I've just updated a couple of machines using xfce from 12.1 to 12.2. Most work fine after the update, but one is slightly broken now. Here are some issues I see: XCFE starts just fine but refuses for open the xfce terminal (nothing happens). Also, logging out is not possible anymore (desktop gets dark, but not logout selection appears). As written in the subject, I think the main reason for this is that polkitd isn't running. Sometimes I can see various error windows popping up complaining about things that point into this direction, also ps doesn't show a polkitd like on the systems that work fine. In /var/log/messages I see the following error message from dbus: --- Jan 18 10:58:57 beastie dbus-daemon[36795]: [system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1': timed out (service_start_timeout=25000ms) --- However, I'm unable to find out /why/ this happens and how to fix it. Some things you could check: look into .xsession-errors, that's where output from user X11 session goes, maybe you can find some hint there. Do expect various scary warnings there, but most are really just noise. Check if you have any core dumps from polkit laying around. I think the root directory is the most likely place. You could also try launching polkitd by hand as a user or as root and see what it says It should also have a --debug flag. Trying to reinstall it (via ports if using ports o with pkg upgrade -f if using binary packages) could help. Same for it's requirements, I get: > pkg info -d polkit-0.118 polkit-0.118: expat-2.2.10 spidermonkey78-78.6.0_1 glib-2.66.4_1,1 gettext-runtime-0.21 dbus-1.12.20_3 So pkg upgrade -f (or rebuilding from ports if that's your method) for all those is worth a try. -- Guido Falsi From owner-freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org Mon Jan 18 10:58:21 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xfce@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 087804E821C for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 10:58:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de) Received: from mailgate2.uni-hannover.de (mailgate2.uni-hannover.de [130.75.2.114]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4DK80D2MR2z3mdW for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 10:58:19 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de) Received: from intranet.aei.uni-hannover.de (ahin1.aei.uni-hannover.de [130.75.117.40]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mailgate2.uni-hannover.de (Postfix) with ESMTPS id F0756234C; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:58:18 +0100 (CET) Received: from arc.aei.uni-hannover.de ([130.75.117.1]) by intranet.aei.uni-hannover.de (IBM Domino Release 9.0.1FP8) with ESMTP id 2021011811581796-6238 ; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:58:17 +0100 Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:58:18 +0100 From: Gerrit =?UTF-8?B?S8O8aG4=?= To: Guido Falsi Cc: freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org Subject: Re: polkit not running after update Message-ID: <20210118115818.400403af@arc.aei.uni-hannover.de> In-Reply-To: References: <20210118112011.70fa6542@arc.aei.uni-hannover.de> Organization: Albert-Einstein-Institut X-Mailer: Claws Mail 3.17.5 (GTK+ 2.24.32; amd64-portbld-freebsd11.4) MIME-Version: 1.0 X-MIMETrack: Itemize by SMTP Server on intranet/aei-hannover(Release 9.0.1FP8|February 23, 2017) at 18/01/2021 11:58:18, Serialize by Router on intranet/aei-hannover(Release 9.0.1FP8|February 23, 2017) at 18/01/2021 11:58:18, Serialize complete at 18/01/2021 11:58:18 X-TNEFEvaluated: 1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII X-Virus-Scanned: clamav-milter 0.102.4 at mailgate2 X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4DK80D2MR2z3mdW X-Spamd-Bar: - Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=none; dmarc=none; spf=none (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de has no SPF policy when checking 130.75.2.114) smtp.mailfrom=gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-1.66 / 15.00]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[mpg.de]; AUTH_NA(1.00)[]; HAS_ORG_HEADER(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED(-0.20)[130.75.2.114:from]; RCPT_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-0.98)[-0.983]; R_SPF_NA(0.00)[no SPF record]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_NA(0.00)[]; R_MIXED_CHARSET(0.62)[subject]; ASN(0.00)[asn:680, ipnet:130.75.0.0/16, country:DE]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; MAILMAN_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-xfce] X-BeenThere: freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: XFCE for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2021 10:58:21 -0000 Am Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:41:07 +0100 schrieb Guido Falsi : > > --- > > Jan 18 10:58:57 beastie dbus-daemon[36795]: [system] Failed to activate > > service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1': timed out > > (service_start_timeout=25000ms) > > --- > > > > > > However, I'm unable to find out /why/ this happens and how to fix it. > > Any hints? > Not easy to guess. I'd take a look at the policyd and dbus policies in /usr/local/etc/polkit-1 and /usr/local/etc/dbus-1. If something changed there recently, do you have any customizations in those files? Especially the file /usr/local/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.conf, is it unmodified from what the port installs? There should be a .sample file you can try a diff from. Since there is a .sample file, if in the past this one was modified from any reason, upgrading or reinstalling the port would not update it. -- Guido Falsi From owner-freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org Mon Jan 18 11:44:37 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xfce@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 849924E8D90 for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:44:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de) Received: from mailgate2.uni-hannover.de (mailgate2.uni-hannover.de [130.75.2.114]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4DK91d0RhSz3pfq for ; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:44:36 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de) Received: from intranet.aei.uni-hannover.de (ahin1.aei.uni-hannover.de [130.75.117.40]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)) (No client certificate requested) by mailgate2.uni-hannover.de (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 312192364; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 12:44:35 +0100 (CET) Received: from arc.aei.uni-hannover.de ([130.75.117.1]) by intranet.aei.uni-hannover.de (IBM Domino Release 9.0.1FP8) with ESMTP id 2021011812443498-6370 ; Mon, 18 Jan 2021 12:44:34 +0100 Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2021 12:44:34 +0100 From: Gerrit =?UTF-8?B?S8O8aG4=?= To: Guido Falsi Cc: freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org Subject: Re: polkit not running after update Message-ID: <20210118124434.49a1384d@arc.aei.uni-hannover.de> In-Reply-To: <21641b51-cd84-9ed6-6d0c-371efbc0b896@madpilot.net> References: <20210118112011.70fa6542@arc.aei.uni-hannover.de> <20210118115818.400403af@arc.aei.uni-hannover.de> <21641b51-cd84-9ed6-6d0c-371efbc0b896@madpilot.net> Organization: Albert-Einstein-Institut X-Mailer: Claws Mail 3.17.5 (GTK+ 2.24.32; amd64-portbld-freebsd11.4) MIME-Version: 1.0 X-MIMETrack: Itemize by SMTP Server on intranet/aei-hannover(Release 9.0.1FP8|February 23, 2017) at 18/01/2021 12:44:34, Serialize by Router on intranet/aei-hannover(Release 9.0.1FP8|February 23, 2017) at 18/01/2021 12:44:35, Serialize complete at 18/01/2021 12:44:35 X-TNEFEvaluated: 1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII X-Virus-Scanned: clamav-milter 0.102.4 at mailgate2 X-Virus-Status: Clean X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4DK91d0RhSz3pfq X-Spamd-Bar: - Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=none; dmarc=none; spf=none (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de has no SPF policy when checking 130.75.2.114) smtp.mailfrom=gerrit.kuehn@aei.mpg.de X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-1.68 / 15.00]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_NA(0.00)[mpg.de]; AUTH_NA(1.00)[]; HAS_ORG_HEADER(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_MED(-0.20)[130.75.2.114:from]; RCPT_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-1.00)[-1.000]; R_SPF_NA(0.00)[no SPF record]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; R_DKIM_NA(0.00)[]; R_MIXED_CHARSET(0.62)[subject]; ASN(0.00)[asn:680, ipnet:130.75.0.0/16, country:DE]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; MAILMAN_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-xfce] X-BeenThere: freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: XFCE for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Mon, 18 Jan 2021 11:44:37 -0000 Am Mon, 18 Jan 2021 12:19:00 +0100 schrieb Guido Falsi : > I'd take a look at the policyd and dbus policies in > /usr/local/etc/polkit-1 and /usr/local/etc/dbus-1. Even reinstalling polkit before obiously didn't produce it. Anyway, now I just copied over the .sample file manually, restarted... and everything is working again as expected. However, the