Perhaps not on a production se= rver with many users next time though...=20 I've never been able to get a good kernel dump though when I've tried before but I'll see if I can get it working... The machines have like 512-640GB of= RAM and normally no swap space configured, and we're using an all-ZFS setup so I need to set up some special disks for the dump. I've been looking thru the procstat output in order to try to identify some suspicious processes that might have taken some lock but no obvious candida= tes pop up for me. Perhaps "df" or "procstat" itself. procstat seems to be inside some function called sysctl_root_handler_locked. At the time of the deadlock, besides me doing a lot of "zfs rename" operati= ons there was a backup running (using rsync) that possibly might have been accessing some of the filesystems I was renaming. Also I have the system monitoring script that runs every minute doing stuff (protected with a lock file so I won't end up running a gazillion copies in case something takes a very long time) like "procstat -kk -a", "fstat", "zfs-stats" (and more stuff) that definitively ran a number of times at the same time (that script runs 24/7 and has for many years now). The last outp= ut from that script happened at 00:27 (blocked on "fstat") indicates (from the= "ps auxwww" output) that was happening at the time was: 1. "nzfs clean -y -P10 -L500 -e -E :ttl -T 8h -r -v -V1 DATA/students" ("nzfs" is a special local version of the "zfs" command that implements a "clean" option to more efficiently handle snapshot deletion), but that was cleaing up stuff under DATA/students", the archiving I was doing was under "DATA/staff". 2. 00:23 root-owned process started (zpool iostat) 3. 00:20 "fstat" was started and blocked. Not much active users at that time though (around midnight :-) but some cli= ents where connected. Looking at the saved /var/log/messages output from that time mountd complai= ned at 00:18 about a number of students filesystems with wrong sharenfs attribu= tes (triggered by a zfs rename operation). and then 00:19-00:26 some rsync erro= rs about change_dir to staff/ failing (since they were archived at that time). Ah well... --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Mon Oct 21 13:46:38 2024 X-Original-To: freebsd-fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XXGnK1H1Tz5ZJFw for ; DWL_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[messagingengine.com:dkim] X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4XXGnH6nsCz4Sqq X-Spamd-Bar: --- I'm looking to try to improve nfs client & server performance. The problem I'm seeing is that when clients access the server, if more than one does it at once, the access speed is very 'spiky' and in /var/log/messages on the client, it has things like Oct 20 07:21:55 kernel: nfs server 192.168.1.10:/zroot/share: not responding Oct 20 07:21:55 kernel: nfs server 192.168.1.10:/zroot/share: is alive again Oct 20 07:42:05 kernel: nfs server 192.168.1.10:/zroot/share: not responding Oct 20 07:42:05 kernel: nfs server 192.168.1.10:/zroot/share: is alive again Oct 20 08:29:54 kernel: nfs server 192.168.1.10:/zroot/share: not responding If one client is accessing one file at once, the transfer is very fast. But syncing like rsync or webdav is very problematic and takes much longer than it should. The server is recent 14-stable and exports nfs via the zfs sharenfs property. The clients are a mix of freebsd and linux (debian) I note on the server there's lots of vfs.nfsd sysctl tunables but I'm not sure if thay are relevant in a zfs sharenfs context. There's even more vfs.zfs but nothing pertaining directly to nfs. On a freebsd client, it has these in rc.conf # nfs client stuff nfs_client_enable="YES" Maybe it needs local locks (-L) unsure how to pass flags to the client started in this way. How would I know if local locks were needed? I note in defaults/rc.conf there is nfs_bufpackets="" # bufspace (in packets) for client but I'm not sure what the effects would be. I've so far set 'zfs set sync=disabled' for the particular vdev and 'sysctl vfs.nfsd.maxthreads=256' on the server, about to test this. -- From nobody Mon Oct 21 16:17:05 2024 X-Original-To: freebsd-fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XXL7321zLz5ZT9W for ; There are lots of possibilities, but here are a couple to try... vfs.zfs.dmu_offset_next_sync=3D0 - this makes SEEK_HOLE/SEEK_DATA much faster, but less reliable (as in it might miss finding a hole) vfs.nfsd.cachetcp=3D0 - this disables the DRC cache = for TCP connections (if this helps, there are settings to try to tune he DRC). Disabling the DRC for TCP means that there is a slight chance of corruption, due to duplicate