A HP T610 Thin Client with an onboard bge interface, which boots in UEFI+GPT mode only. And a HP MicroServer N40L wit= h an onboard bge interface, which boots in BIOS+MBR mode only. Both computers we= re set up to dual-boot between FreeBSD 13.2R and FreeBSD 14.0R, with sources installed, and "freebsd-update fetch install" applied. Before my tests, I connected the bge interface of both computers to an isol= ated network switch. For reference I also connected a third computer without a b= ge interface, this had em0. Booted a live Linux from an USB stick on one of th= e 3 computers at a time, shut it down, and successfully woke it up via FreeBSD's built in "wake aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff" command to verify that BIOS settings, cabling, switch, collected addresses are all OK and WOL actually works for = each of them. Then ... * For each system, I booted the factory GENERIC kernel, run "ifconfig" to s= ee what it shows (WOL_MAGIC was never shown, even an "ifconfig bge0 wol" did n= ot activate it), issued a "shutdown -p now", and tried to wake it from one of = the other hosts. WOL with the factory kernel never woke the bge-based nodes, but always woke the em-based computer (which did always show WOL_MAGIC in ifcon= fig output). Then booted the system again, issued a "cd /usr/src", followed by a "patch < ~/if_bge_patch240113.diff" which always completed successfully. Then "make buildkernel", followed by "make installkernel", and "shutdown -r now". ** I booted the bge-patched GENERIC kernel, run "ifconfig" to see what it shows, issued a "shutdown -p now", and tried to wake it from one of the oth= er hosts. Both bge-based nodes successfully woke when they were "shutdown -p n= ow" from under a bge-patched FreeBSD 13.2, but never woke when they were "shutd= own -p now" from under a bge-patched FreeBSD 14.0. The em-based host always wok= e, regardless of being shut down from under FreeBSD 13.2 or 14.0. The bge-patched 13.2 GENERIC kernel works reliably. I tried multiple times. Also tried doing a "shutdown -r now" after a successful WOL and then doing a "shutdown -p now". Always worked perfectly fine. In none of the cases I experienced that the computer booted up unexpectedly after a "shutdown -p now". So it never behaved like a "shutdown -r". Except when I explicitly run a "shutdown -r". See attached files. Let me know if I can help any further. Hi,
I am intending to participate in this year's GSoC through the project UFS4fuse: support FreeBSD's UFS2 with fusefs (with rust).
Please share inputs with whether it will be possible to take this project up in this year's GSoC and if there are any currently open bugs that I can try solving to get a better idea of the things that lay ahead.

Thanks & Regards,
Divyansh

Hello Divyansh,

UFS is not a network filesystem, so freebsd-fs@ mailing list will be a better place to ask.

