I used 2 disks for different setups: with one disk I created a pool under Linux called "linux", with one disk I created a pool under FreeBSD 13 BETA3 called "freebsd" (but disabled log_spacemap via "zpool create -o feature@log_spacemap=3Ddisabled -f freebsd gpt/hd003"). I then created a dataset linux/linux under Linux and linux/linuxenc as encrypted dataset under Linux. I did the same with freebsd but with the names freebsd and freebsdenc respectiveliy. I used "zfs create -o encryption=3Daes-128-gcm -o keyformat=3Dpassphrase ZPOOL/DATASET" to creat= e the encrypted dataset. I then did a zfs send|recv to those datasets. So the name of the zpool/dataset informs about the system where it was create= d. After that, I swapped the disks and created more datasets, so on Linux I created the dataset "freebsd/linux"=C2=A0 and the encrypted dataset "/freebsd/linuxenc", furthermore, I did a zfs send|recv to "freebsd/freebsd/linux" and "freebsd/freebsdenc/linux". Equivalent datasets and zfs send|recv were done under the BETA3 system. Summary: under Linux, everything seems to work fine. Under FreeBSD there are are the following issues: zfs load-key does work with all encrypted datasets, but datasets beneath encrypted datasets (it did not matter whether the encrypted dataset was created under BETA3 or Linux) that were written using the Linux system could not be mounted: [root@blackbox ~]# zfs mount -a cannot mount 'linux/linuxenc/linux': Input/output error cannot mount 'linux/freebsdenc/linux': Input/output error [root@blackbox ~]# zfs mount -a cannot mount 'freebsd/freebsdenc/linux': Input/output error cannot mount 'freebsd/linuxenc/linux': Input/output error Should I file a bug? or post this to the openzfs ML? While preparing to install the mentioned patch, I reached a status where: _ issuing mksnap_ffs always locks the machine; _ unmounting the filessytem (the one I would run mksnap_ffs on) also causes= a deadlock (I guess it's the same deadlock, but I didn't analyze it); _ shutting down, the machine cannot write all buffers and after reboot all = the filesystem will require fsck; _ the fsck on said filesystem will be problematic (hangs or panics). So it seems that, after a lot of snapshots creation/deletion, the situation= is already compromised *before* I try and take the snapshot that hangs. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Sun Feb 28 21:00:17 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 2C6D354A5B8 for ; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (unknown [127.0.1.3]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4DpbPs0PPSz4vDp for ; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 0950054A47D; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:17 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: fs@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 091DE54A4D7 for ; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4DpbPr6lcSz4tvJ for ; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id D7E2E1735E for ; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:16 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 11SL0GRA020500 for ; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:16 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from bugzilla@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 11SL0GN7020499 for fs@FreeBSD.org; Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:16 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Message-Id: <202102282100.11SL0GN7020499@kenobi.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: bugzilla set sender to bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org To: fs@FreeBSD.org Subject: Problem reports for fs@FreeBSD.org that need special attention Date: Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:16 +0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.34 X-BeenThere: freebsd-fs@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: Filesystems List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Sun, 28 Feb 2021 21:00:17 -0000 To view an individual PR, use: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=(Bug Id). If it is fsck that is failing, w= hat are the flags that you are using and how does it fail? Thank you for the comprehensive testing. I think it's best to file a bug. Maybe even both an openzfs (zol) github issue and a freebsd bug. Looks like there is some problem with freebsd crypto. P.S. This is believed to be correct behaviour at this time (it may change for some NFS mounts in the future), but is inconsistent with what the getdirentries(2) man page says. This patch fixes the man page. This is a content change. The problem is not deterministic: behaviour changes slightly from machine to machine and even subsequent runs starting from the same VM snapshot can dif= fer. In comment 12 I was talking about the last situation I was able to achieve = that I think is interesting. VirtualBox VM with two disk: _ ada0 is the "system" disk (UFS SU+J); _ ada1 is the "data" disk, i.e. the one I'm trying snapshots on (GELI+UFS S= U, no journal as it would prevent snapshotting). The filesystem is clean: fsck finds no errors and everything works normally. There are already 12 snapshots. I can take one or two further snapshots (probably more, I didn't try): still everything is fine. However, if I *delete* an existing snapshot, trouble starts: _ subsequent mksnap_ffs produces the deadlock I described; _ trying to unmount the filesystem also hangs (but won't hang the whole machine): ctrl-t may say it's in "secwr", like the above or in "bo_wwait" o= r in "wdrain"; a LOR (ufs@vfs_mount.c:1349/devfs@ffs_vfsops.c:1610) may appear or not; _ even shutdown doesn't work properly: vnodes remaining count seems to rise= and decrease at the same time; it may reach 0, but will grow again. What happens after an hard reset can vary: fsck -p in single user mode seem= s to work and recover the situation; a background fsck is usually asking for troubles, often resulting in a panic (dropping into DDB). In the end I was perhaps looking at the wrong side of things: it might not = be mksnap_ffs that hangs the machine, but *deleting* a snapshot. I'm not sure, though: I think in the past I've seen situations where it han= ged even without deleting, but I cannot reconstruct now. Or put another way, do these problems only show up when you try to run on stable/12? It would be helpful to find out if the problem is fixed when running on stable/13 as that would let us review changes made in the development of stable/13 to find the likely culprit. If is not fixed in stable/13 but it w= orks in stable/11, then we will know that the breakage happened during the development of stable/12. To be reliably able to track down the problem, we need a disk image of the filesystem that experiences the problem (i.e. the UFS+SU filesystem on which you are having the problem) along with a set of commands that when run on t= hat image cause the problem to happen. I realise that you do not know exactly what the parameters are for triggeri= ng the problem. I would suggest saving an image and then use script(1) to reco= rd the set of commands that you run trying to cause the hang. When you eventua= lly get a hang you will presumably know how to reliably recreate it. Hopefully = you can narrow it down to something where you do not need to run too many comma= nds to trigger the problem. You can then gzip(1) the disk image and let us know where we can pick it up along with the set of cammands that cause the hang. We can then verify that= we can reproduce the hang and if so finding a fix can proceed. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Tue Mar 2 19:12:38 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4AAF254D2E3 for ; Tue, 2 Mar 2021 19:12:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from karl@denninger.net) Received: from colo1.denninger.net (colo1.denninger.net [104.236.120.189]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4Dqmwj4FWmz3Dbm for ; Tue, 2 Mar 2021 19:12:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from karl@denninger.net) Received: from denninger.net (096-033-205-208.res.spectrum.com [96.33.205.208]) by colo1.denninger.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 729702110B2 for ; Tue, 2 Mar 2021 14:12:30 -0500 (EST) Received: from [192.168.10.25] (D15.Denninger.Net [192.168.10.25]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) server-digest SHA256) (No client certificate requested) by denninger.net (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id B00602BDC1D for ; Tue, 2 Mar 2021 14:12:30 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: digital ocean droplet, FreeBSD update from 11.2 to 12.2p4, zpool upgrade and boot sector ? As always, be careful. For my droplet, my disk looks like this: # gpart show => 40 104857520 vtbd0 GPT (50G) --> 40 512 1 freebsd-boot (256K) 552 4194304 2 freebsd-swap (2.0G) 4194856 100662704 3 freebsd-zfs (48G) So, BIOS (gpart bootcode Ok, vs UEFI) on partition 1. The problem started when either I built a new machine with 12.1 or upgraded= a 11.3 to 12.1. 12.2 also shows the problem. I never tried 12.0 or 12-STABLE. As I said, I was going to try 13.0 (should almost be the same as 13-STABLE = now, shouldn't it?) If you'd like me to also try 12-STABLE, I will. Does 11-STABLE differ that much from 11.4 (given 11.4 should be the last release on this branch)? I ask because it will be harder for me to try this. In fact I know how to trigger the problem exactly: I have a VM I can boot a= nd just issue "rm /mnt/.snap/1". Unfortunately, this disk image, besides being quite large, holds data that belongs to a customer of mine, so I cannot share it. I will try to build a new one with different data, but previously I wasn't = able to trigger the problem until I "rsync"ed from there, so it will take some t= ime and some luck. I don't know what is going on there, and I'm on 13 or 14 everywhere now so I can't sanity check. My general process is the normal kernel+world upgrade-from-source process (not necessarily what you're doing) and when that is all working, look at zpool status and see if something new can be enabled. If so, extra backups (offline snapshot), upgrade bootcode, upgrade pool, reboot, profit! If your gpart program is broken (mine runs fine even as a regular user), that is probably unrelated but don't upgrade your pool without upgrading your bootcode because you can get in trouble, particularly with the OpenZFS transition that I think you'd hit. This is believed to be correct behaviour at this time (it may change for some NFS mounts in the future), but is inconsistent with what the getdirentries(2) man page says. This patch fixes the man page. This is a content change. Another alternative, if your NFS server supports it, is switching to NFSv4. Maybe a little more bothersome to configure, but does support file locking pretty well. If the folks in each building will only edit their own datasets, then you can send/recv one dataset from Bldg 1 -> Bldg2, and the other dataset from Bldg2 -> Bldg1. But if they're going to be working on the same datasets at the same time, then you need to use a different tool. -Alan On Thu, Mar 4, 2021 at 2:44 PM joe mcguckin wrote: > I have two system running ZFS. I think that you need something rsync-ish, unison-ish, etc. In the past I worked with a proprietary solution that leveraged zfs diff's "backend" to do rsync-like incremental updates. Not sure if any open-source / free solution like that exists. -- Andriy Gapon From owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org Fri Mar 5 04:11:29 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-fs@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 38AB5564FF2 for ;
