FreeBSD doesn't promise KBI (not ABI) compatibili= ty between minor versions (e.g., 11.3-RELEASE-p1 and 11.3-RELEASE-p999 are compatible but 11.3 and 11.4 are not) but the binary packages are built for= the oldest supported release of a given branch (e.g., 11.3 until 2020-09-30 for /stable/11). As a result, I'm crossposting to both lists. Yesterday, after upgrading libX11 and x11-server, I could no longer run Emacs to an X display. It crashed quickly with a segmentation error in the pthread library. Oddly, I could run it to my local xserver from a remote system. Rolling back the x11 server did not help nor did rolling back libX11 or even both of them. I had to roll back libX11 first and build the server with the old libX11. Rebuilding emacs with the new ports made no difference. Since the old libX11 contains a very serious vulnerability, I really hate to leave it this way, but I also have a hard time getting anything done without emacs. Nothing other than emacs seems to have a problem with this. I had to roll back libX11 first and build the server > with the old libX11. Rebuilding emacs with the new ports made no difference. Which version of the server did you build? The patch to xorg-server is trivial, just switching out malloc for calloc have the memory 0 initialized. The patch to libX11 is rather more involved. It is possible that someone accidentally changed the ABI of libX11, I guess. What happens if you use the version with just the security fixes (the version I committed first, and that was merged to the Q3 branch.) > > Since the old libX11 contains a very serious vulnerability, I really hate > to leave it this way, but I also have a hard time getting anything done > without emacs. Nothing other than emacs seems to have a problem with this There is one commit after libX11 1.6.10, that takes care of a regression. Can you apply https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/lib/libx11/-/commit/93fce3f4e79cbc737d6468a4f68ba3de1b83953b on top of the libX11 1.6.10 update and see if that fixes anything? Niclas has not yet answered my two yes/no questions originally asked h= ere on 17 July 2020. However, since then I have answered the second one myself= by running portmaster graphics/drm-fbsd11.2-kmod and seeing that it rebuilt and reinstalled the same version of the port after an svn update /usr/ports. I= do not have the same answer for graphics/gpu-firmware-kmod because I neglected= to run it under script(1) in single-user mode. As of the time and date I installed the OS upgrade and reinstalled drm-fbsd11.2-kmod, there had been = no change to the latter since 28 April, which means that the drm bug hasn't be= en touched since then. If I can please get an answer to my question about cha= nges to gpu-firmware-kmod during that same time period, then we will know whether anything has been done there, too. On 21 July, another point was raised by Niclas, so I asked it here of Warner. To date, I have seen no answer to that question either. I do want= to know that answer because it might give me some idea how many more times I m= ight be told to update (again) to a "supported" revision or go away before I dec= ide that going away is the only remaining option to get to a system with usable graphics. I've been without usable graphics under FreeBSD off and on since= I started using FreeBSD 5.2.1 in 2005 with the "off" periods lasting from mon= ths to *years* at a time. This time has been going on for months already. If I had wanted a system for character terminal use only, I would gotten somethi= ng with an RS232 port and tracked down an old VT100 or the like. Lest Niclas still not understand, a) I do not like having my system cr= ash, leaving a mess to clean up manually and get everything restarted, b) there = is no reason to test again software that has not changed, so I won't do that, = and c) abandoning this discussion solves nothing, improves nothing, and frustra= tes immensely. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