'man 8 natd' suggests this for a port-forward: For example, the argument tcp inside1:telnet 6666 means that incoming TCP packets destined for port 6666 on this machine will be sent to the telnet port on the inside1 machine. While this may work for TCP, it does not work well for UDP (evidence is in the PR). With a static alias IP there are two ways to describe such a portforward: (1) ipfw nat 1 config log same_ports unreg_only ip 203.0.113.1 \ redirect_port udp 192.168.1.12:5006 5006 \ redirect_port tcp 192.168.1.12:5006 5006 (2) ipfw nat 1 config log same_ports unreg_only ip 203.0.113.1 \ redirect_port udp 192.168.1.12:5007 203.0.113.1:5006 \ redirect_port tcp 192.168.1.12:5007 203.0.113.1:5006 While there seems no obvious difference between both, there is a difference insofar as (2) appears to work, while (1) does not. The other difference is that (2) obviousely cannot be used with a dynamic alias (parameter 'if' instead of 'ip'), so there exists no working configuration in that case. Therefore I consider this not just a documentation flaw, but a defect. cheerio, PMc From nobody Sat Feb 24 06:39:43 2024 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4ThcgN07Ybz5C8sW for ; Sat, 24 Feb 2024 06:39:44 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4ThcgM5WNcz45DF for ; Sat, 24 Feb 2024 06:39:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1708756783; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=N7A4AtXP0oPrKFT7tfz2ernkCRM3EtLoRUR/MknEiAk8ke68ZXS9mU2YdL3hBae/UCHq9n JafAf0WHhFXMQlE94CqKw13x9Otpgvg3vAP3d73Hd5PmtzRKHii+6X/WVyGyvVLZdeu738 8h5ArWwv5eDserH6nzWBsIBjZLhpkqM6cWJsHpT47dy4Hc+VqBqQ9nmS2FpmRT2SiihK5b JNJ4Ftp9wFCNCoLGN/BQzR+t3ia/W2xjwZyhMQJkoH4Yib+oZogRB2eK6ubJXrNthGJPRC YZ90ejLejuIuTm7VuVuggNhlo96Po2GChhyvA3GZ0NgCFq3alZVq8ZcguGtfsg== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1708756783; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=RZ0Ufd5dV1a8MsgdxG4AgIX8X6lu14eqHHm0hRJiBao=; b=jCz/xySin6ZjPnNwg8ICzoYYgM00MEHeQr3zOgPW2dVEuNcAWEpXLnK0Rf+vfb1wUYtwfv 67ulYMuYWVMW8iiuboOCGbh3Tj/Fs6Auk82ri92TatlVzTpevEueKWPj7RdYs8bPnN/aL2 f0rvFp+26vPz9YeaU3adv7Pd36ap4HgqdUCCyxpYbEQyU4LvuHT+ENfHXf+EkYFQKox01f IORpiXPDmUEBT4Yk/3SG3WrrCAW539eagHQXC3BOxlMm0sx2ryix8qTOCMBq7+tK2/aVzp AFlF7KmYQ5GHjK28pnUG5IuRdl5SNm1Zr8VRcOhVeP5Uwc16JAylR9oDugTBHg== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4ThcgM4T24zpdc for ; Sat, 24 Feb 2024 06:39:43 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 41O6dhwN054250 for ; Sat, 24 Feb 2024 06:39:43 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 41O6dh4s054249 for net@FreeBSD.org; Sat, 24 Feb 2024 06:39:43 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: net@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 275225] On ARM64 carp preempt not working as expected Date: Sat, 24 Feb 2024 06:39:43 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: kern X-Bugzilla-Version: 14.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Some People X-Bugzilla-Who: eimar.koort@tutamail.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: net@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-net List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D275225 --- Comment #3 from ekoort --- As of today it works as expected - ip stays there where it is when 'main' c= omes back up. Even then there are two things we ended up doi= ng in the linux version - 1) We added the drop_batch facility (and optimized i= t) to drop up to 64 packets at a time from the head (all but the last - it hel= ps to always deliver at least the last packet in the queue).=20=20 It was *very* expensive under a packet flood to hit this limit, search the = flow list, then drop a single packet. 2) Also merely dropping the packet without also telling the AQM to drop har= der on its own led to persistent hitting of this spot. So we also incremented t= he codel count variable on this drop in the expectation the AQM would eventual= ly catch up. 3) It is possible to keep extra state around to always track the fattest qu= eue (see fq_codel_fast) and eliminate this non-O(1) search, at the cost of trac= king the fattest queue elsewhere. The expectation is that in normal use, this routine is rarely hit. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sun Feb 25 00:18:25 2024 X-Original-To: freebsd-net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4Tj49654wxz5BtlT for ; Sun, 25 Feb 2024 00:18:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from h2+lists2024@fsfe.org) Received: from mail3.fsfe.org (mail3.fsfe.org [IPv6:2a02:16d0:1004:5a00:f5f3::90]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4Tj49400Ykz4nv0 for ; Sun, 25 Feb 2024 00:18:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from h2+lists2024@fsfe.org) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=fsfe.org header.s=2023072501 header.b=FakwkyCE; dmarc=pass (policy=none) header.from=fsfe.org; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of h2+lists2024@fsfe.org designates 2a02:16d0:1004:5a00:f5f3::90 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=h2+lists2024@fsfe.org Message-ID: <034cc6ea-26d8-4520-879a-672459832407@fsfe.org> DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=fsfe.org; s=2023072501; t=1708820320; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding; bh=U93Yn1Tpr7aBOrRF1FUDXGXztw0MHZjGDJrUqf0x12g=; b=FakwkyCEMOrnB1edk76tnujWN9x+FbJex9JCqWWJqJDkIjN0P8OeH+2+xGXRcP7r+ZIPT/ OqZk0upm8pebC3b5nveQFhXdug0F+A0wIMiQsEiq83VebYs/SNswS/GBrgiubveKDwmWwg nQDBDR7vJOP7SALwvctRGdWm4ktYwCs= Date: Sun, 25 Feb 2024 01:18:25 +0100 List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-net List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-net@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird To: freebsd-net@FreeBSD.org Content-Language: en-US From: Hannes Hauswedell Subject: NFS performance with 10GBase-T Organization: Free Software Foundation Europe Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Spamd-Bar: ------- X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-7.49 / 15.00]; DWL_DNSWL_HI(-3.50)[fsfe.org:dkim]; NEURAL_HAM_MEDIUM(-1.00)[-1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_LONG(-1.00)[-1.000]; NEURAL_HAM_SHORT(-1.00)[-0.996]; DMARC_POLICY_ALLOW(-0.50)[fsfe.org,none]; R_DKIM_ALLOW(-0.20)[fsfe.org:s=2023072501]; R_SPF_ALLOW(-0.20)[+mx]; MIME_GOOD(-0.10)[text/plain]; XM_UA_NO_VERSION(0.01)[]; RCPT_COUNT_ONE(0.00)[1]; ASN(0.00)[asn:49855, ipnet:2a02:16d0::/32, country:DE]; MIME_TRACE(0.00)[0:+]; ARC_NA(0.00)[]; HAS_ORG_HEADER(0.00)[]; MID_RHS_MATCH_FROM(0.00)[]; RCVD_IN_DNSWL_NONE(0.00)[2a02:16d0:1004:5a00:f5f3::90:from]; FROM_EQ_ENVFROM(0.00)[]; FROM_HAS_DN(0.00)[]; RCVD_COUNT_ZERO(0.00)[0]; TO_DN_NONE(0.00)[]; TO_MATCH_ENVRCPT_ALL(0.00)[]; TAGGED_FROM(0.00)[lists2024]; MLMMJ_DEST(0.00)[freebsd-net@FreeBSD.org]; DKIM_TRACE(0.00)[fsfe.org:+] X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4Tj49400Ykz4nv0 Hi everyone, I am coming here from https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=2771971160 TL;DR: * I have a FreeBSD14 Server and Client with an Intel X540 (ix) adaptor each. * I am trying to improve the NFS throughput. * I get 1160 MiB/s via nc, but only ~200 MiB/s via NFS. * Increasing rsize and wsize to 1 MiB increases throughput to 395 MiB/s * But a Linux client achieves 560-600 MiB/s with any rsize. * The mtu is set to 9000 but this doesn't make a difference for the FreeBSD client (it does make a difference for Linux). I assume < 400 MiB/s is not the expected performance? Do you have any advice on debugging this? Just saving my state here on this subtley. Also we use the global queue len= gth not the per queue length to turn off the global dropper, which I have to go looking through here to see if it is correct. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sun Feb 25 02:04:45 2024 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4Tj6Wf3qJPz53tXb for ; I am coming here from
https://bugs.freebsd.= org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D2771971160

