openssl speed -evp chacha20" with "powerd -n maximum" (1416 MHz): type=09=0916 bytes=0964 bytes=09256 bytes=091024 bytes=098192 bytes=0916384= bytes chacha20=0940326.69k=0961947.78k=0970339.29k=0972921.32k=0973479.72k=097330= 7.48k And with "powerd -n minimum" (708 MHz): type=09=0916 bytes=0964 bytes=09256 bytes=091024 bytes=098192 bytes=0916384= bytes chacha20=0940314.57k=0962121.26k=0970303.44k=0972740.17k=0973468.76k=097352= 0.78k I expect that openssl would run slower when the CPU frequency is set to minimum, but that's not the case here. Is it a bug or did I use the wrong program to measure it? The system is a freshly-installed 12.0-RELEASE on the 1.4 GHz model. If I go to the port's directory and just do 'make install' it naturally comes up with the error - 'This package is for i386 only, you are running powerpc64'. Interestingly, this program and it's dependencies - OLVWM/Xview, etc - definitely are available for PowerPC 32 elsewhere, so I'm not sure about the 'i386' part of that message. I assume I could run a 32-bit powerpc binary because the 'choosing 32 or 64-bit powerpc' part of the wiki says so. Is there some way I could tell the ports system to build this for powerpc32 this one time? Or, failing that, grab a binary from elsewhere and install it with pkg_add or similar? I think I could find a NetBSD .tgz package for it, but would that work? Kevin. On a recent run, there were 54 of those. Look for a line in the port Makefile corresponding to the above error. It may be in a line such as ONLY_FOR_ARCHS or NOT_FOR_ARCHS. I can't say how to do it in the ports build environment, but you can do it manually. You could also create a 32-bit poudriere jail and build in there. - Justin From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Thu Oct 10 16:34:32 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 746FC1435D8 for ; Thu, 10 Oct 2019 16:34:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danfe@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [96.47.72.132]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "freefall.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 46pxWD2bFqz4Jpb; Thu, 10 Oct 2019 16:34:32 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danfe@freebsd.org) Received: by freefall.freebsd.org (Postfix, from userid 1033) id 508B112173; Thu, 10 Oct 2019 16:34:32 +0000 (UTC) Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2019 16:34:32 +0000 From: Alexey Dokuchaev To: Kevin Smallman Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: build 32-bit binary on powerpc64 Message-ID: <20191010163432.GB40333@FreeBSD.org> References: <20191010140937.GA89733@FreeBSD.org> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <20191010140937.GA89733@FreeBSD.org> User-Agent: Mutt/1.11.4 (2019-03-13) X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2019 16:34:32 -0000 On Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 02:09:37PM +0000, Alexey Dokuchaev wrote: > On Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 03:05:01PM +0100, Kevin Smallman wrote: > > There's one package I'd like to build in the ports tree that is 32-bit > > only, but I'm running the 64-bit version of FreeBSD powerpc on my old > > imac g5. I'm afair not: x11-toolkits/xview is indeed an ancient and no longer maintained software; e.g. it officially never supported 64-bit arches, per https://archive.physionet.org/physiotools/xview/: "There is no 64-bit version of XView, and it is unlikely that one will be produced. [...] Unfortunately, the changes that would be required to create a 64-bit version are very extensive, requiring an effort that would be similar to starting from scratch." I built it under 32-bit PowerPC, but any XView-based application crashes with a segfault for me, similar to amd64. Also, modern Xorg server is severely incompatible with XView (however, applications at least start running on i386). While theoretically it should be possible to unbreak it on ppc32, I'm not sure if that's the best investment of one's time. Perhaps you might consider something less old and working? :-) ./danfe From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Fri Oct 11 11:46:55 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A982A14A5B4 for ; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 11:46:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danfe@freebsd.org) Received: from freefall.freebsd.org (freefall.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:6074::16:84]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "freefall.freebsd.org", Issuer "Let's Encrypt Authority X3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 46qR4v42PPz4QX1; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 11:46:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from danfe@freebsd.org) Received: by freefall.freebsd.org (Postfix, from userid 1033) id 8322B1F5C1; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 11:46:55 +0000 (UTC) Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2019 11:46:55 +0000 From: Alexey Dokuchaev To: Kevin Smallman Cc: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Feedback for ports on 12.1 stable snapshot/ppc64 Message-ID: <20191011114655.GB32954@FreeBSD.org> References: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: User-Agent: Mutt/1.11.4 (2019-03-13) X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2019 11:46:55 -0000 On Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 06:06:49PM +0100, Kevin Smallman wrote: > Can I also report that I've successfully also built llvm-80 and the whole > of xorg? > I feel like my imac deserves a reward for this, it's been at it for days. Yes, it does deserve it. These old Macs are fine pieces of hardware, but some of their limitations (e.g. max amount of supported RAM) makes them harder to use with contemporary bloated software. FreeBSD/powerpc was relatively lucky for quite a while because it was using sane compiler (gcc-4.2). Unfortunately, I've heard it might get downgraded to clang in not so distant future. :-( ./danfe From owner-freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org Fri Oct 11 16:33:40 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-ppc@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 596921554B3 for ; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 16:33:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alfredo.junior@eldorado.org.br) Received: from smtp1.eldorado.org.br (smtp1.eldorado.org.br [200.148.226.10]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client CN "smtp1.eldorado.org.br", Issuer "smtp1.eldorado.org.br" (not verified)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 46qYRl0SLpz3K7T; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 16:33:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from alfredo.junior@eldorado.org.br) X-AuditID: ac10c815-b5bff7000000c9d5-a1-5da09efea598 Received: from serv030.corp.eldorado.org.br (Unknown_Domain [192.168.4.30]) (using TLS with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by smtp1.eldorado.org.br (ELDORADO_SMTP) with SMTP id B2.09.51669.EFE90AD5; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 12:25:50 -0300 (-03) Received: from serv030.corp.eldorado.org.br (192.168.4.30) by serv030.corp.eldorado.org.br (192.168.4.30) with Microsoft SMTP Server (TLS) id 15.0.1395.4; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 13:33:34 -0300 Received: from serv030.corp.eldorado.org.br ([fe80::493e:4247:53f3:53b7]) by serv030.corp.eldorado.org.br ([fe80::493e:4247:53f3:53b7%14]) with mapi id 15.00.1395.000; Fri, 11 Oct 2019 13:33:34 -0300 From: Alfredo Dal Ava Junior To: Alexey Dokuchaev , Kevin Smallman CC: "freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org" Subject: RE: Feedback for ports on 12.1 stable snapshot/ppc64 Thread-Topic: Feedback for ports on 12.1 stable snapshot/ppc64 Thread-Index: AQHVf56imwgiUL5FAkiQqWpXhVnEpadVhjaA///6tqA= Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2019 16:33:34 +0000 Message-ID: <41074306f77140a0972b4c00078678fd@serv030.corp.eldorado.org.br> References: <20191011114655.GB32954@FreeBSD.org> In-Reply-To: <20191011114655.GB32954@FreeBSD.org> Accept-Language: en-US, pt-BR Content-Language: en-US X-MS-Has-Attach: X-MS-TNEF-Correlator: x-ms-exchange-transport-fromentityheader: Hosted x-originating-ip: [10.10.86.150] Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable MIME-Version: 1.0 X-Brightmail-Tracker: H4sIAAAAAAAAA+NgFprFIsWRmVeSWpSXmKPExsVyYAWLnO6/eQtiDd58sLH4/ecbu8Xyn2vZ LO4u+cXiwOwx49N8Fo+ds+6yBzBFcdmkpOZklqUW6dslcGX8/TSbtWAda8X+T5dZGhiXs3Qx cnJICJhI/DvzhLWLkYtDSGAlk8SfOVfZIZx9jBILurazQDinGSVWzFrKBtLCJmArcfH9IjBb RCBQ4tOPJawgNrOAuUT3tXlgtjBQTcumtVA1dhIrf+xgh7CtJNZtvQG2mkVAVaLr5G+wOK+A t8SaNbPA4kIC5RIHds4FinNwcAoYSlxpBSthFJCVeHi6mRlilbjErSfzmSA+EJBYsuc8M4Qt KvHy8T9WCNtAYuvSfVBfKki8bpjLDtGrI7Fg9yc2CFtbYtnC18wQJwhKnJz5hGUCo/gsJCtm IWmZhaRlFpKWBYwsqxhFi3NLCgz1UnNS8osSU/L18ovS9ZKKNjECY2yNwAnRHYzPf3gdYhTg YFTi4b1QsyBWiDWxrLgy9xCjBAezkggvwwSgEG9KYmVValF+fFFpTmrxIUZpDhYlcV5HPvtY IYH0xJLU7NTUgtQimCwTB6dUA2PJu+dB6ofW3T7+NLb16rPOLEMru271yjcX9RsP6fudkl+7 pTNlStCyOuuLWzRsmUN+WUc1ln2ru890Je7mLrP9m6/WX74eIBF4wET3jL7igX0rIxxlb274 vywtRFNm+m+/enZrv9/6WeGi5vYqTafO/ggwmJpiWLjsT3tSxom4OsfrRlJy+UosxRmJhlrM RcWJAH2+7qitAgAA X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 46qYRl0SLpz3K7T X-Spamd-Bar: -- Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=none; dmarc=none; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of alfredo.junior@eldorado.org.br designates 200.148.226.10 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=alfredo.junior@eldorado.org.br X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-2.68 / 15.00]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; TO_DN_EQ_ADDR_SOME(0.00)[]; HAS_XOIP(0.00)[]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; RCPT_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip4:200.148.226.10]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000,0]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[eldorado.org.br]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000,0]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[4]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[10.226.148.200.list.dnswl.org : 127.0.10.0]; IP_SCORE(-0.38)[ip: (-3.26), ipnet: 200.148.128.0/17(-1.46), asn: 10429(2.74), country: BR(0.05)]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_NA(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; ASN(0.00)[asn:10429, ipnet:200.148.128.0/17, country:BR]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[] X-BeenThere: freebsd-ppc@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.29 Precedence: list List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to the PowerPC List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Fri, 11 Oct 2019 16:33:40 -0000 On powerpc 32 bit, try llvm90 or llvm-devel, as the support for this platfo= rm receive huge improvements recently. llvm80 support is basic and the link= er doesn't generate valid code for non-static binaries. There's a very active work[1] to move powerpc64 to llvm and to the ELF ABI = v2 at same time. The powerpc 32 bit is also being worked on, but I don't ha= ve any 32 bit hardware available to test.. If you would like to give a try, please let me know and I'll prepare an exp= erimental 32bit disc1.iso with llvm9 already included as base compiler. Wou= ld be nice to have more people involved. Thanks, Alfredo [1] https://wiki.freebsd.org/powerpc/llvm-elfv2
