My goal is irrelevant. I'm writing only to ask if there is a good way to download a specific list's archives for indexing/reading using my local mail tools. I'm finding the web UI tedious. I'd prefer the archives either in mbox or maildir format. It seems this is not available for any mailing list at any time. I was able to find a subset of archives available to download from https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/ but they are in plain text format. This is fine as a last resort, but not ideal. Thanks for any help, Panos -- Panayotis Manganaris, M.Sc. I do not read encrypted mail. Contact ptm.22 on Signal secure messenger. What do you think about this? I can also add you as maintainer to the port if you like. If you need then an update, just create a patch, create a ticket in bugzilla and give me a ping or the mailing list. [snip] > Panos Hello, I use mutt, so I use maildir format. I will describe how I proceed. For instance hereunder step-by-step my process for the list freebsd-fortran 1. Create a local directory mkdir /home/me/fbsd_fortran 2. Go to this directory cd /home/me/fbsd_fortran 3. Go to the page: https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/ 4. Search for the list "fortran-freebsd" then copy its URL https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-fortran/ 5. Create a file containing all the gziped archives ready to be downloaded curl https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-fortran/ | \ grep '\.txt\.gz' | \ cut -d\" -f2 | \ awk '{print "curl -4L https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-fortran= /"$1" -O"}' > arch_gzip.txt 6. If all goes well, execute this file sh ./ arch_gzip.txt 7. Ungzip archives for curs in *.gz; do gunzip $curs; done 8. Create a directory which will contain the maildir structure mkdir fbsd_fortran_ml 9. Install the tool "mb2md" pkg install mb2md 10. It failed to boot with 13.4. Stuck at the loader prompt. Can't find the kernel. But the kernel is there, I see it if I 'ls /boot/kernel/'. Loader just doesn't like it, it seems. I've typed off the msg: Loading kernel... Failed to load kernel 'kernel' can't load 'kernel' can't load 'kernel' Type '?' for a list[...] OK [prompt waiting for input] Furthermore, the loader dialog frame has "Loader needs to be updated" on its bottom border. What's that about? It also shows this if I boot the 13.4-boot-only ISO. This is a custom build, custom kernel, custom world. Does not use EFI. Updating gptzfsboot stored in the boot partition on the local HDD did not help. I suspect there's something wrong with the kernel, or something wrong with loader. How would I investigate this? Any ideas how to get more info out of it? I can repro this in VirtualBox with the 13.4-image I built for the upgrade, so testing is easy. PPD may be found in one of the default bundles in system packages or a vendor driver. See Administration / Add Printer. If its a network printer use "socket://", then select model from the list or add you own PPD. At the end Print Test Page to make sure things work as expected (Printers / / Maintenance / Print Test Page). If that does not work from a selected printer choose Administration / Modify Printer and update configuration until it works. You may also Administration / Set Default Options like Dupex etc. http://localhost:631/ For instance I use PPD for my Xerox Laser from Windows95 drivers and it works on a networked printer with duplex, but some PPD have references to system specific libraries and are not portable, in that case you need to find similar printer. I also have color Canon Laser networked printer with duplex and it works with a system packages PPD file chosen from a list of similar model. Hello and thanks,

ippprint says ipp://hostname:60000/ipp/print as connection

lpstat -t    ipp://localhost:60000/ipp/print or with ipp://hostname:60000/ipp/print

The command "lpinfo -v" never shows a connection ipp printer!!!

the printer is HP ENVY 5540, I tested the following connections:
ipp://localhost:60000/ipp/print
ipp://hostname:631/printers/printername
ipp://hostname:631/ipp/print
ipp://hostname:60000/ipp/print

TESTPAGE:
processing since

"The printer is in use."

or I get message the printer cannot be located.

and the error_log:

