Hi, recently we faced with somehow similar problem, but with BGP and BFD packets. In our case BFD packets from neighbor do not reach bird daemon in expected time window, and this leads to BFD failure. We did some research and found, that BFD packets were received by the adapter, but then they seems stalled in the adapter queues for at least 2-3 seconds, then all packets passed to the bird daemon in several microseconds, but failure has already happened. First of we configured port mirroring on the switch to capture all packets on the another host. In the mirrored traffic we can see that all packets were send and received in correct time windows. We use Mellanox network adapters, they have ability to attach hardware timestamps to mbufs, so we can know the time when packets were received. I made the patch to libpcap and bpf(4) to be able use these timestamps in tcpdump. https://people.freebsd.org/~ae/bpf_adapter.diff Then we have started two instances of tcpdump, one with host's timestamps (-j host), second with adapter's timestamps (-j adapter). When BFD failure happened, we saw equal ordering in both packet captures. But timestamps are different - packets that were arrived too late have correct receiving timestamp, so if they would not stalled in the queues, then BFD failer would not happened. Doesn't see= m to be in release notes. I believe this issue is not an issue with the FreeBSD guest but more likely an issue with the MacOS/Darwin poll() returning POLLP= RI events to Qemu's userland TCP stack, Slirp. When Slirp sees POLLPRI on a TCP stream it assumes (not unreasonably) that the incoming data has some urgent data in it. It makes some effort to craft a TCP segment=20 for the guest with URG flag and pointer set to a best guess. Unfortunately the guest VM's read() won't return urgent/OOB data in normal operation. As a result, data is omitted. >From my tests it seems very prevalent that MacOS poll() returns POLLPRI on = the last segment (perhaps it's signalling POLLPRI to tell the reader that the stream has finished?), which does explain why we lose the last byte or so. Lopping out the (revents & SLIRP_POLL_PRI) clause in slirp.c:slirp_pollfds_poll() in favour of the subsequent else-if makes things work, at the cost of NOPing out Slirp's likely hapless attempt= s to do URG reconstruction. RFC6093 seems to push us away from ever using TCP urgent in new apps, so ma= ybe that's not as bad as it seems. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org Thu Feb 11 13:27:59 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-net@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9C454547BA4 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 13:27:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from cristian.cardoso11@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ed1-x52e.google.com (mail-ed1-x52e.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:4864:20::52e]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "GTS CA 1O1" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4Dby9p4cl9z3l7W for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 13:27:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from cristian.cardoso11@gmail.com) Received: by mail-ed1-x52e.google.com with SMTP id df22so6955578edb.1 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 05:27:58 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20161025; h=mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=ersj9VmnReMTLjIbPj1A/Km08oOEJ9ZXcKQ86oSrQmw=; b=k1Iq23uTpA7lhxcScYo7OIhQFHuC2o5BXqCJ/vVpD6i7vBUZxzQRfEtNwh60puYEy2 /VtbZ1strx5PTVixKwRKfcOwKq/T7Zu3bz8DBPoEIuHwit9eWone9TZNnwbCwEFvXtZ2 LPQsGTwNkz25D7v7QEWGJhREDVkiEQXgzYbzZij71Y3F4ucDyWXMpMUAkHg6FE9R7DXb 8ZUZjhgoDKVBXeGA7/vZ1Urq6+s1Ueous+3FbPLlqytF/NZS3YDP1WRi/vx4rPP5Z7N3 +bhnV4IKj8cys229K43zhoB06/qoITbVZB587D6RN6ZglGXfvkxdTIUrFYJIp8H29Z/A 4R8g== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:from:date:message-id:subject:to; bh=ersj9VmnReMTLjIbPj1A/Km08oOEJ9ZXcKQ86oSrQmw=; b=jE2O4Q+Si+VAHHAvc0A09B+0gWWtDtbzc8jnxIkqiEQGFm2vUvmK6UTHltE0SFwcsv u/f0nKR2Wm5qX+5TixDNLwonDfgpqkTkg9RriTyeENMVsOiAg7piSGxRB2OHgKQPOuzd 953GH0qmEqYNqkCcjuaR9TLQNOdP09/WzwgFe8/kryCFW3fF4Tx6bDrljItNBtca6Ky+ H9EN40B7HI2fr9Bl6FnHCCMJi476KdpRbHWj+NHz4jh/amvminDGkCR7STzEzlRfNAOn 3OEo6uogapYONwmKe+Cw7ypq/6Dzp3tqh1bMcrlkOMLsM3FHY/Lb/0m2vhEZ4yfZ4Vpf 9gkA== X-Gm-Message-State: AOAM530cZh4Fue8Ecyx3pa3/WlId9SgqVnK1/ug5aLs2VT/z0JLIUtiX sPjShdVwb5RrMfkdCL+cXRKYsYygjqnqWqAQSI+8lU/xGSq5 X-Google-Smtp-Source: ABdhPJyKNRDj89KYysubwHD2/Q7OvzNgRK7nj9ostJlH75Ob7PjlYoNjj919hp8pEMc98TgVXPjBn4oPa5QZaXUSo/M= X-Received: by 2002:a05:6402:ce:: with SMTP id i14mr8411235edu.42.1613050076384; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 05:27:56 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Cristian