T= L;DR:

* I have a FreeBSD14 Server and Clien= t with an Intel X540 (ix) adaptor each.
* I am trying to imp= rove the NFS throughput.
* I get 1160 MiB/s via nc, but only= ~200 MiB/s via NFS.
* Increasing rsize and wsize to 1 MiB i= ncreases throughput to 395 MiB/s
* But a Linux client achiev= es 560-600 MiB/s with any rsize.
* The mtu is set to 9000 bu= t this doesn't make a difference for the FreeBSD client (it does make a diff= erence for Linux).

I assume < 400 MiB/s i= s not the expected performance? Do you have any advice on debugging this?

Thank you for your help,
Hann= es

Hi Hannes,
  The link didn=E2=80=99t work . Can you tell us more about the file= system , what type of disks . Details about the server , hardware details. &= nbsp;If you want post a copy of your dmesg to https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/index.cgi that can= help too .

Also what kinds of clients are you usin= g ?

Do you have any relevant network stats or a top= ology/ diagram of the shape of things ?

Sorry, no clue how that copy-pasta happened. The link Michael posted is correct: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=277197 > Can you tell us more about the file system , > what type of disks . 4x4TiB NVME (Lexar NM790) raidz1 The server can maintain speeds over 900 MiB/s copying hundreds of Gigabytes from one dataset to another including compression and encryption on both ends, so I don't think the server setup is a problem. nc manages to send data at 1100 MiB/s from the server to the client. > Details about the server , hardware details.  If > you want post a copy of your dmesg to > https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/index.cgi >  that can help too . https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/index.cgi?do=view&id=7527 If there is anything else that would help, please let me know! > Also what kinds of clients are you using ? The FreeBSD14 client is an amd64 machine with the same network adaptor as the server (Intel X540 T1). I have set up a dual-boot with Devuan GNU/Linux. As reported above, Linux achieves 600 MiB/s out of the box. > Do you have any relevant network stats or a topology/ diagram of the > shape of things ? The client and server are connected via CAT7 cables and a NETGEAR switch. I could look up the model later, but it can probably be ruled out if other tools/OS achieve higher throughput? However, Linux performs much better with 9K jumbo frames whereas FreeBSD performance does not improve for 9K jumbo frames. (Some mount options I suggested did help somewhat for FreeBSD. Basically increasing rsize/wsize did help, but he still sees performance below what Linux gets when 9K jumbo frames are used. (I did note the potential problem of mbuf cluster pool fragmentation when 9K jumbo frames are used, although I did not intent to imply that this issue is involved, just that it is a known deficiency that "might" be a factor.) rick > > Best regards > Michael > > > > TL;DR: > > > > * I have a FreeBSD14 Server and Client with an Intel X540 (ix) adaptor = each. > > * I am trying to improve the NFS throughput. > > * I get 1160 MiB/s via nc, but only ~200 MiB/s via NFS. > > * Increasing rsize and wsize to 1 MiB increases throughput to 395 MiB/s > > * But a Linux client achieves 560-600 MiB/s with any rsize. > > * The mtu is set to 9000 but this doesn't make a difference for the Fre= eBSD client (it does make a difference for Linux). > > > > I assume < 400 MiB/s is not the expected performance?