non-idempotent RPCs being done after a TCP reconnect. Has no effect on NFSv4.1/4.2 mounts. rick > -- > From nobody Mon Oct 21 18:52:46 2024 X-Original-To: freebsd-fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XXPZT6nCTz5ZdVR for ; But both 13.2 and 14.1 versions s= till don't wait for confirmation (neither for the read to end or that INTERRUPT = was received), they just sent RELEASE. As was stated before, MooseFS has reference counters anyway, so it handles = the interrupts correctly anyway. Other filesystems using FUSE may not, and if t= hat is the case, their read operations, that get interrupted, may behave unexpectedly (and even end with a segfault). Since Linux kernel waits for t= he read to finish, those filesystems will behave differently there. Linux and FreeBSD are two main systems that implement FUSE, so we kind of feel oblige= d to point this out to you, that's why this thread was first created. But it's = not a direct issue for our filesystem, if that is what you are asking. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Tue Oct 22 09:17:53 2024 X-Original-To: fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XXmmd2Pkfz5F32m for ; So unless there are any other compelling reasons for us to change our behavior, I'm going to close this as "not a bug". --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Tue Oct 22 21:59:04 2024 X-Original-To: fs@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XY5fw5CP2z5ZQfv for ; Tue, 22 Oct 2024 21:59:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R11" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4XY5fw49Whz4FDL for ; Tue, 22 Oct 2024 21:59:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1729634344; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=GvkM82Xw/VZqdGKtGXSWpEzZlUzCypYqYlDeiLkKV9I=; b=jxuYPmrFQV8O6fvDADa2lCfFJgTIZOQnEqdiXcYgn+4I+N6uevDKnF+n3EIXwhnAEEE3/w WH2+tCZH1g8A/Fai3aFw1+l9qKO+XV6aiCu2NZCp2NZ91bCDOThLNYCtViird+kJctI32m 1YVcnR3Pasednl3pzZZg2NhY0ApcYC3bTG/36UqIU+EAuvCoEO+5fAVAbtjG2SdXoANtF5 FAwkwqQQTijsI7nYg9nQBCKnW+qA4LxV1QfTUHEDQHMIrz1Zh/jk3tpdsjWXgk7kwddyeA F9kagiVrwaFFiCjWE6W/pzXJHikVXdEc/Z2F2i7PwjN75DFDRNkUZ047oSCVzw== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1729634344; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=MOmKmSJlOm3hXrCeTgKlXfjSLQ7VW39NqlOuiPeajkU3MNpbK71cucUd1ThsPgr9E0hmLr qsJ3jDKe86qh5t45BVR6GK095pKO3EHIUppxlCeUI5uBQOLdeYA8fJIx6xw+qH+nDvDwOM tH3KwFZK5DPsKtzEK6kMUtkOx//GWKfAJnsH8KRB9KWY+TNvnsSUR6muqTsHkRt+sKRBpz 4fy1JwQglZv8VNzz3evXG1ZXJRa9iHAFyODWkKSYDL2KMEc6upN1AXwiC+ooNYwbPBHKh7 YxL1dB/35G4rrpMdbHmBdHiBgfa386KXniKSIIQaurjlGxJ4vtpP1ICJQXGLJw== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4XY5fw3dVYzXLx for ; Tue, 22 Oct 2024 21:59:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 49MLx4ln082191 for ; Tue, 22 Oct 2024 21:59:04 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from bugzilla@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 49MLx44b082190 for fs@FreeBSD.org; Tue, 22 Oct 2024 21:59:04 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: bugzilla set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: fs@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 282134] [ext2fs] watchdogd fired (with one hour timeout) Date: Tue, 22 Oct 2024 21:59:04 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 15.0-CURRENT X-Bugzilla-Keywords: crash X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: commit-hook@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: Open X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: fs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Filesystems List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-fs List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-fs@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D282134 --- Comment #11 from commit-hook@FreeBSD.org --- A commit in branch main references this bug: URL: https://cgit.FreeBSD.org/src/commit/?id=3De2414d91d33f31d6f2c9f49eef7a1553b= 5798c9e commit e2414d91d33f31d6f2c9f49eef7a1553b5798c9e Author: Doug Moore AuthorDate: 2024-10-22 21:54:34 +0000 Commit: Doug Moore CommitDate: 2024-10-22 21:54:34 +0000 vfs_subr: maintain sorted tailq Pctries are based on unsigned index values. Type daddr_t is signed. Using daddr_t as an index type for a pctrie works, except that the pctrie considers negative values greater than nonnegative ones. Building a sorted tailq of bufs, based on pctrie results, sorts negative daddr_ts larger than nonnegative ones, and makes code that depends on the tailq being actually sorted broken. Write wrappers for the functions that do pctrie operations that depend on index ordering that fix the order problem, and use them in place of direct pctrie operations.
