Yesterday I installed FreeBSD 14-RELEASE and it was a headache. I wanted the GNOME desktop environment, so I navigated the FreeBSD Handboo= k table of contents to section 8.2.2. GNOME and followed the instructions.= The outcome was that GNOME didn't work. The problem was that GNOME depends on either the X Window System or Waylan= d on FreeBSD being installed and they weren't installed. There was no ment= ioned of them needing to be installed under section 8.2.2 GNOME. Section 8.1 Synopsis states the user should understand how to install eith= er the X Window System or Wayland on FreeBSD, but I didn't see that as I a= rrived at section 8.2.2 GNOME by navigating the table of contents. I suggest stating at the start of section 8.2.2 GNOME that either the X Wi= ndow System or Wayland on FreeBSD needs to be installed, and also do it un= der the sections of the other the desktop environments. And section 8.1 Synopsis doesn't actually state the X Window System or Way= land on FreeBSD needs to be installed, it just states the user needs to un= derstand how to install them. That isn't clear. It should state the X Wind= ow System or Wayland on FreeBSD needs to be installed in order to use a de= sktop environment. I also suggest creating a section in the FreeBSD Handbook called 'Window s= ystems' and bringing the the X Window System section and Wayland on FreeBS= D section into it as subsections. Then, for example, instead of it stating GNOME requires the X Window Syste= m or Wayland on FreeBSD being installed, it can just state that GNOME requ= ires a window system be installed. Its probably explained somewhere in the thousand page manual but most people don't have time to read it all, and they shouldn't have to read it all for something which could easily be explained on the spot. :) Sincerely, Kolusion From nobody Sun Dec 31 21:00:14 2023 X-Original-To: doc@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4T3BMf63FBz55Hcp for ; Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4T3BMf3Zx9z3Wck for ; Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1704056414; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=Nb9YV9lfMG8LY0b8l0W3sHvdKAPbeBPuZCJEmqvQcxq09SKUYXPUXxFTMeHT2QZoHFyc7S o1574W0dphuzn3jnQ+BfL4tAZ1y5oE1iXI5+++xKMlYpbQXLHF3MxrJcjhGySHb4Zq8sdI yG0hitjhzvdS0r0zEB9ap7pn5UJdUvGDksCFw4WB6UJ13snDcrBSlo7Y44Z1pcmbFAk8z+ tSk+1EsDRw9k4nAKi9LgfYEQFmV4UXq/wqVC+FYEcSUksbhsx3rJXUOFklRcx0KJPH7Q/v yHt5Xw6d47LMwf1fccRl1uEHe/Xsb+zskj9UsAN9NnCa7er+xFY93LD4kF5PCQ== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1704056414; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding; bh=YGxxEe88Bkb1y339tMdmsK0yzZEkMPNEmGLpA7EerXo=; b=y3MYyQ4A+C8Fj7HkvH5FPZolIhGHYdcOnTTm8tHKsabqwRMnOh3BSVbo3+BSXZ6M7/zz1L 6PLYNaBqfW84dGCF10fx3QsieVCBlmbZDm9/Df0AR9pPafRVWTY4OynbJ1qRffHE15DvrF ipv3yhefREWm/QqVT2HcOp65IsjON/IkNYuRDMliFmhUyB/ESY0rE+zC7I9cCbf5rp2tdx d4yuRHcQinDZxo5kjmz8T5Lyme57eAL1n4kvOYtXfXkVttWD+v3zybhoKlGi2x5hbyiUw7 A7jhPSQ/zO+H9MW+tM8xUK2TD6VTeynPUs9S3VTepFdpTVHacSHjkaWGq9SuyQ== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4T3BMf2fTbzpmQ for ; Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 3BVL0EqW058462 for ; Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Received: (from bugzilla@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 3BVL0EPt058461 for doc@FreeBSD.org; Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org) Message-Id: <202312312100.3BVL0EPt058461@kenobi.freebsd.org> X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: bugzilla set sender to bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@FreeBSD.org To: doc@FreeBSD.org Subject: Problem reports for doc@FreeBSD.org that need special attention Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 +0000 List-Id: Documentation project List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-doc List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="17040564141.a49eeCD.56781" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit --17040564141.a49eeCD.56781 Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2023 21:00:14 +0000 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" To view an individual PR, use: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=(Bug Id). This would then mean the FreeBSD Handbook wouldn't need to sy= stematically indicate or state the command requires superuser privileges. So instead of the FreeBSD Handbook incorrectly stating to execute this... # pkg install gnome ... The FreeBSD Handbook would instead state to execute this: sudo pkg install gnome This way doesn't require the user knowing what '#' means which saves them = time, a bad experience, and it makes using FreeBSD more practical. > Sent: Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 12:51 pm > From: "Kolusion K" > To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org > Subject: Systematic broken instructions > > Hi, > > > The FreeBSD Handbook has a systematic problem where it gives literal ins= tructions that don't work. > > For example, section 8.2.2.1. When I say the flow of wording, I mean syntax. Section 20.12.2. Setting Quota Limits states "To verify that quotas are enabled, run:". Section 20.13.1. Disk Encryption with gbde states "FreeBSD provides a kernel module for gbde which can be loaded with this command:". Section 20.14.1. Configuring Encrypted Swap states "To overwrite the current swap partition with random garbage, execute the following command:". 