And we do try to u= se all the new options and mechanisms available to us. But there is no mechanism that would prevent a network file system that uses cache from overwriting some data if two processes on two machines write to = the same cached block at the same time. I mean, once both kernels have modified= the same frame of cache and want to push the dirty frame to the filesystem, the= re is no way to automagically update/correct one of them. The only solution is= to not use cache at all (BTW, MooseFS client mounted with -o mfscachemode=3DDI= RECT, which translates to each open always setting direct_io to 1 and keep_cache = to 0, still triggers the "buggy" message). But not using cache at all is not a solution, because of performance. The commit you mentioned invalidates all cache, even the dirty frames. IMHO dirty frames should never be invalidated= . It should be left to the users/programmers to make sure they don't modify the = same area of the file (use locks etc.) Or we can say goodbye to any caching... The script I posted as an example is not "correct", in that it doesn't use locks, but it's my (programmer's) "fault" that data gets written to a file without control, not the _network_ filesystem's. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Tue Jul 6 07:24:34 2021 X-Original-To: fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id D0D348D6D72 for ; I have two machines, connected via a 40gbps direct attached link, with static IPs. They are leveraging jumbo frames (9000 byte MTU). The storage is backed by a healthy zpool. I can reliably reproduce this issue, but it takes a long amount of time (it was 40GB worth of packet capture before I gave up and then the issue finally reappeared). It seems that after a long enough time frame over an NFSv3 export, virtualbox hangs my VM that has disks backed over that share. The rsize and wsize are 128k to match the maximum stripe size of the pool, and I'm just using plain old sec=sys, no kerberos involved. The error I get from rpcdebug on the Linux client looks as follows: https://pastebin.com/rCv2ZTri Error 110 I looked up is a generic timeout. During this time, when the server seems to be going deaf to these xids, I can ping the server over the interface the connection is over. Traffic flows fine, the NICs are basically unutilized. There are no visible errors on any of the interfaces. The NICs are ConnectX-3's, running in en mode (ethernet). I tried switching to NFSv4, and eventually had the same problem, but with the added bonus that it never seems to successfully retransmit and hangs in perpetuity (NFSv3 eventually recovers, after the likely 600 second timeout). These seem to be fairly reliable NICs, and I don't see anything on the server or client to indicate that it's a network hardware issue. Is there anything I can do to diagnose this on the FreeBSD server end? It seems that the Linux kernel's rpcdebug facilities seem to mostly just give a bunch of noise. I did manage to run wireshark on the client during this stall period, and I had noticed some TCP packets that were classified as duplicate ACKs when the NFS traffic finally turned over again. --0000000000007c078905c674adb6-- From nobody Tue Jul 6 14:41:32 2021 X-Original-To: freebsd-fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id AAF3911DC58F for ; I can reliably reproduce this issue, but it takes a long amount of time (it was 40GB worth of packet capture before I gave up and then the issue finally reappeared). It seems that after a long enough time frame over an NFSv3 export, virtualbox hangs my VM that has disks backed over that share. The rsize and wsize are 128k to match the maximum stripe size of the pool, and I'm just using plain old sec=3Dsys, no kerberos involved. The error I get from rpcdebug on the Linux client looks as follows: https://pastebin.com/rCv2ZTri Error 110 I looked up is a generic timeout. During this time, when the server seems to be going deaf to these xids, I can ping the server over the interface the connection is over. Traffic flows fine, the NICs are basically unutilized. There are no visible errors on any of the interfaces. The NICs are ConnectX-3's, running in en mode (ethernet). I tried switching to NFSv4, and eventually had the same problem, but with the added bonus that it never seems to successfully retransmit and hangs in perpetuity (NFSv3 eventually recovers, after the likely 600 second timeout)= . These seem to be fairly reliable NICs, and I don't see anything on the server or client to indicate that it's a network hardware issue. Is there anything I can do to diagnose this on the FreeBSD server end? It seems that the Linux kernel's rpcdebug facilities seem to mostly just give a bunch of noise. I did manage to run wireshark on the client during this stall period, and I had noticed some TCP packets that were classified as duplicate ACKs when the NFS traffic finally turned over again. It looks like it calls some helper functions but from what I can tell they are fully present in the 13.0 releng branch (CC'ing the list and rscheff on this as well). I used gmail for all of this correspondence so hopefully the mutt or other mail users don't lose their mind with all the top posting. Sorry in advance for the poor ML etiquette. The patch seems to remove some manual OR'ing of flags in place of some helper functions that presumably do the same thing. I figured rather than reverting a performance improvement I'd apply the fix to make it work :). In general, the NFS client cannot know that a directory has been modified locally on the server (or by another NFS client) such that the same file name now refers to a different file. (NFS does not have a cache coherency protocol.) For NFS, what needs to happen for this case is that the new entry needs to replace the old (now bogus/stale) entry. I will look to see if a change in directory attributes can be used to invalidate all entries in the cache for that directory for the case of re-reading the directory, but this will, at best, reduce the likelyhood of having a new file for the same name and not stop it from happening. Not using the "rdirplus" mount option should avoid the problem in the meantime. mjg@, can you change cache_enter_time() so that it replaces the entry instead of panics? I reproduced this by doing the following: - NFS mount and "ll". - go to server and do two "mv"s, where nfs_clstate.c and xxx.c were files in the directory # mv nfs_clstate.c xxxx # mv xxx.c nfs_clstate.c - then "ll" again on the NFS client --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Thu Jul 8 00:11:46 2021 X-Original-To: freebsd-fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id BA2458D3C77 for ;