Cardoso Date: Thu, 11 Feb 2021 10:27:44 -0300 Message-ID: Subject: CARP interface To: freebsd-net@freebsd.org Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4Dby9p4cl9z3l7W X-Spamd-Bar: --- Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=gmail.com header.s=20161025 header.b=k1Iq23uT; dmarc=pass (policy=none) header.from=gmail.com; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of cristiancardoso11@gmail.com designates 2a00:1450:4864:20::52e as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=cristiancardoso11@gmail.com X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-4.00 / 15.00]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip6:2a00:1450:4000::/36:c]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[gmail.com]; TO_DN_NONE(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[gmail.com:+]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[gmail.com,none]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-1.00)[-1.000]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; RBL_DBL_DONT_QUERY_IPS(0.00)[2a00:1450:4864:20::52e:from]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[gmail.com]; ASN(0.00)[asn:15169, ipnet:2a00:1450::/32, country:US]; TAGGED_FROM(0.00)[]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[gmail.com:dkim]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[gmail.com:s=20161025]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; PREVIOUSLY_DELIVERED(0.00)[freebsd-net@freebsd.org]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; SPAMHAUS_ZRD(0.00)[2a00:1450:4864:20::52e:from:127.0.2.255]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[2a00:1450:4864:20::52e:from]; RCVD_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; RCVD_TLS_ALL(0.00)[]; MAILMAN_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-net] X-BeenThere: freebsd-net@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 11 Feb 2021 13:27:59 -0000 Hi I would like to clarify a doubt, if someone has this scenario in the use of CARP for the use of virtual ips in interfaces in FreeBSD. I have an interface where I have the 10.19.254.2/24 network and I am placing the virtual IP 10.19.254.3/32 in the CARP, this interface does not have a default gateway, but a static route "10.0.0.0/8 gw 10.19.254.1". When I activate CARP, the interface stops communicating with IP 10.19.254.1 and with that I have no external access on the machine. Could anyone tell me if this is the normal behavior of CARP or is it not even for scenarios where the interface has static routes? I checked the handbook and several manuals over the internet, I didn't find anything related to validate my scenario. By accident our software started to quickly re-use a source TCP port when connecting to a remote system. That is, after a graceful shutdown of a connection (two FINs, etc), the software would quickly establish an identical connection by re-using the same local port and connecting to the same remote end-point. That did not work well for the application :) We saw problems where packets from the second connection would be dropped by ipfw. That happened because there would be no dynamic rule to let the packets through even though the first connection worked without any issues. >From a quick glance at the code it seems that the TCP protocol state kept by ipfw for dynamic rules is "append-only". That is, bits can be set in it but never cleared. So, when the first connection is closed the dynamic has "both syn" and "both fin" bits. When the second connection is established before the rule is expired, the rule is re-used for it, but its state remains the same. And its expiry time remains dyn_fin_lifetime. I think that that opens a race between the expiry timer (running every second) and the connection's packets given the short lifetime. Maybe I misanalyzed the situation and it's probably very rare. But still it's a valid use of TCP, so maybe ipfw could support it better (e.g., by detecting "syn" after "both fin"). -- Andriy Gapon From owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org Thu Feb 11 15:20:03 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-net@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 98D3E52B701 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 15:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kudzu@tenebras.com) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (mailman.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:13]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4Dc0g72cxLz3tp3 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 15:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kudzu@tenebras.com) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 59EBE52B3D6; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 15:20:03 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: net@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 59B1552B3D5 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 15:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kudzu@tenebras.com) Received: from mail-lj1-x22e.google.com (mail-lj1-x22e.