'run', 'with this command', 'execute the following command'... I think flow of wording should be used consistently because it helps users psychologically interpreting instructions more easily as they become more familiar and habitual with a consistent flow. I think terminology should be used consistently because some users may think for example that running and executing are two different things. And I think consistent use of both flow of wording and terminology makes the FreeBSD Handbook look more polished. I think 'run' is a better term than 'execute' because 'run' is a term used a lot more by people, especially verbally. And 'run' sounds a lot less nerdy than 'execute'. :) Sincerely, Kolusion From nobody Mon Jan 1 01:44:19 2024 X-Original-To: freebsd-doc@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4T3JgT5Z2rz55qWV for ; Mon, 1 Jan 2024 01:44:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kolusion@post.com) Received: from mout.gmx.com (mout.gmx.com [74.208.4.200]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange ECDHE (P-256) server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mout.gmx.com", Issuer "GeoTrust TLS RSA CA G1" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4T3JgS6TbLz4bp3 for ; Mon, 1 Jan 2024 01:44:20 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from kolusion@post.com) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=post.com header.s=s1089575 header.b=FnolyCmk; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of kolusion@post.com designates 74.208.4.200 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=kolusion@post.com; dmarc=pass (policy=none) header.from=post.com DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=post.com; s=s1089575; t=1704073460; x=1704678260; i=kolusion@post.com; bh=8ZscpkK5i0gnRE5w0XGbQX/9thWskejNBlznVFxi4N0=; h=X-UI-Sender-Class:From:To:Subject:Date; b=FnolyCmk9j6JMUx8ALYwMayl9PiPVqlvR0j5bDD9XQWEEqfqzrsC3LRwd8mgenWy 7kc5XnzMG+d0G0DYf+46JsQaRefqDlE5ISGLtoz7vV4gnId7oIbPmNdcN34uKjaBf nZ+4Zeqtiz9aQ3wGI+RckvR85xrgYxmAISTGbLslm4wUqwtxd0sn8N7sUkfb9n9Id 257ndG0DnnkfinXPFe6eN0oif8gkTXEnrOqMJ+DWjhtteXhelzIWYTmGndqdoRgda TsD+kEnDJTxn28VRf27c/xYfAKnMNNEAxjFTZL4agmRg8DivUyPByfrRt3yZ1NTvu yqnThaGqNwAuGq2vcg== X-UI-Sender-Class: f2cb72be-343f-493d-8ec3-b1efb8d6185a Received: from [10.237.66.2] ([10.237.66.2]) by msvc-mesg-gmxus005.server.lan (via HTTP); Mon, 1 Jan 2024 02:44:19 +0100 List-Id: Documentation project List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-doc List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-doc@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Message-ID: From: Kolusion K To: freebsd-doc@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Inconsistent use of both flow of wording and terminology Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Importance: normal Sensitivity: Normal Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2024 02:44:19 +0100 X-Priority: 3 X-Provags-ID: V03:K1:9QLFfeB0Mi0fkClsk+fL+SaWw+XjrzpWwtwczGXzfyvinhCEcucY8+nMJoXQRWkRJ9xck BWiXA37v1HHRrv0+Jur98M4YsbGnd1HoEI+8f/u8leM348tflCs4a1tnGp1S9bbph5Ys4VRW1Wwm 0SicDUdhtqthB5cu/rZrFAftcQb1vuLMbvubId56OJt6OB/A2W4Dl7avJH46UbSpGFjDKnrC2ycQ 22DUT/HeTkCUVgp/k7nwlBOoVOTrsMxAWb2sfbEzBKtOO/M5C8+irksWoROMxwjgVvRlsTO+GRCe W4= X-Spam-Flag: NO UI-OutboundReport: notjunk:1;M01:P0:p7v81jS9g+U=;/yPJjdT6iAWPvhNwLl/VDV5dzNv i6t2fIPDIvrNGqxWJgfTdhQydmHfZ3iwL7R44E5iTrjlhVex28NsvF/G7oRpB6K4bbccYyNvv h0nf61d+nBUeL8RcwbyUldvXiEnZlOd9ivcm0WANsuYFJ7Q/l4Zq6paMKMvzwmNB05JH+S9uH H2xTN3k6Vi0Zl3SjKJjN6mKka9L9dsjoBXQOtfNBs2BiopJFmEtMg9xeapbnFPpGSy1Kd8OuW fQeoeSoJwrV5kW4keGyGO7trgSdPI/p4KMPf0vggEfX2ZWfL+r11ouw7v7z2pJ6XfiVGfUXv/ xSVzuDQtl2kfl7xs6SUQ+h0kS3lmVt7YvqikzSHRHhQ2/1o4RLolk1BrnZ8sE/gO90H5XiMzW s/2h/VMmrSwQJboEpIAaVw69XobVhB3lWmlnTcYyf9TFm3u8u5oIhHEkAGoyWMFlhNlB4M+Nh T82u7XfhVtIWCY+jUNs4eLF92j57QWZUAw8ousm4IoiWr+E082/b0obUlU5KYh21N6rkDKneP /vh90M1N7QeiumZOWCV8XH4BzMdkXMtGce9aom6BeudYglrhzdBmd5lStrQa8QKbQM867pQ0k CFmvTkK517eFnU1XzxKogYUQxfxOOX0O6lnSN+MHL1QqLP43IgpmYxfFB4hdFnVdTi6N4mcTo o3rfzg7CGOJaCUlumE1KKV8SKgN0MHsRFRHj6Fx2X6MdHy2leExMTVsUYAH1n6h7+gdU3UKo6 CYDl20ikkqnkOkJ1Y5NdNZguD9DXMrPZ8piqA/KboqkiO9DW3HnuYXMqrTNwurYstpFEuiAFS alq/3wg/DxZFecamz4m4TVtQ== X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-2.60 / 