--- Comment #3 from Helmut <helmut.schlattl@web.de> ---

Using a clean FreeBSD-14.1 image the bug did not appear.

There was apparently some inconsistency between kernel and "world" between =
14.0
and 14.1.

So I am closing the bug.

gdb bt output from core dump

Doing git clone, for example of FreeBSD src repo, fails with:

root@generic:~ # git clone https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-src.git
Cloning into 'freebsd-src'...
remote: Enumerating objects: 5100659, done.
remote: Counting objects: 100% (3293/3293), done.
remote: Compressing objects: 100% (1839/1839), done.
fatal: fetch-pack: invalid index-pack output.52 MiB | 2.06 MiB/s

Doing clone using ssh:// yields the same results. Sometimes it take
longer/shorter to fail with error. Downloading big files using fetch/pkg al=
so
works without any issues.

Tested on both real hardware (OrangePi Plus 2E) and under qemu, using
14.1-RELEASE image on both and git from pkg.

Attaching gdb bt output from core dump. Also did truss on the run and the e=
rror
before fail is:
write(4,"\M-d\M-*~nW>\M-K\M^N\M-Z\M-3\M-{"...,8192) ERR#32 'Broken pipe'

Doing the same using FreeBSD-13.4-RELEASE-arm-armv7-GENERICSD.img works wit=
hout
any errors.

Command I use for running qemu:

qemu-system-arm -bios edk2-arm-code.fd -M virt -cpu cortex-a7 -smp 4 -m 2G
-drive format=3Draw,file=3DFreeBSD-14.1-RELEASE-arm-armv7-GENERICSD.img,if=

Well, =E2=80=A6 estimation ...,
To say it in short:
While RK3399 HDMI even worked with fbsd-efifb on an old installation on =
my Rock960(which is the same gpu as the RockPro64) ,
this will not happen for the RK3328/ Rock64.

In longer but simple words :
Needed 5 minutes to hack u-boot`s current version to get HDMI - output =
on the RK3328/ Rock64..
It works because u-boot(and linux) has built in driver for the hdmi-inno =
phy.
So the dts devicetree- entries for the hdmi_phy point to that driver ( =
which is glued in their drm).
So u-boot sets up it=E2=80=99s framebuffer based on this driver while it =
cannot be handed over to FreeBSD=20
because it`s not implemented FreeBSD (as Manu said) .
So from u-boot`s framebuffer(or whatever hdmi-output) the screen turns =
back to dark black exactly in the moment of the=20
handover to fbsd kernel, no automatically efifb.
 I don`t assume that a dedicated developer will port/write the necessary =
hdmi-drivers=20
for the outdated RK3328/Rock64 because (e.g in this thread) currently =
exactly 1 person(not me) is known to need the glass console for that =
Soc...but you never know=E2=80=A6.

I'm on rc5 and by default it's not enabled.

So I kinda see what's going on.
For some reason the video isn't considered as a valid console, setting
stdout to be serial, vidconsole doesn't work. I couldn't find why or if
there is some way to enable this for the rock64 but I think that this
is why efifb doesn't work, since this is not a valid console for u-boot
I think that the u-boot drivers de-init the hdmi and all when we get
into the kernel (even if loader sees the GOP as valid).
I don't think that I have enought motivation to look further.

 Cheers,

Yes, not by default, but I guess yo`ve seen the u-boot logo now on rc5=20=

Yes, serial/vidconsole (in that order) is the default for quite all =
defconfigs in u-boot.
I know where to hack/change that in u-boot but I also think that a =
massive u-boot hack is not what we want.
U-boot hands over to the dw- linux driver(which contains inno hdmi) in =
the dts-source and we fail to handle the dts/driver.
while I also think the GOP nevertheless should persist visible for bsd.
Normally I would say that they don`t expose the frame buffer address by =
default, but then why does it work on RK3399 , puuuhh..
Also don`t know if my motivation for looking further is big enough :-)=20=

but thanks to point to the GOP-issue and vidconsole stuff,

Regards
K.

            Bug ID: 281727
Summary: Random MAC addresses on Quartz64 Model A
           Product: Base System
           Version: CURRENT
          Hardware: arm64
                OS: Any
            Status: New
          Severity: Affects Only Me
          Priority: ---
         Component: arm
          Assignee: freebsd-arm@FreeBSD.org
          Reporter: peterj@FreeBSD.org

u-boot consistently reports:

eth1addr=3D56:3a:08:15:f8:e2
ethaddr=3D56:3a:08:15:f8:e3

But the kernel reports different MAC addresses on virtually every boot:

eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:bf:9e:8f:02
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:bf:9e:8f:02
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:ed:33:47:38
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:e1:a4:cd:18
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:5f:40:45:56
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:c0:9f:1d:50
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:3b:4c:ae:26
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:5d:65:dd:b3
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:e8:20:56:db
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:9d:53:2e:bd
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:27:26:8b:49
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:a3:90:da:3b
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:e0:4c:b6:c0
eqos0: Ethernet address: f2:00:e0:4c:b6:c0

In any case, FreeBSD 11 is long out of support.

--- Comment #4 from Peter Jeremy <peterj@FreeBSD.org> ---
I've now tried a couple of reboots and the MAC address seen by the kernel is
consistent when using u-boot 2024.07, so I'll consider this fixed since tha=
t's
the current version in ports.

Note that the address seen by the kernel is completely different to the add=
ress
reported by u-boot printenv - that will impact anyone trying to use DHCP fr=
om
u-boot but that's a separate issue.
