I have a Ryzen 3 1200, and Fatal1ty X370 mini-ITX motherboard. I've been suffering USB problems (details here: https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-stable/2018-June/089155.html) for a long time, have tried a bunch of BIOS updates, including the latest for my motherboard. I've also gone through 3 versions of FreeBSD, and am now on 12/stable. In short, the only way I can have a stable USB system is by switching power off, then booting up from cold, and then not removing or inserting any USB devices. Kind of annoying. I'm pretty convinced this is not an OS issue (I had the same problem on NetBSD, and instability on Linux too, before I switched to FreeBSD). However, I have no idea how much of the USB hardware is implemented in the CPU, and how much in the motherboard. Can anyone help me with this question, or point me at diagnostic tools for figuring out where the problem is? I'd be *very* happy to solve this problem. Note that even before I get to the FreeBSD bootloader screen (so while the UEFI thing is initialising), there's a very significant (5-10s) delay on a warm boot, during which the keyboard caps lock light won't toggle; this doesn't happen on a cold boot. For this reason, I strongly suspect a hardware failure. My main question is really, how I figure out if it's the CPU or the motherboard at fault. I'd rather not change the wrong one, or unnecessarily change a working part. I notice the internet has quite a few stories of this motherboard having USB difficulties (allegedly due to build quality issues); that would be my main suspicion, although I managed to bend some of the CPU pins, and had to bend them back with a needle, so I can't rule that out either (note: I did get all the pins back straight, and none fell off, or gave a feeling of wobbliness or weakness). Thanks, Phil On Fri, 25 Jan 2019 at 11:22, Hans Petter Selasky wrote: > On 1/24/19 10:53 PM, Phil Norman wrote: > > I hadn't; thanks for that. > > > > It certainly spams a lot. Based on the trace you posted, I see that the AMD 300 Series USB 3.0 controller and AMD KERNCZ USB 3.0 controller are apparently failing. To the best of my knowledge, these controllers are integrated in the CPU itself. So, I'd guess that the bent CPU pins may well be the cause of your problems. My Ryzen 5 does not exhibit any of the problems which you're seeing. -- Gary Jennejohn From owner-freebsd-usb@freebsd.org Fri Jan 25 19:47:59 2019 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-usb@mailman.ysv.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.ysv.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id A2BDE14C03B4 for ; The quirk affects all of the devices in the Chipfancier SLC family, not just the one specific device for which the quirk was added. I replied to usb/234503 about this, but as this is already in head, I'd like someone to act on it and modify the quirk to cover all of the devices in the family before 12.0-R comes out (and hopefully MFC to stable before 11.3 comes out). As I wrote in the PR, I'm already running the patch in releng/11.2 in production. Will you make a patch for usb_quirk.c ? I can do up a patch, yes. The subject file thus far is scsi_da.c, not usb_quirk.c? I'm not sure how to make a quirk that is idProduct agnostic. Is there documentation on this, or can you point me an example of such an entry?