15.00]; FAKE_REPLY(1.00)[]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-1.00)[-0.998]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[post.com,none]; MID_RHS_NOT_FQDN(0.50)[]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[post.com:s=s1089575]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+ip4:74.208.4.192/26]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; ONCE_RECEIVED(0.10)[]; RWL_MAILSPIKE_GOOD(-0.10)[74.208.4.200:from]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_LOW(-0.10)[74.208.4.200:from]; TO_DN_NONE(0.00)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; FREEMAIL_FROM(0.00)[post.com]; RCVD_TLS_LAST(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[post.com:+]; HAS_X_PRIO_THREE(0.00)[3]; FREEMAIL_ENVFROM(0.00)[post.com]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; MLMMJ_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-doc@freebsd.org]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; ASN(0.00)[asn:8560, ipnet:74.208.0.0/16, country:DE] X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4T3JgS6TbLz4bp3 X-Spamd-Bar: -- After giving it more thought, I think using the terminology with the flow 'run the command:' is good. Minimum Hardware Requirements states the hardware architectures and devices supported by a FreeBSD release are listed on the FreeBSD Release Information page. There is three problems with this: 1. The release information page doesn't list hardware requirements. https://www.freebsd.org/releases/ 2. Knowing if my USB Wi-Fi adapter is a supported device is not a hardware requirement. Knowing how much RAM and storage space I'll need is a system requirement - this information doesn't exist in the release information. 3. The minimum hardware requirements should be in the FreeBSD Handbook. That's the whole point of section 2.2. Minimum Hardware Requirements. Having to go elsewhere for system requirement information when I was following the installation section of the FreeBSD Handbook was a crap experience for me. I felt FreeBSD was scattered and didn't have its act together. Having the system requirements in the FreeBSD Handbook would increase reliability. The party responsible for the release notes didn't include it and as a result caused a problem for the FreeBSD Handbook. I tried to find an explanation but it doesn't exist. I had to take a 'lucky shot' and download the one I thought was the one for my needs. Luckily it was the right one, but if it hadn't been then I would have walked away from FreeBSD because my time is valuable. And this: https://download.freebsd.org/releases/amd64/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/14.0/ What the hell is this? There is no clear explanation of what each file is, which can be confusing for some people. I felt it made FreeBSD look lazy, pathetic and out of touch. This is a very bad thing for gaining new users. I propose making the download page give: a clear explanation of each image; the image size; a description of the image, and; a download button. I.E.: Instead of this... Much of it is straight the point which I appreciate, but I have found a substantial amount of irrelevant information in it. For example, the document includes sections Third Edition, Second Edition (2004), and First Edition (2001). These sections cover new concepts introduced in previous editions of the FreeBSD Handbook, but they are not part of the abstract of the current FreeBSD Handbook and therefore they don't serve the current FreeBSD Handbook any purpose. I have noticed there is a severe quality control problem with the FreeBSD Handbook in which it appears people haven't tested it to confirm its in line with implementation. So, I think there should be a quality control process for the next publication where sections of the book be given to people to test and confirm implementation. I'd volunteer to be one of these people. Also, I think someones going to have to proof read the FreeBSD handbook back to back to get an overall picture of it because there is a lot of contradiction in it. It will be a big job. The FreeBSD Foundation might have to pay someone a reasonable amount to do it, but I think the result would be worth it. I suggest the future FreeBSD Handbook include a relevancy in its names because the FreeBSD Handbook of yesterday isn't the FreeBSD handbook of today and there isn't a indicator on the face of it to indicate its relevancy. I suggest the naming scheme be intuitive, so, for FreeBSD 15-RELEASE, I'd call the handbook the FreeBSD 15-RELEASE Handbook. Also, there is a problem with the current FreeBSD Handbook where both the fourth edition and third edition sections claim to be the current version of the FreeBSD Handbook. Cringe. But is the current FreeBSD Handbook even the fourth edition?! It doesn't actually state what edition it is. Perhaps its the Five Edition and both the Fourth Edition and Third Edition sections are incorrectly claiming to be the current version??

And this another example of why the FreeBSD Handbook needs to be given some sort of identification in its name. It has an identity crisis. :)
