This time, it was really easy - with HDAC hdac0@pci0:0:31:3: class=0x040100 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 vendor=0x8086 device=0x54c8 subvendor=0x10ec subdevice=0x111e vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = 'Alder Lake-N PCH High Definition Audio Controller' class = multimedia subclass = audio bar [10] = type Memory, range 64, base 0x6001150000, size 16384, enabled bar [20] = type Memory, range 64, base 0x6001000000, size 1048576, enabled (excerpt from 'pciconf -lvb') it works out of the box, just figuring out the correct output was the 'issue'. sysctl hw.snd.default_unit=0 switches default output to external line/speakers, whereas sysctl hw.snd.default_unit=1 switches default output to internal speakers. Now, I just realised, just using 'cat /dev/sndstat' would tell it immediatelly: Installed devices: pcm0: (play) pcm1: (play) default No devices installed from userspace. I could get the sound earlier, I guess :) but it works nicelly, and that's important. So I can watch some video via vlc. Is there anathing interesting I could check? For the completeness, I installed last 15.0 snapshot, 'uname -a' shows FreeBSD yoga.dino.sk 15.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 15.0-CURRENT #0 main-n269103-112783ebbc31: Thu Apr 4 03:36:01 UTC 2024 root@releng3.nyi.freebsd.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/amd64.amd64/sys/GENERIC amd64 Regards, Milan From nobody Thu Apr 11 18:18:46 2024 X-Original-To: freebsd-multimedia@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4VFnyT2Qnbz5HrDQ for ; Thu, 11 Apr 2024 18:18:57 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from christos@freebsd.org) Received: from margiolis.net (mail.margiolis.net [95.179.159.8]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA512) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4VFnyR63vYz4dn8; Thu, 11 Apr 2024 18:18:55 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from christos@freebsd.org) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=margiolis.net header.s=mail header.b=ph9v+txj; dmarc=fail reason="No valid SPF, DKIM not aligned (relaxed)" header.from=freebsd.org (policy=none); spf=softfail (mx1.freebsd.org: 95.179.159.8 is neither permitted nor denied by domain of christos@freebsd.org) smtp.mailfrom=christos@freebsd.org DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=simple/simple; s=mail; bh=zSqFNbeoij2wLYb gMamkF0oy/Y6nZ8DiMvAKKyUbscg=; h=in-reply-to:references:subject:cc:to: from:date; d=margiolis.net; b=ph9v+txjMhlu+nHsar7TuV69k8Jzz6IT8jHzEeHp YzRbbpJh9SuLcrcDRrsHwXcLO0MmEvzh6QnExu4z7BgXn2Mdg+u3qSY8o88M0HORQ7AfRk RRnHytHg2LkVmbfPTKQCPJa4Pyml60ZrPXA9sPhiP1oYJCJaRBpZBgExYTPow= Received: from tpad (ip-45-81-121-44.ask4internet.com [45.81.121.44]) by margiolis.net (OpenSMTPD) with ESMTPSA id a0109bdf (TLSv1.3:AEAD-AES256-GCM-SHA384:256:NO); Thu, 11 Apr 2024 18:18:44 +0000 (UTC) Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2024 20:18:46 +0200 From: Christos Margiolis To: Rainer Hurling Cc: freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org, markj@freebsd.org, jrm@freebsd.org, Baptiste Daroussin Subject: Re: Re: [Development report #9] Audio Stack Improvements Message-ID: References: List-Id: Multimedia discussions List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-multimedia List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: X-Spamd-Bar: -- X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-2.70 / 15.00]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-1.00)[-0.999]; MID_RHS_NOT_FQDN(0.50)[]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[margiolis.net:s=mail]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; DMARC_POLICY_SOFTFAIL(0.10)[freebsd.org : No valid SPF, DKIM not aligned (relaxed),none]; TO_DN_SOME(0.00)[]; ASN(0.00)[asn:20473, ipnet:95.179.144.0/20, country:US]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; MISSING_XM_UA(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; FREEFALL_USER(0.00)[christos]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; RCVD_TLS_ALL(0.00)[]; RCPT_COUNT_FIVE(0.00)[5]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; RCVD_VIA_SMTP_AUTH(0.00)[]; R_SPF_SOFTFAIL(0.00)[~all]; MLMMJ_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-multimedia@freebsd.org]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_SOME(0.00)[]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[margiolis.net:+] X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4VFnyR63vYz4dn8 Hello Rainer, Rainer Hurling wrote: > I also have the problem that since the commits for this project on two > CURRENT boxes sound output via PulseAudio is no longer possible. > > "pactl info" reports that no connection to the server is possible. > > PulseAudio gives the following messages on the console: > > [00002b8cf70615060] vlcpuls audio output error: PulseAudio server connection > failure: connection denied > [00002b8cf70615060] main audio output error: no suitable audio output module > [00002b8cf70615060] main decoder error: failed to create audio output > > The patch of the PCM_WAIT() macro suggested by bapt does not bring any > improvement on my computers. > > In addition, I have the problem that the affected boxes are either extremely > slow during shutdown or cannot complete the shutdown. > > Thanks for your work on the audio system, very appreciated. It should be just small excerpt from the above, but still... HDA setup is a bit of mystery for me, I have GPD MicroPC where I am not able to produce any sound using internal speaker, recently found Yoga Book working with both internal speaker and output line out of the box. For the former, I have a workaround, kind of - when I connect additional monitor via HDMI port, I am able to route sound to that monitor just by setting hw.snd.default_unit=2. It is not the best solution, it just work well enough for me. So this just confirms what I somehow saw above - pcm1 is input only, so for producing sound, setting hw.snd.default_unit=1 is not going to help. Also, I am not sure, but this line, from your verbose output above pcm0: Playback channel matrix is: 2.0 (disconnected) may explain why you are getting no sound. On my Yoga Book, with working sound, I have pcm1: Playback channel matrix is: 2.0 (unknown) definitely different. > > It should be just small excerpt from > > the above, but still... > > > > HDA setup is a bit of mystery for me, I have GPD MicroPC where I am > > not able to produce any sound using internal speaker, recently > > found Yoga Book working with both internal speaker and output line > > out of the box. > > > > For the former, I have a workaround, kind of - when I connect > > additional monitor via HDMI port, I am able to route sound to that > > monitor just by setting hw.snd.default_unit=2. Thanks! > I think it is really easy - connect your HDMI monitor, and you should see new device in 'cat /dev/sndstat' output, probably pcm2. Then, with setting hw.snd.default_unit=2, you should get sound from HDMI monitor speaker(s).
