Seeing= this on the client side:
Jul 10 18:15:18 <kern.crit>= www kernel: smb_smb_negotiate: Don't know how to talk with server xxx (655= 35)
I assume this was during the testing of smb v1, v1 += v2 and pure v2.

I did install samba on the = client so I could use smbclient, hoping for more debugging info.

smbclient -U www -I omphalos -N /tmp/mnt/storage  = ;//mnt/storage
session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE<= br>

and of course, now smbutil doesn't work as it = used to.

The client on busybox allows some c= ustom config to added: is there any logging I can toggle on there?

I am on FreeBSD 13.2-RELEASE-p1 GENERIC amd64

So, to downgrade to the previous kernel would this be the right command-line?

freebsd-update upgrade -r 13.2-RELEASE
freebsd-update install
freebsd-update install
pwd_mkdb /etc/master.passwd
pkg-static install -fy pkg
pkg upgrade -fy
freebsd-update install
reboot

I would try the buildworld, buildkernel before spending time fretting. YMMV.

S5 should cause a press on the power button to gracefully shut down the computer. In my experience this button sometimes works when FreeBSD is otherwise unresponsive.

I guess, the next thing to consider would be graphics.

Hey Graham just a follow-up that things have been stable, until this morning when I woke up to essentially the same; system hung and unresponsive to the keyboard or ssh.

That is possible.  Thanks!

I got "zio_read error: 5 ZFS: i/o error all block copies unavailable " while attempting a reboot. I've verified that hardware is ok and that disks can be read. I booted the system off a flash drive. Prior to boot I loaded kernel and zfs.ko. After searching and trying a number of things I finally found that "zpool import -f -R /tmp/mnt zroot" would actually mount what I assume is the root volume. It contains tmp, var, usr, and zroot. However, there was a directory that apparently, while appearing in "/" was not actually a part of that pool. There is no sign of "/exportables" the missing directory. I don't know where it is. ZFS was set up with all the defaults presented by the installer. Has anyone any idea where to go from here ? The system has 2 drives morrored. So I thought about a fresh install on one drive and resilvering from the other but I'm not sure if that would work or how to go about it. Ant ideas would be appreciated. Can you tell what is the cause of this?

Before backing up my MySQL database, I stop the service with the 'service mysql-server' = stop command

---

Stopping mysql.
cronjobs: No such file or directory.
Waiting for PIDS: 38188.
server stopped

---

This works fine, but every time it is displaying a line, saying ' cronjobs: No such file or directory'
I do have a directory cronjobs from which the command is given (under sh). Also directly as a command under (csh) I get the same display.

Can you tell what is the cause of this?

Best regards,
Jos

Look at th= e script - /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server - for clues.=C2=A0
It= appears to be non-standard. Did you modify it?

ro= ot@svr:/usr/home/wash # service mysql-server stop
Stopping mysql.
Wai= ting for PIDS: 29087.
root@svr:/usr/home/wash # service mysql-server sta= rt
Starting mysql.

I don't see what yo= u are seeing on my server.

Also, I thought that to backu= p MySQL DBs, you need to have the service running, then do:

MySQL -u= root -pmypassword DBNAME > DBNAME.sql #To backup a single DB

OR

mysqldump -uroot -pmypassword --a= ll-databases > mysql_backup.sql=C2=A0

If you ar= e stopping the service and just copy over the directory that contains the D= Bs files, you are doing it wrong!

