It looks to me like IPv6 bits in FreeBSD are not widely tested and seem to be neglected. In some places, they remain as they were initially imported from KAME.  Some time ago kaktus@ fixed logging for unforwarded packets [1] [2]. Recently glebius@ fixed ICMP6 error rate limiting, but there is still open PR 245103[3] and other bugs. It's appreciated by the community that Netflix uses IPv6 and their programmers are working on the improvements. So please let me ask here for the MFC of the few commits to the stable/14 branch. I have done the MFC in my local repo and while testing the stable/14 built from it on the bunch of hosts, I found the set complete, applicable, and most likely not breaking KBI. The only problem I spotted was the too-low default value of net.inet6.icmp6.errppslimit[4]. Fortunately, it's tunable, so bumping it to 200 fixed the error flooding for Nextcloud hosts. I see it's already made it's way into ports, but it's worth mentioning regardless. But for the port itself and how it integrates into FreeBSD please be aware that dhcpcd-11 (not released yet) will be the first where you cannot have a process per interface/family. Instead there will be a single process which covers everything. This will reduce the code base, the complexity of how things hang together, remove the need for a network proxy process and solve some unsolvable problems that have surfaced over the years with the current structure. How does this affect distributions using dhcpcd? Well, if use another framework (such as FreeBSD's rc) to control DHCP per interface you still can, but you need to start dhcpcd first with all interfaces disabled. You can do this in /etc/dhcpcd.conf or on the command line. Once done, `dhcpcd $interface` works as before to activate the interface. You can currently do this now with any dhcpcd-10 version as well. Just worth mentioning I think as FreeBSD are now looking at integrating. Host networking uses a VF on port 2 3. Start a bhyve VM with one of the VFs on port 1 as a passthrough device I've used nvmupdate to update to the most recent firmware as of 2024-06-07.
