We will be switching over once we bring the fleet of appliances up to 13.0 upon release. If you are using 11.4, virtio-stor is your only option if you are after performance. While you can use ahci-hd, this is shockingly slow. About 2 versions ago of the VirtIO stack users of the virtio-stor drivers saw a regression in the driver take out whole virtual storage devices. Running the latest one as at 11 April 2021 should be fine for you. > I'll leave the sector/block size issues to others. We have observed significant storage consumption when using this smaller block size, likely due to the checksum overhead for small amounts of committed data. No need for other virtio drivers. NVMe is the general direction storage is taking, doesn't require the drivers to be injected at installation time and lower usability friction. The regression was due to a bug in the virtio-stor code that would nuke your storage as soon as the driver loaded after upgrading it the following boot. That was discussed on a bhyve call last year. It is no longer an issue with the latest driver if you wish to continue to use virtio-stor. Cheers, Jason. With CPU being busy with rand_harvestq, things were incredibly slow, so, as= a non-reboot work around, I did: mv /boot/kernel/virtio_random.ko{,.disabled} kldunload virtio_random (Mina's suggestion is better as it survives a reboot) Which actually allows me to use the VM meanwhile. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug. I was able to boot a kernel from today (15 Ap= ril) on this machine. I tracked the issue down to the tcp_bbr or cc_htcp. I build the system with WITH_EXTRA_TCP_STACKS=3D1 and have tcp_bbr_load=3D"YES" cc_htcp_load=3D"YES" in /boot/loader.conf and net.inet.tcp.cc.algorithm=3Dhtcp net.inet.tcp.functions_default=3Dbbr in /etc/sysctl.conf. I first disabled the sysctl.conf settings and the panic is still happening.= So it is enough to load the modules at boot time. If I disable both modules the system is starting as usual. If one of these modules is loaded at boot time, the system panics. Maybe it is something locking related. Hope that helps to track down that issue. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org Fri Apr 16 06:59:59 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-virtualization@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 50BB05E731E for ; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (unknown [127.0.1.3]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4FM6Xb1cjGz3Mkd for ; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) id 35D595E741F; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 (UTC) Delivered-To: virtualization@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 35A105E723E for ; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4FM6Xb0xT3z3MsB for ; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 13504202C5 for ; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 13G6xxwA010262 for ; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 13G6xxfQ010261 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 255078] Kernel panic on starting VirtualBox with virtualbox-ose-kmod builded without VIMAGE option Date: Fri, 16 Apr 2021 06:59:59 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 12.2-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: panic X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Many People X-Bugzilla-Who: lunkov@gmail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: attachments.created Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated MIME-Version: 1.0 X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: "Discussion of various virtualization techniques FreeBSD supports."