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:4864:20::22e]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "GTS CA 1O1" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4Dc0g71y8jz3tgC for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 15:20:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kudzu@tenebras.com) Received: by mail-lj1-x22e.google.com with SMTP id x1so1143888ljj.11 for ; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 07:20:03 -0800 (PST) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=tenebras-com.20150623.gappssmtp.com; s=20150623; h=mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date:message-id:subject:to :cc; bh=Z9/xWgXivLTy+9FCTaxQb1QyVsGWl0Gwz9wSIdaUFl8=; b=fqKkmW7mbZaVD2qVhgkQjk35clTS+2FNbDR+nz7RacgJ1AEevI4UeHUO9ppGmXb7MM jF4Vzn+1Z0fZBg3b9fX5d42fU+dBUjrVohkw+esQka7fjaoyJy1qELu2aQPgms8Rm2Bz zZCCTJOazZYD+r0iOGW4idCdFQtOcrahx9J8B/NRrGzgvngODxmrWu83x4qtxrHdsmF5 2DnyVFLxGRrwRvMe7Jw8tsgK7wBmfq18RYsdvXTHYc0IRnvT9WvvqrZo6ki9BnRNke5x VeN0Z0mb2VwQ3S9e2ojCJqDHFwpQySAvJNK9ZB0zTkkkLLhX9UosZGNBeNYr7i7lwmFD zHcQ== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20161025; h=x-gm-message-state:mime-version:references:in-reply-to:from:date :message-id:subject:to:cc; bh=Z9/xWgXivLTy+9FCTaxQb1QyVsGWl0Gwz9wSIdaUFl8=; b=rshksczlUPY1tP4WkOaF7MKl1gO2shq8xruE39rEMs+WhrDyDBGEn7zZ8fsT+qqIHv N/Dj7AltzDPrj1wKkmLL3Fe0QtTMRGu11C5Tm9Qlv2MomL4kEi8QXXvPEqcTZVLE24s/ w5LN0oyGAQ4qXaOBWDBOGBTvnR7I8T1o2+7xmQGZES4Odej/0qUwilgP5YtruNdgchD2 4CTyB9qoCk3FmAESsjYN6XeGfk+OGCmIgOIno1I3w4MAk5Nn7XE1s3YmsFV0BCrjv1G5 3qlmfxam+6VhoAtRMUAr7MXdpTb9cWLYKaphOSkPU9aE6V7FgkrJk4b13D4ue6ly/CSh h50w== X-Gm-Message-State: AOAM532G+KU+lL88+wstU1iOxqTjubXm0O0AP0d0JWsLVPWGWoNWed+S Tgw7qLx8ZfBYHdEQTiOjz4S0zLgoc+YFsweVzWnZ/A== X-Google-Smtp-Source: ABdhPJykMNmmHdvB7BVBs7DV55utDYg2NsoiCjAt23QgVMBL8YzDZ2ar9gw+H1d55bHyEDCpQtK2piwqI3C9VdiiyEo= X-Received: by 2002:a2e:b80b:: with SMTP id u11mr5224246ljo.361.1613056801227; Thu, 11 Feb 2021 07:20:01 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <5ccab312-085c-b764-97c9-4c2bc846cd22@FreeBSD.org> In-Reply-To: <5ccab312-085c-b764-97c9-4c2bc846cd22@FreeBSD.org> From: Michael Sierchio Date: Thu, 11 Feb 2021 07:19:25 -0800 Message-ID: Subject: Re: ipfw stateful rules and quick port re-use To: Andriy Gapon Cc: "freebsd-net@freebsd.org" , "Andrey V. I can reproduce this in a bhyve VM by repeating this: vlan=`ifconfig vlan create vlandev vtnet0 vlan 777` ifconfig $vlan up ifconfig $vlan 1.0.0.1/24 ifconfig $vlan destroy If I watch the ifaddr column of vmstat -m while I repeat this, I see it increasing by one every time. Poking around with dtrace confirms that it's an AF_INET address that's getting leaked. Looking at the calls to ifa_ref and ifa_free, the routing code looks suspicious. I see that the route add path takes one reference here: https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/tree/sys/net/route/route_ctl.c#n588 kernel`rib_add_route+0x11e kernel`rib_handle_ifaddr_info+0xd7 kernel`in_handle_ifaddr_route+0x1cd kernel`in_addprefix+0x18b kernel`in_control+0xada kernel`ifioctl+0x3d8 kernel`kern_ioctl+0x289 kernel`sys_ioctl+0x12a kernel`amd64_syscall+0x12e kernel`0xffffffff8108b9be (for me directly in the else case, or rt_getifa_fib() will take one on the ifa it grabs) I see a second reference taken in the nhop code: kernel`get_nhop+0xd8 kernel`nhop_create_from_info+0x1df kernel`rib_add_route+0x12e kernel`rib_handle_ifaddr_info+0xd7 kernel`in_handle_ifaddr_route+0x1cd kernel`in_addprefix+0x18b kernel`in_control+0xada kernel`ifioctl+0x3d8 kernel`kern_ioctl+0x289 kernel`sys_ioctl+0x12a kernel`amd64_syscall+0x12e kernel`0xffffffff8108b9be But I only see one reference released when the nhop is cleaned up: kernel`destroy_nhop_epoch+0x2d kernel`epoch_call_task+0x13a kernel`gtaskqueue_run_locked+0xa7 kernel`gtaskqueue_thread_loop+0x94 kernel`fork_exit+0x80 kernel`0xffffffff8108c11e It looks to me like we can either lose the ifa_ref() from create_rtentry entirely (if the route add code runs within the net_epoch), or we need to release that reference before returning from rib_add_route(). Can somebody take a look at this and confirm my findings? Oops, you're completely correct. Do you think that we should put a KASSERT in ifa_ref() that ifa_refcnt > 0 to catch such a bug if somebody ever manages to introduce one? Of course it would not fire except in the case where we already lost the race, but at least it would make it easier to debug.
