In any case, your problem is that ada2s4 thinks that it is already a member= of the t1 pool. That can happen for example like this: 1) You create a pool that includes ada2s4 2) You physically remove ada2 3) You "zpool replace" the missing ada2s4 with a different disk 4) You reinstall ada2. The solution is to wipe the zpool label on that disk. You can use "zpool labelclear ada2s4", "zpool create dummy ada2s4 && zpool destroy dummy", or simply use dd. Then ZFS will let you add it to t1 again. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Mon Jun 14 21:21:05 2021 X-Original-To: fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id C769A11D0B31 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2021 21:21:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4G3krx5Fdnz3Dg3 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2021 21:21:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 9D4991C018 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2021 21:21:05 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 15ELL5Vf050592 for ; Mon, 14 Jun 2021 21:21:05 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 15ELL5hv050591 for fs@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 14 Jun 2021 21:21:05 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: fs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 256582] ZFS unable to attach/replace disk to the mirror/raidz Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2021 21:21:05 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 13.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: serzh@expir.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: fs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Filesystems List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-fs List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 X-ThisMailContainsUnwantedMimeParts: N https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D256582 --- Comment #9 from Sergei Masharov --- by "only replace is possible" I have meant that detach function is not available on zraid. The second is that the soft dependency code doesn't properly clean up after a namei lookup failure. At the mountroot prompt, devfs is mounted on the root so the namei lookup= =20=20=20=20=20=20 for 'gpt/rootfs' works. devfs is then remounted to /dev and the init process begins.=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20 =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20 Then comes time to mount 'gpt/rootfs', but devfs is no longer at the root, so the namei lookup fails. The system then drops into single-user mode with a readonly filesystem.=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20 The panic is caused because the soft dependency code gets set up (via softdep_mount()), but doesn't clean up after itself following the namei loo= kup failure (in ffs_mount()). The lookup failure causes the filesystem to not g= et mounted 'rw' (i.e., without soft updates). On shutdown, the system doesn't recognize that the filesystem is mounted with soft updates (because it isn'= t), and skips the clean up code (being softdep_unmount()). By skipping the clea= n-up clode, ump->um_softdep doesn't get set to NULL and fails on `MPASS()`.=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20 /dev/gpt/rootfs works at the mountprompt because when devfs is mounted on t= he root, a symlink is also created for '/dev' that points to '/'.=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20 I've attached a patched that fixes the panic - on its own, it doesn't addre= ss the real problem.=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20= =20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20=20 I think the real problem is that if the namei lookup succeeds at the mountprompt, then namei should also succeed when it tries to mount the root filesystem 'rw'. Imagine that we have rw= /SU mounted volume, which is updated. Then, if namei fails, you would remove SU structures from the ufsmount without a reason. IMO the cleaning of the um_softdep should only occur if we set it up in the previous MNT_UPDATE {} block. The problem with the inconsistent names for devfs before/after move of dev= fs to /dev is inherent. You might add something special-cased for e.g. updating UFS-type volume mounted on /, where "from" mount option does not start with '/'. Anything more generic would probably break some cases. Please put patch into the phabricator instead of attaching it to the bug report. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Wed Jun 16 05:33:43 2021 X-Original-To: fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9C00611D789E for ; With RAID5, each set of data+parity chunks is distributed over all of the disks. For example, an 8+1 array is composed of identical rows that each have 8 data chunks and 1 parity chunk of perhaps a few dozen KB per chunk. But with RAIDZ, each set of data+parity chunks is distributed over as many disks as are needed for _a_single_record_. For example, in that same 8+1 array, a 32KB record would be divided into 8 data chunks and 1 parity chunk of 4KB apiece. But assuming ashift=9, a 16 KB record would be divided into _4_ data chunks and 1 parity chunk of 4KB apiece. So small records are less space efficient to store on RAIDZ, and the problem gets worse the larger the RAIDZ vdev. In fact, the problem is a little bit worse than this example shows, due to padding blocks. I won't go into those right now. But it's not just space efficiency, it's IOPs too. In our 8+1 RAID5 array, if the chunksize is 64KB or larger, then randomly reading a 64KB record requires just a single operation from a single disk. But reading a 64KB record from a 8+1 RAIDZ array requires a single operation from _8_ disks. So RAIDZ has worse IOPs than RAID5. Basically, if a single disk has X read IOPs, then n+m RAID5 provids n * X read IOPs, but n + m RAIDZ only provides X. But it's not just space efficiency and IOPs, it's rebuild time, too. When rebuilding a failed disk, whether it's RAID5 or RAIDZ, you basically have to read the full contents of every other disk in the RAID group (slightly less for RAIDZ, for the reasons discussed in paragraph 2). For large RAID arrays, this can take a lot of IOPs and CPU cycles away from servicing user-facing requests. ZFS's DRAID is a partial improvement, but only a partial one. The best size of RAIDZ for you depends on the typical record size you're going to have, your random read IOPs requirement, the ashift of your drives, and how much performance hit you're willing to accept during rebuild. But 60 is way too many. -Alan On Fri, Jun 18, 2021 at 5:21 PM joe mcguckin wrote: > If I have a box with 60 SAS drives - Why not hake it one big RAID volume? > > Is there a benefit to a filesystem composed of multiple, smaller VDEVS vs > one giant 40-50 drive zpool? > > Are there guidelines or rules-of-thumb for sizing vdevs and zpools? > > Thanks, > > Joe > > Joe McGuckin > ViaNet Communications > > joe@via.net > 650-207-0372 cell > 650-213-1302 office > 650-969-2124 fax > > > > --000000000000e6aa2d05c512d718-- From nobody Sat Jun 19 11:54:38 2021 X-Original-To: fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D7F0111D84E8 for ; Sat, 19 Jun 2021 11:54:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4G6Z325jYfz3LY5 for ; Sat, 19 Jun 2021 11:54:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id A98B2157DA for ; Sat, 19 Jun 2021 11:54:38 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 15JBsctG021375 for ; Sat, 19 Jun 2021 11:54:38 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 15JBscLM021374 for fs@FreeBSD.org; Sat, 19 Jun 2021 11:54:38 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: fs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 244384] UFS fuzz metabug Date: Sat, 19 Jun 2021 11:54:38 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: grahamperrin@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: fs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Filesystems List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-fs List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-fs@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 X-ThisMailContainsUnwantedMimeParts: N https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D244384 --- Comment #1 from Graham Perrin --- >From (2021-03-27):=20 Panic String: ufs_dirbad: /media/da1p1: bad dir ino 2 at offset 0: mangled entry Unlike the mangling in bug 244352 (proof of concept involving a malicious U= FS filesystem image), my case involved no malice.=20 If you'd like proper background =E2=80=93 something more eloquent than what= I threw in the bin =E2=80=93 I can spin it into a new linked bug report although hones= tly, I never thought to treat it as a bug. RUN fsck MANUALLY. I've managed to reproduce this one fairly reliably (3 times out of 4 tries)= and I have a copy of a filesystem image taken before the fsck. The steps I used= to reproduce were (this is in a 13-stable install in a bhyve vm, where vtbd0 is the system image and vtbd1 is a 256MB md device on the host): newfs -O2 -U -j /dev/vtbd1 mount /dev/vtbd1 /mnt tar -xf python38-3.8.10.tgz -C /mnt find /mnt/usr -type f -print0 | xargs -0 rm tar -xf python38-3.8.10.tgz -C /mnt (when the prompt returns at this point, immediately destroy the vm) On booting the vm again and then doing fsck -p /dev/vtbd1, the above error appears. (vtbd1 is not mentioned in fstab) Should I split this off into a separate bug?