This is a feature, not a bug. By default, UFS only uses 90% odd of available disk space. The remainder is available only to root. You can change this value by using the tunefs -m, which specifies how much to leave free. See the man page for mroe detail. Greg -- When replying to this message, please copy the original recipients. The curious > thing is that it shows -29G: That should have likely only happened if transferring it as root or if limits were adjusted after the transfer. Unless you had an error during the transfer, you should expect it went through all the way. You will need to delete data if you need. > # df -kh /mnt/backups/ > Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on > /dev/da0p4 652G 629G -29G 105% /mnt > > How is this possible? I presume this is with UFS though people also use other choices like exfat, ntfs, and even ZFS on external drives. Knowing the filesystem could help know what properties it has. Filesystems usually have reserved free space. Performing activities as root will normally allow you to exceed the normal reserve but even then its common that a little bit of room is kept for some of its own housekeeping. Filesystems like ZFS also require having available space to write to when a delete is to take place; if ZFS becomes full, it could become difficult to impossible to get it unstuck unless the pool can be grown (larger partition/disk). Even root is supposed to not be allowed to use such final amounts of free space. Following OpenZFS bug reports shows users do still sometimes reach such a condition and if it occurs then detailed bug reports are important. Separately, ZFS in particular can lead you down unexpected results if using external tools that are not ZFS aware like df; they make assumptions that are not true on ZFS like the size of the partition not changing. > I will later re-calculate the MD5 hash of the last tar archive guru-20240920.tar.gz > and compare it with what is stored in guru-20240920.tar.gz.md5 If using md5 as a verification against corruption, gzip also contains crc32 checksum though a second check with a second algorithm can further limit a chance of different data having the same hash. If it is to identify tampering then there are other more secure algorithms you might consider in place of md5 or use public/private key signing. If you have the source, you can try comparing the source and destination size with `ls -l` and without the -h parameter to get a more precise byte count. You could also use a tool like jdupes to compare source vs destination byte for byte. Some separate considerations to make backups and restores faster and using less resources: Unless you need compatibility with older systems that have limited archive format support, you could consider using compressors that can make smaller archives more quickly. With gzip you may be CPU bottlenecked for writing the compressed archive. During a copy your USB drives are either limited by the drive speed or USB speed for writing and reading; any additional compression ratio = data moves to and from the drives faster. Using zstd will usually allow you to compress data smaller while using less CPU and extracting should run much faster. If these archives are created and copied regularly to store mostly the same data with just incremental changes, you could evaluate if other archival tools that support incremental archiving are better suited like zpaqfranz. Such tools can help only store+transfer what has changed, store multiple revisions without taking the full space for each copy and deduplicate data in case of multiple copies of the same file end up in it. If using ZFS for the original and backup, you could use zfs replication which has several differences. You can perform incremental transfers and only changed blocks within the filesystem will be read and transferred. ZFS compressed files can be transferred without decompressing/recompressing or you can do so to make them smaller on the destination; Restoring will then have less data to read from disk so it restores faster and again can be transferred with or without recompressing so your source disk can get the additional space savings. Higher compression likely requires a bit more RAM when files are read but on the other hand ZFS ARC (=RAM cache) will hold the compressed version of the files so your cache can hold more file data. ZFS with zstd compression benefits from one thread per block allowing muntithreaded decompression which zstd otherwise doesn't have yet for the standalone program. If you received it to a ZFS pool instead of storing the replication stream into a file, you will have quick access to any file in the backup without having to decompress/extract anything more than what you need. Unfortunately compressing each ZFS record (usually 128k) separately usually performs worse than compressing the files as a whole using a comparable compressor and archiving multiple (preferably similar) files gives even better results. > Thanks > > matthias > From nobody Sat Oct 26 19:57:27 2024 X-Original-To: questions@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XbVms0BgKz5b7Mg for ; I want to connect a HP48 pocket calculator an Raspi serially via RS232. Raspi's running FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE. Serial lines: RX,TX,Shield,GND (no CTS nor RTS) Finally I'll use Kermit but while here are issues, I first aim for serial running. That is: echo -n "S" > /dev/cuau0 # sending and: cat /dev/cuau0 # receiving ("S" =3D #53h =3D #01010011b) Watching on oscilloscope: Send signals can be observed from Raspi and Hp48. Config: edit: /etc/ttys Commented out all 'ttyuN' lines (0-3) cause that gave me access to 'cuau0' and disposed console butting in. Well: stty -a -f /dev/cuau0 speed 115200 baud; 0 rows; 0 columns; stty -f /dev/cuau0 speed 9600 115200 stty -a -f /dev/cuau0 speed 9600 baud; 0 rows; 0 columns; seems to work, however: echo -n "S" > /dev/cuau0 # sending from Raspi sends 8.62_=C2=B5s a bit. That is 115200_baud. sending from HP48: sends 104.80_=C2=B5s a bit. That's 9600_baud. cat /dev/cuau0 # doesn't receive anything, ofcause So: How to set the serial line's speed. (manually, after boot) Thanks in advance, Holger --Sig_/zSJt7opnb=wvz32wZPusAEa Content-Type: application/pgp-signature Content-Description: OpenPGP digital signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQEzBAEBCgAdFiEEVepK+aSRI0hJ0Y9qfWl2gZrbC3gFAmceks0ACgkQfWl2gZrb C3h/qAf/Vjh2EOZza6kSHKSpjNYZF6TwmbDVpyxduel14KTPhqHKU9Lp3WExNbFA v6E9gEOeJnnpUXguPH7Xl1p5pXGBnGL0q8DTNX7rozOmZ81oC2nfmm8Bag36sMk5 FA7v81qr01NIE9oLaVMfh/65cR7bDQYEGBAcIVdbqj1iDytDz0sfO7OA/tkhjQDJ KOA6eNGsIvgWxYD8wRLZKyGazCPWKKyE2EH86429np+bxIaT0eLFWGOn9k6pxegJ ntUQAnHEHYRH/hYtA+1XdXPXYpsobpjIPN3OrN1QplIUdGx0yTlbqNx15wYTa4PA dMqGwIv1Hs27Prz75MQXXwcasjceGQ== =a4Z/ -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Sig_/zSJt7opnb=wvz32wZPusAEa--
