Indeed, I took the release images for granted as the official archives from
that handbook chapter. But the whole chapter has an example of NFS mounted =
root
file system as read-only. So I think there should be no "need" of /rescue, =
as
you also have mentioned.

So rc.initdiskless itself over read-only root file system does not need the=
 tar
binary from /rescue, does it?