policy is not actually used because of the wrong filename. The correct filename would be 'xfce4-screensaver' as seen in its source. ${WRKSRC}/src/Makefile.am: -DPAM_SERVICE_NAME=3D\""xfce4-screensaver"\" In most cases, it does not cause any problem because the catch-all /etc/pam.d/other policy is used instead. But, it may cause trouble when you have customized PAM policies in some ways. For example, when you have configured pam_krb5 in /etc/pam.d/system to authenticate users with Active Directory or something like that and do not set local UNIX passwords for the users, those users cannot unlock screen with their AD passwords once xfce4-screensaver activates the screen lock. This is because /usr/local/etc/pam.d/xfce-screensaver is not loaded thus /etc/pam.d/system which will be included by the former is also not loaded. I've found the issue in this particular situation. HOW TO CONFIRM Here are the steps I took to confirm which policies are loaded when I unlock the xfce4-screensaver's screen lock. 1. Install x11/xfce4-screensaver on a cleanly installed desktop system. 2. Add the following lines to the top of the PAM policy files in order to log the loaded policy filename. [/etc/pam.d/system] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger system [/etc/pam.d/other] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger other [/usr/local/etc/pam.d/xfce-screensaver] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger xfce-screensaver 3. Monitor /var/log/messages on a local virtual terminal (Ctrl+Shift+Fx) or a SSH terminal on another host. $ tail -F /var/log/messages 4. On the desktop, lock the screen manually. $ xfce4-screensaver-command --lock 5. Unlock the screen by entering the user password. 6. See which PAM policy was loaded. Jan 19 20:55:28 xrdp genneko[20748]: pam.d/other Jan 19 20:55:28 xrdp genneko[20749]: pam.d/other 7. Copy the xfce-screensaver to xfce4-screensaver in /usr/local/etc/pam.d and edit the previously added line to the new file. [/usr/local/etc/pam.d/xfce4-screensaver] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger xfce4-screensaver 8. Lock the screen again. $ xfce4-screensaver-command --lock 9. Unlock the screen. 10. See which PAM policy was loaded. However, the policy is not actually used because of the wrong filename. The correct filename would be 'xfce4-screensaver' as seen in its source. ${WRKSRC}/src/Makefile.am: -DPAM_SERVICE_NAME=3D\""xfce4-screensaver"\" In most cases, it does not cause any problem because the catch-all /etc/pam.d/other policy is used instead. But, it may cause trouble when you have customized PAM policies in some ways. For example, when you have configured pam_krb5 in /etc/pam.d/system to authenticate users with Active Directory or something like that and do not set local UNIX passwords for the users, those users cannot unlock screen with their AD passwords once xfce4-screensaver activates the screen lock. This is because /usr/local/etc/pam.d/xfce-screensaver is not loaded thus /etc/pam.d/system which will be included by the former is also not loaded. I've found the issue in this particular situation. HOW TO CONFIRM Here are the steps I took to confirm which policies are loaded when I unlock the xfce4-screensaver's screen lock. 1. Install x11/xfce4-screensaver on a cleanly installed desktop system. 2. Add the following lines to the top of the PAM policy files in order to log the loaded policy filename. [/etc/pam.d/system] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger system [/etc/pam.d/other] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger other [/usr/local/etc/pam.d/xfce-screensaver] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger xfce-screensaver 3. Monitor /var/log/messages on a local virtual terminal (Ctrl+Shift+Fx) or a SSH terminal on another host. $ tail -F /var/log/messages 4. On the desktop, lock the screen manually. $ xfce4-screensaver-command --lock 5. Unlock the screen by entering the user password. 6. See which PAM policy was loaded. Jan 19 20:55:28 xrdp genneko[20748]: pam.d/other Jan 19 20:55:28 xrdp genneko[20749]: pam.d/other 7. Copy the xfce-screensaver to xfce4-screensaver in /usr/local/etc/pam.d and edit the previously added line to the new file. [/usr/local/etc/pam.d/xfce4-screensaver] auth optional pam_exec.so /usr/bin/logger xfce4-screensaver 8. Lock the screen again. $ xfce4-screensaver-command --lock 9. Unlock the screen. 10. See which PAM policy was loaded. I see two different issues, but I cannot say if they're independent or not. 1. Some programs take very long until they actually start and open up a visible window. Once the program runs, more of the same windows open up quickly. I've seen this issue most notably with xscreensaver. After typing the name in a terminal or clicking on the item in the start menu, it takes about *1* *minute* until the window opens up. This feels like there is some timeout involved, but I cannot get any error message. 2. Some programs don't show a "highlight" for the menu item the mouse pointer is currently set to. The menues still work as expected, but you don't see what entry is actually selected. Concerned programs are claws-mail and lxterminal. If there should be a single root cause: all affected software appears to still use gtk2, so maybe the issue is buried somewhere there? Is there an easy way to reset gtk2 settings (while keeping everything else)? First I thought that xfce4-terminal might also be affected as it took ages to re-open my saved session. However, maybe it is just trying to start something else before, and that is blocking everything else. Menu highlighting definitely works fine for it. Any hints are greatly appreciated. cu Gerrit -- Dr. Gerrit Kuehn Max-Planck-Institut fuer Gravitationsphysik Albert-Einstein-Institut Callinstrasse 38 30167 Hannover From owner-freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org Thu Jan 21 18:51:53 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xfce@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id B5C8A4DC57E for ; Thu, 21 Jan 2021 18:51:53 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mad@madpilot.net) Received: from mail.madpilot.net (vogon.madpilot.net [159.69.1.99]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4DMBMD3sskz4kXj for ; Thu, 21 Jan 2021 18:51:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mad@madpilot.net) Received: from mail (mail [192.168.254.3]) by mail.madpilot.net (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4DMBM51bzqz6dbs; Thu, 21 Jan 2021 19:51:45 +0100 (CET) Received: from mail.madpilot.net ([192.168.254.3]) by mail (mail.madpilot.net [192.168.254.3]) (amavisd-new, port 10026) with ESMTP id 96D9QMy1Tupg; Thu, 21 Jan 2021 19:51:43 +0100 (CET) Subject: Re: extreme window open delay, missing menu highlight To: Gerrit Kuehn , freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org References: <20210121181216.58e8a61f@comet2.terra.ger> From: Guido Falsi Message-ID: <2b3335fe-a409-1748-779b-62815cc28ad6@madpilot.net> Date: Thu, 21 Jan 2021 19:51:42 +0100 In-Reply-To: <20210121181216.58e8a61f@comet2.terra.ger> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed Content-Language: en-US Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4DMBMD3sskz4kXj X-Spamd-Bar: / X-Spamd-Result: default: False [0.00 / 15.00]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; RBL_DBL_DONT_QUERY_IPS(0.00)[159.69.1.99:from]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[madpilot.net:s=bjowvop61wgh]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; MISSING_MIME_VERSION(2.00)[]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+mx]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; NEURAL_SPAM_SHORT(1.00)[1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; SPAMHAUS_ZRD(0.00)[159.69.1.99:from:127.0.2.255]; RCVD_COUNT_THREE(0.00)[3]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[madpilot.net:+]; RCPT_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[madpilot.net,quarantine]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; ASN(0.00)[asn:24940, ipnet:159.69.0.0/16, country:DE]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; MAILMAN_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-xfce] X-BeenThere: freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.34 Precedence: list List-Id: XFCE for FreeBSD -- porting and maintaining List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: , X-List-Received-Date: Thu, 21 Jan 2021 18:51:53 -0000 On 21/01/21 18:12, Gerrit Kuehn wrote: > Hello, > > I've been "lucky" again and found another machine behaving strangely > after updating to the latest xfce4 (4.16 on 12.2). XFCE itself removed all support for gtk 2. But maybe after upgrading you still have some gtk theme? try grepping your packages for "engine" and "gtk", most probably you can just remove any gtk theme/engine you find. Pay caution anyway, obviously. Also check in ~/.config/gtk-2.0 if you have any custom configurations there. I can't remember the systemwide gtk customization files location, but I'd look into: /usr/local/share/gtk-2.0 /usr/local/share/gtk-engines -- Guido Falsi From owner-freebsd-xfce@freebsd.org Thu Jan 21 18:53:30 2021 Return-Path: Delivered-To: freebsd-xfce@mailman.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mailman.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 9B4D44DC593 for ;
