--- Comment #21 from Vincenzo Maffione <vmaffione@FreeBSD.org> ---
Just to clarify the situation, on current HEAD if_vtnet + bhyve + jumbo-fra=
mes
works as expected, even withouth mergeable rx buffers support.
I did not test on stable/11, but if it is still true that this combination =
does
not work, then it follows that it must be an issue in the stable/11 if_vtnet
driver?

https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D243692

            Bug ID: 243692
Summary: file-backed VMs do not have LBA flag set in
                    virtio-block
           Product: Base System
           Version: 12.1-RELEASE
          Hardware: amd64
                OS: Any
            Status: New
          Severity: Affects Some People
          Priority: ---
         Component: bhyve
          Assignee: virtualization@FreeBSD.org
          Reporter: james.blachly@gmail.com

Summary:
Briefly, file-backed virtio-block devices in bhyve are exposed differently =
than
zvol backed VMs. This causes ZFS in illumos to segfault when a file-backed
virtio-block device is used.

In illumos, the only difference in the block devices, as far as I can tell,=
 is
that zvol-backed devices have the ":lba-access-ok" flag set.

Possible cause:
The virtio block driver has a set of flags that expose supposed capabilitie=
s:

https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd/blob/0f0a35a04846fc4f4bdb6caa2852336d7de=
9447d/usr.sbin/bhyve/pci_virtio_block.c#L70-L84

However, these differ between file-backed VMs and zvol-backed VMs, possibly
here:

https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd/blob/0f0a35a04846fc4f4bdb6caa2852336d7de=
9447d/usr.sbin/bhyve/pci_virtio_block.c#L366-L377

(if not specifically there, seems likely in that function, pci_vtblk_init)

This manifests in illumos as a segmentation fault when the command `zpool
create` is issued on a bhyve-exposed virtio block device that is backed by a
file.

I also filed an issue with illumos: https://www.illumos.org/issues/12237

Thanks in advance for help.

--- Comment #22 from Willem Jan Withagen <wjw@digiware.nl> ---
What did not work for me last time I tried is:

Have mtu 9000 on the physical interface, and add bridge to it.
The bridge will automagically get an MTU of 9000

Then try to add a plain TAP to it, you'll get "invallid argument".
Setting the tap MTU to 9000 fixes that problem.

I know this is not a typical bhyve problem, but will fail when using vmrun.=

--- Comment #1 from James Blachly <james.blachly@gmail.com> ---
On the illumos side, Hans Rosenfeld reports that the actual issue is that f=
or
file-backed virtio-block devices, bhyve reports the block size is equal to =
the
recordsize of the underlying ZFS system, i.e. 128k in my case. This is larg=
er
than ASHIFT_MAX thus pool creation fails.

The :lba-access-ok flag is then unrelated but still of note.

I believe that is good idea to have more than 31 chars for VM name.

I'm just curious, how did you decide what the new length should be?

Our colleagues from different department tries to request from server VM
instance through RPC service. They wants to have name of VM built from UUID
string.
I check that isn't impossible for creation and found that 32 bytes are crea=
ted
without problem.=20
I offer to them to remove dashes from UUID. Then they will have 32 chars na=
me.
Ok ... tools can handle it, but kernel cannot start it. Then I found that if
the name is 31 chars all is ok.
This is brake point which drive me to start chasing of this issue.

I found where are made checks for length of VM name and variable which cont=
ains
the name of VM.
Decision was based on several considerations
- I like all my variables to be rounded of machine word.
- We should not grow up to much, because I predict that many users already =
have
something like monitoring software which drawing something in tables.=20

This is something like explanation ... :)

--- Comment #3 from Mark Johnston <markj@FreeBSD.org> ---
I believe this has already been fixed:
https://svnweb.freebsd.org/changeset/base/349948

Note that the length on stable/12 is still quite small.

Hello,

Is there a reason why the resident memory used by a bhyve guest is quite di=
fferent when comparing ps/top & bhyvectl?
Does bhyvectl take in account something in kernel space that top/ps doesn't=
 see?

USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TT STAT STARTED TIME COMMAND
root 12670 0.1 1.4 2120984 951764 1 SC+ 22Jan20 157:29.22 bhyve: smtp-=

# bhyvectl --get-stats --vm=3Dsmtp-a | grep Res
Resident memory 1439875072

1.4G vs 925M

-----

Another thing I've just remembered, which is probably unrelated to the abov=
e but still concerning memory.
I have a guest with 2G memory allocated, and dmesg lists 2048MB real memory=
. The real & avail figures are also quite close which resembles the output =
I generally expect on real hardware.

Hypervisor: Origin =3D "bhyve bhyve "
real memory =3D 2147483648 (2048 MB)
avail memory =3D 2043318272 (1948 MB)

However, I have a guest with 5G allocated, and get the following in dmesg -

Hypervisor: Origin =3D "bhyve bhyve "
real memory =3D 6442450944 (6144 MB)
avail memory =3D 5141663744 (4903 MB)

bhyveload -m 5G ...
bhyve -c 2 -m 5G -AHP ...

I haven't tested where it seems to change. My only theory is that it could =
possibly be something to do with crossing the old 32bit limit?

Regards,
Matt Churchyard

They could both be wrong, but not by a huge amount :(

"top" shows the memory used by the bhyve process, which includes usage
by the hypervisor (which admittedly should be very small). However, the
guest usage is pages that have been faulted into the address space of
the bhyve process as a result of accesses by the hypervisor (e.g.
filling in network/disk buffers for i/o).

The bhyvectl stats are the pages that have been faulted into the EPT
paging structures as a result of guest access (code/data access). This
will generally be more than that reported by top, since the guest will
be getting execution faults that the bhyve process won't.

Over time they should slowly converge.

A fully accurate count would have to walk the bhyve/guest portion of
the address space and the EPT paging structures, to avoid
double-counting. There are probably better ways to do it: certainly an
interesting design topic.

bhyve inserts a 1G region just below 4G for 32-bit PCI address space.
The 'real memory' printed by FreeBSD is just the highest physical
address (5G guest total is 3G below 4G, plus 2G above, giving 6G as the
highest phys addr).

later,

Peter.
