Have you tried with a > newer version? Quite a few changes to ZFS have happened since then, > including the switch to OpenZFS. Regarding FreeBSD versions, please re-read my post (above). Regarding FreeBSD ZFS changes, I am reminded of the recent OpenZFS data destruction bug. And, I recall issues when I evaluated FreeBSD 13/ OpenZFS in the past. I am not inclined to trust my data to OpenZFS unless and until I see improvements in their processes, validation of their processes and code by reputable entities, and no defects discovered for "long enough". This means FreeBSD 13 is not an option for me at this time. But the major problem is that FreeBSD EoL'd 12.4R today: https://www.freebsd.org/security/#sup I am screwed. I agree that replacing my FreeBSD 12.4R ZFS OS disks with FreeBSD 13.2R UFS OS disks should prevent OpenZFS bugs from affecting the OS. While I like ZFS-on-root, I could live with UFS. But, I very much want my data on ZFS. The problem is that the recent FreeBSD 13/ OpenZFS 2 bugs tell me that they are not as stable as I would like. Is it possible to use Illumos ZFS on FreeBSD 13? I have a little problem. I have successfully updated to 14.0-RELEASE,
but the root shell is still /bin/csh. I want to use /bin/sh as it is
now the one that should be the default.

is also very helpful.

Gruß

I=E2=80=99m = happy to be pointed to existing answers if they exist, though. Basically, my question is if it=E2=80=99s possible to use something like = /usr/local/etc/rc.conf to configure stuff like services that should = start on system boot, rather than putting that stuff in = /etc/rc.conf.local (or /etc/rc.conf, for that matter). And the context = of my question is that lately I=E2=80=99ve been looking for ways to = simplify my jail management as I move through several of them for = multiple reasons (major userland upgrades, major application upgrades, = etc.), and one thing I find myself doing more-and-more is extracting all = sorts of configuration to mounts, with /urs/local/etc being one of them = (and turning the jails themselves more-and-more into disposable units). So, if I have a configs directory mounted onto jail A=E2=80=99s = /usr/local/etc, and at some point I want to upgrade that jail to its = successor jail B, moving that same mount to the latter=E2=80=99s = /usr/local/etc makes upgrading a breeze. The only problem I have is that = this process fails to capture the configurations made in rc.conf(5). The best technique I=E2=80=99ve come up with so far to remediate this = problem is indeed creating a /usr/local/etc/rc.conf file, which I = configure to my liking, and then symlink=E2=80=99ing /etc/rc.conf.local = to it. But, other than having to remember to create the symlink in the = new jail, I keep thinking that there must be a better way that=E2=80=99d = keep my local configurations fully out of /etc. So, is there a reason why rc(8) supporting (or me =E2=80=9Cforcing=E2=80=9D= it to support via my symlink) a /usr/local/etc/rc.conf file would be a = bad idea? Or would this be a worthy enhancement to rc(8)? Thank you for pointing out that entry in the rc.conf(5) man page! I = guess I either didn=E2=80=99t pay too much attention to it at first, = and/or I was thrown off either by the meaning of =E2=80=9C(dir)=E2=80=9D = in that paragraph, which I can only assume maps to /usr/local/etc (but I = still haven=E2=80=99t tested to confirm that), or by the fact that you = can only use =E2=80=9C(name)=E2=80=9D configuration files inside = rc.conf.d within =E2=80=9C(dir)=E2=80=9D, rather than just a plain = rc.conf file within =E2=80=9C(dir)=E2=80=9D. I guess I either didn’t pay too much attention to it at first, and/or I was thrown off either by the meaning of “(dir)” in that paragraph, which I can only assume maps to /usr/local/etc (but I still haven’t tested to confirm that), or by the fact that you can only use “(name)” configuration files inside rc.conf.d within “(dir)”, rather than just a plain rc.conf file within “(dir)”. > > So, if I’m I’m understanding correctly, that’d mean that I can have configuration files (*NOT* script files, which would go inside “(dir)”/rc.d) such as: > > /usr/local/etc/rc.conf.d/apache24 > /usr/local/etc/rc.conf.d/php-fpm Sure. > but not a single one named: > > /usr/local/etc/rc.conf Um, if you'd read to the end of that paragraph, you'd have found rc_conf_files which lists individual files to include. These are just files of shell commands that are included by the startup scripts. Take a look at /etc/defaults/rc.conf (described in the third paragraph of that same man page) and see what it does.