(do an "echo hello | wall " and see if data gets sent on all the sessions).  Increasing the verbosity of the sshd config to debug1 might shed some light too so you can see what the server process thinks is happening.  Does your app write to a pty ? maybe it was hitting other pty sessions by accident ?     ---Mike From nobody Fri Jul 14 14:28:56 2023 X-Original-To: freebsd-questions@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4R2Ykv0Xvdz4mbXm for ; Fri, 14 Jul 2023 14:29:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from aryeh.friedman@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ej1-x636.google.com (mail-ej1-x636.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:4864:20::636]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "GTS CA 1D4" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4R2Yks5pVnz4QFb for ; Fri, 14 Jul 2023 14:29:09 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from aryeh.friedman@gmail.com) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=gmail.com header.s=20221208 header.b="R5Da3/Kv"; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of aryeh.friedman@gmail.com designates 2a00:1450:4864:20::636 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=aryeh.friedman@gmail.com; dmarc=pass (policy=none) header.from=gmail.com Received: by mail-ej1-x636.google.com with SMTP id a640c23a62f3a-991f956fb5aso248326166b.0 for ; Fri, 14 Jul 2023 07:29:09 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20221208; t=1689344948; x=1691936948; h=to:subject:message-id:date:from:mime-version:from:to:cc:subject :date:message-id:reply-to; bh=pDtkW4VC9g3Nzpo/4TIXhB7AtOgzH2oX7a8ay/+d/i0=; b=R5Da3/KvlZP/7j+5gF7cPMq2N9eOpWw70eXWCZ7Z0T/qkan/1Q5daN4oFVDXrr4/dS tmkCVpYrVW3Mf14pCZr6W8Um7oUfdFfUJjYirY91vWE4BLRgz7ju4qy3eqH060NKW2WF NTgFe/AE/6vBKZ2Sa4VryUmq3AWaRuWcHVhtQA3mJ1yPIOgIh/pquHmOFuxMwyqoiJRA /wRg+bu8qclsxq6s1GrclpUSMyUfHNjfXuZfRba+Cew8p2Bh76sicR5bDPTRIYLVCCYy 2m05cK/Xh2zCMyX/ziu9JcnZz2JkIj6hX7srWvBCSdnNKZ7ZYJIT3aX7gd0htgXru4zE KfaQ== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20221208; t=1689344948; x=1691936948; h=to:subject:message-id:date:from:mime-version:x-gm-message-state :from:to:cc:subject:date:message-id:reply-to; bh=pDtkW4VC9g3Nzpo/4TIXhB7AtOgzH2oX7a8ay/+d/i0=; b=FBTtTf+6qfqCWAHfMyBnyhqnjLHkgZg7RppT++d4PjhLvpanH6V8CyN1dhv1W0R3y5 BzsKhlgV5llg49BHLQD5UhepelgEr1f8vDZpcd78e5UhSH0loH7IBqTD5yRNdEoNjcBe XXfEx4YzesFyzjoS8MMdabIqXKN8sarJQbYwxsjTJEnNWHBP2qOuOtqUU1OstWo+Oxu1 cre6IRP761PAYG5MmqhaJCrCtMvi42TS7Iaa0rFkXCdGv6Ll+la7jH7bDoxMAdHMIMjW qo7BsojT93A5qyPUeXRzxjjFxrYJ/CVZZ3Ujpss8YNhQdfUaTnsfcR00UjUI30WH1gbG M65g== X-Gm-Message-State: ABy/qLamOo16j+IBiZ9PvTK+gTrwqNOZml3RQdyPkEzGErmoZ22NLfSc UzKhevHAT49qI3MBLqKkhU1Oo2VpnaMnA5xZMLexMUVKuIo= X-Google-Smtp-Source: APBJJlH6q3fJeUeKL3DCL8lZtQsz78uh9/qjkIgI2+cep4fUqm0ZJ9AjyZt8ki3QzZZ5435L3xiQXxRYz7mAPOpE0qk= X-Received: by 2002:a17:906:9146:b0:989:450:e585 with SMTP id y6-20020a170906914600b009890450e585mr3746313ejw.45.1689344948079; Fri, 14 Jul 2023 07:29:08 -0700 (PDT) List-Id: User questions List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-questions List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-questions@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 From: Aryeh Friedman Date: Fri, 14 Jul 2023 10:28:56 -0400 Message-ID: Subject: OT: how to make a ssh/showmount usable with no internet To: FreeBSD Mailing List Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" X-Spamd-Result: default: False [0.07 / 15.00]; NEURAL_SPAM_LONG(1.00)[0.999]; NEURAL_SPAM_MEDIUM(0.98)[0.980]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-0.91)[-0.908]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[gmail.com,none]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[gmail.com:s=20221208]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip6:2a00:1450:4000::/36]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[gmail.com]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; BLOCKLISTDE_FAIL(0.00)[2a00:1450:4864:20::636:server fail]; PREVIOUSLY_DELIVERED(0.00)[freebsd-questions@freebsd.org]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[2a00:1450:4864:20::636:from]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[gmail.com:dkim]; TAGGED_FROM(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[gmail.com:+]; TO_DN_ALL(0.00)[]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROMTLD(0.00)[]; MLMMJ_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-questions@freebsd.org]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; ASN(0.00)[asn:15169, ipnet:2a00:1450::/32, country:US]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[gmail.com]; RCVD_COUNT_TWO(0.00)[2] X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4R2Yks5pVnz4QFb X-Spamd-Bar: / X-ThisMailContainsUnwantedMimeParts: N Due to some t-storms my internet is up and down like nuts today but the upshot is it seems that even local ssh requires a reverse DNS lookup and thus has a very long hang before connecting. Due to some t-storms my internet is up and down like nuts today but

Additional question: what additional steps do I need to make the
system completely separable from the internet (I already ran into
reverse DNS issues with showmount). (I use NFS but not NIS for most
stuff)

Regarding reverse DNS lookup causing long client connect times:

On the SSH server edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config
uncomment and modify the following directive
UseDNS no
restart the sshd service.

sshd_config(5)

UseDNS Specifies whether sshd(8) should look up the remote host name,
        and to check that the resolved host name for the remote IP
        address maps back to the very same IP address.
        The default is “yes”

So, to downgrade to the previous kernel would this be the right command-line?

freebsd-update upgrade -r 13.2-RELEASE
freebsd-update install
freebsd-update install
pwd_mkdb /etc/master.passwd
pkg-static install -fy pkg
pkg upgrade -fy
freebsd-update install
reboot

(instructions essentially from here: https://lifeforms.nl/20141224/downgradin= g-with-freebsd-update)

I should not treat freebsd-update as a sane approach to downgrading.

Instead, if downgrade is essential, build from source.

So, to downgrade to the previous kernel would this be the right command-line?

freebsd-update upgrade -r 13.2-RELEASE
freebsd-update install
freebsd-update install
pwd_mkdb /etc/master.passwd
pkg-static install -fy pkg
pkg upgrade -fy
freebsd-update install
reboot

(instructions essentially from here:
https://lifeforms.nl/20141224/downgradin= g-with-freebsd-update)

I should not treat freebsd-update as a sane approach to downgrading.

Instead, if downgrade is essential, build from source.

On the releng/13.2 branch <https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/log/?h=3Drele= ng/13.2>, tag release/13.2.0 (preceding patch 1) is at:
