The reason for this was that lld was using way= too many threads on many-core machines: nowadays just creating "hw.ncpu" thread= s is no longer a good default. That said, now that lld also has a limiter in place, we might want to drop = this patch, which is not really in the right spot, e.g. the general llvm support library in contrib/llvm-project/llvm/lib/Support/Threading.cpp. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Mon Oct 7 09:00:58 2024 X-Original-To: toolchain@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XMY6318XYz5XYv5 for ; Mon, 07 Oct 2024 09:00:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R11" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4XMY6304B5z41Z8 for ; Mon, 7 Oct 2024 09:00:59 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1728291659; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=kFlPIJlE/kSwm8S5fwKtL0Ec227/G3Y1Cd+HGhK4IVE=; b=oDJm/wGx/slJNomu5l7pAQpOLvikRemy0wfRoGU2icn8uc5ptKZ8tLs+e45VfyYK+nTpEk UZuGbDegsrNiiKq7fjfzgrQE3IRxD8Y+uklpoCqct5nEQjPtUWmRQY5L/gTZTB5BFq3V5o KTs9dvbnB2r4SLHV7dWBX7Cv6xJk3VBc5rDPdcjUAEPYeyyQOnWHpdH4r3noJo+lDnYqrS FPBfIQPU3Ei02HH/AGEAd5oPGVG/oP0klKewWc02KVhQJ/50tYna6kz+FiN9MbEifVMYkY b5xNX91nj6QtBgAqEBZd2U/O/6M6B+Bfj8RXrllLQK3B3ow0IAFARnr0v6nizA== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1728291659; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=TE0khBofb6Jrq6JulLe9ys0AILrOArx3ZfJQn7mMgfJ0hJqiuOw8ckA6ZBP8xc73zHppo0 UId51cxdDS+NNP+RTTZOkC8rPxBHX3MQJiH8P7KWuPrtLYjtxhO9Fa4sHp+ewtuJ5NHxXP F2o9oabTE0Rfxz8Uuv7wwbLaaH4lIlbtWauW0q6WNSRq+/dEQqwLlKZqenYqSQPhvV0MYv IrJi25+6YaNAEgXMbAo2hfSMytiRjongHTbLK5nz6gauOXKSjTlGi6JqWf6uZzdRqI4Aob Bh3zVKX/Yflqu1oKHhNP6cHcMvkWztKqjvBy2SXuvq/NToBL+TrkMzAtlmP/YA== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4XMY626ggMzg7g for ; Mon, 7 Oct 2024 09:00:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 49790wpd073294 for ; Mon, 7 Oct 2024 09:00:58 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 49790wh3073293 for toolchain@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 7 Oct 2024 09:00:58 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 281765] llvm - ThinLTO never uses more than a single thread by default Date: Mon, 07 Oct 2024 09:00:58 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 14.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: theraven@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: cc Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Maintenance of FreeBSD s integrated toolchain List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-toolchain List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-BeenThere: freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-toolchain@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D281765 David Chisnall changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |theraven@FreeBSD.org --- Comment #3 from David Chisnall --- (In reply to Dimitry Andric from comment #2) > The reason for this was that lld was using way too many threads on many-c= ore machines: nowadays just creating "hw.ncpu" threads is no longer a good = default. The documentation does not appear to be kept up to date in this area. If one looks at the analogous code for various recent tags: same point. For example, 19.1.1 and 20-init : https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/llvmorg-19.1.1/lld/ELF/Driver.cpp= #L1656-L1679 https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/llvmorg-20-init/lld/ELF/Driver.cp= p#L1647-L1670 They do not match: https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ThinLTO.html Comparison to llvm upstream needs to be based on the upstream code, not the out of date documentation. (For things are they are currently, anyway.) --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sat Oct 12 11:44:36 2024 X-Original-To: toolchain@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4XQhVY3thjz5ZG55 for ; Sat, 12 Oct 2024 11:44:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R11" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4XQhVY2pdqz4ccC for ; Sat, 12 Oct 2024 11:44:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1728733477; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=18f1CSTAq9+BrI+4NtgB5mrT4coEQCeT0TFueWXQzUU=; b=HWKOFZlJR6KQCuLJLKrohkOws0RD+soMPe+JqazcV3+ClfsnKV3PJyBEdeI0vuAoUPYsav 0Ygh8LmfDbqUr9HR0n2On050NOCNm71uNillVHqCXp9WvCnmhh9T0l6daac24nPHyO1EHp HGdy1QCnJlvdhBgCNw5DLhi48Y/fFN1xK7pzf9p8yLtNAnlSb3mdJA2pgUvvG4WfAPIdUo NLxvrX7Lpi9DrMK23lwEsrqQnREjMdRwrSj3cgq83vG6SwACVtRNft/5jmwsULsFa2bsdT CwqhJH5xxrvoFWBs5tGKZVnxTqZpdhQGLmcOptrZpbBoLZn7VqDJLn1U0p7nfA== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1728733477; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=tlFNGRaP06dSZHbK5DjNAzBhzoA/xdtS2NCwLq4PglRU0D5mhisd6+D4fFdVQdHWrO3e10 vKPTjvv84O79eQM8Y1l7lYsF4lUbgNmpsFQjHVsoTjQjFgCmNTTLukKHCYi6rFpa7Q2g1P 4otyIRMkQ7E9Qsw//7fRswUfQxjS8na1bemBnmx2QUV2hmIRMgobfFNwY2A85F5q4pE7m2 rWXWdTK5kUTWOZkEIjSrsqpBzH+RXha7xsDhMBzz9sO+W/+z7onPcOpmECiakXjYKd0VjR KrXSaZPodeeCcCEXQqAvZ8SV2HbrWzLyun8ANx0Puk4ljPdUnVzVDCGCEF47cQ== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4XQhVY2HQdz1Nbc for ; Sat, 12 Oct 2024 11:44:37 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 49CBibLN073138 for ; Sat, 12 Oct 2024 11:44:37 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 49CBibJ1073137 for toolchain@FreeBSD.org; Sat, 12 Oct 2024 11:44:37 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 281765] llvm - ThinLTO never uses more than a single thread by default Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2024 11:44:36 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bin X-Bugzilla-Version: 14.1-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: dim@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: toolchain@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Maintenance of FreeBSD s integrated toolchain List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-toolchain List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-BeenThere: freebsd-toolchain@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-toolchain@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D281765 --- Comment #8 from Dimitry Andric --- (In reply to Mark Millard from comment #7) My guess is that https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/commit/a8788de1c3f3c8c3a591bd3aae2acee= 1b43b229a ("[ELF] Cap parallel::strategy to 16 threads when --threads=3D is unspecifi= ed") is enough to restrain lld's grabbing of threads, at least in most situation= s, and we can probably revert https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/commit/?id=3D04bab189b8a54974fcd9530140e4eed6a= d137f48 ("llvm/lld: damage control threading") now. Process size limitations count here. In my view 32-bit contexts should likely single thread the linker.
