I think that is a great endeavour but it got me thinking that perhaps there's an alternative way to leverage the full power of FBSD and Bastille. If you look at Dockerfile, they mostly follow the same pattern: 1 - package manager installs 2 - system commands 3 - package, inheritance 4 - repeat 5 - launch entrypoint The package manager AFAICT are only 3: alpine, debian, red hat The commands are almost translatable 1:1 to Bastille So my question is, has anybody thought or have started work on an Dockerfile interpreter that can build native Bastille/ZFS "images" from a Dockerfile ? I think most of the work would be creating and maintaining the package names and their equivs which for the most part will be very similar to FBSD ports. Any thoughts? I see these two processes enabled...but I don't know how to use FreeBSD... # ps ax 2606 ? Ssl 0:00 xl -vvvv create freebsd.cfg 2607 pts/0 Sl+ 0:00 /usr/lib/xen-4.17/bin/xenconsole 1 --num 0 --type pv now the fun begins...because,based on what say the xen developers : ... the ps output, it seems that ``xl create`` completed and you have the console open. So the freeze you mention is just because your FreeBSD guest is not outputting anything. As mentioned earlier, I don't think a lot of testing has been done for 32-bit Arm FreeBSD. So it is quite possible that there are some pieces of code missing. The first step is to check if the FreeBSD kernel was built with Xen options. If they are, then you will need to find out where FreeBSD is stuck (or why the console is not enabled). Unfortunately, we don't have any support to use GDB on the guest kernel. So you will have to modify FreeBSD a bit to check where it freezes. Assuming you have a debug build of the hypervisor, then you can sprinkle the FreeBSD boot code with the assembly instruction 'hvc 0xfffc'. When this is reached, this will issue an hypercall that will print on the Xen console that the given instruction has reached (the PC will be printed). There are other useful 'hvc' calls implemented by Xen for low level debugging. You can look at do_debug_trap() in Xen code. I've added this to GENERIC kernel of FreeBSD guest : # Xen HVM Guest Optimizations # NOTE: XENHVM depends on xenpci. They must be added or removed together. options XENHVM # Xen HVM kernel infrastructure device xenpci # Xen HVM Hypervisor services driver Unfortunately,it is not accepted : unknown option "XENHVM" I've found these parameters ONLY on the file /usr/src/sys/conf/files.amd64 : x86/xen/pv.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/pvcpu_enum.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/xen_pci_bus.c optional xenhvm Look at the prefix x86. It is not for arm. It seems there is a piece of code that hasn't been written. Is there a chance to add it ? Does anyone want to help ? No arch/arm64 does not contain Xen in KERNCONF either. Surprisingly files.x86 invokes a different set of files. I don't know what build it is. x86/xen/hvm.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/xen_intr.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/xen_apic.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/xenpv.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/xen_msi.c optional xenhvm x86/xen/xen_nexus.c optional xenhvm -- Mario. --0000000000000a58cd060eac75c0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

FROZEN.

I see these two processes enabled...but I don't know how to use FreeBSD= ...

=09 =09
# ps ax
2606 ?        Ssl    0:00 xl -vvvv create freebsd.cfg
2607 pts/0    Sl+    0:00 /usr/lib/xen-4.17/bin/xenconsole 1 --num 0 --type=
 pv

now the fun begins...because,based on what say the xen developers :

=09
=09
... the ps output, it seems that ``xl create`` completed and you have the console open. So the freeze you mention is just because your=20 FreeBSD guest is not outputting anything. As mentioned earlier, I don't= =20 think a lot of testing has been done for 32-bit Arm FreeBSD. So it is=20 quite possible that there are some pieces of code missing. The first=20 step is to check if the FreeBSD kernel was built with Xen=20 options. If they are, then you will need to find out where FreeBSD is=20 stuck (or why the console is not enabled). Unfortunately, we don't have= =20 any support to use GDB on the guest kernel. So you will have to modify=20 FreeBSD a bit to check where it freezes. Assuming you have a debug=20 build of the hypervisor, then you can sprinkle the FreeBSD boot code=20 with the assembly instruction 'hvc 0xfffc'. When this is reached, t= his=20 will issue an hypercall that will print on the Xen console that the given= =20 instruction has reached (the PC will be printed). There are other useful=20 'hvc' calls implemented by Xen for low level debugging. You can loo= k at=20 do_debug_trap() in Xen code.
=09

I've added this to GENERIC kernel of FreeBS= D guest :

=09 =09
# Xen HVM Guest Optimizations

# NOTE: XENHVM depends on xenpci. They must be added or removed togeth= er.
options XENHVM # Xen HVM kernel infrastructure device xenpci # Xen HVM Hypervisor services driver

<= /code>
Unfortunately,it is not accepted :

unknown option "XENHVM"

I've found these parameters ONLY on the file
/usr/src/sys/conf/files.amd64 :

<= /code>
x86/xen/pv.c            optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/pvcpu_enum.c    optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/xen_pci_bus.c   optional    xenhvm

Look at the prefix x86. It is not for arm. It seems there is a piece of code that hasn't been written. Is there a chance t= o add it ? Does anyone want to help ?

No arch/arm64= does not contain Xen in KERNCONF either.

Surprisingly files.x86 invokes a diff= erent set of files. I don't know what build it is.

=09 =09
x86/xen/hvm.c            optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/xen_intr.c       optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/xen_apic.c       optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/xenpv.c          optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/xen_msi.c        optional    xenhvm
x86/xen/xen_nexus.c      optional    xenhvm

Hello world :-)

Aftere recent 13.2-RELEASE freebsd-update and pkg bhyve stopped
working. It starts a machine that stops right after start. I am using
vm-bhyve (1.5.0) frontend and enabling debug=3D"yes" does not rea= lly
reveal anything more except error code and its cause.

Does anyone know what can be the problem and solution here? :-)

Any hints appreciated :-)

Is there any way to make bhyve+vnc experience less painful? I also use vnc (remmina) for remote mac connections (i.e. 1G LAN) and it looks the same but there is no feeling of "local machine". I have tried different vnc clients and configurations but it just works awful the ssh+tmux is the best in that case o_O -- CeDeROM, SQ7MHZ, http://www.tomek.cedro.info From nobody Sun Jan 14 11:21:57 2024 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4TCXsy5GYVz57h5d for ; Sun, 14 Jan 2024 11:21:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R3" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4TCXsy4DgHz4tFs for ; Sun, 14 Jan 2024 11:21:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1705231318; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=6wJGqKKq/tGQZFUw5wvk/ims8Xbdgtptb0XLTDee/64=; b=YewFJsvglxCWDRqzjrG/vMMM8ix48HAcC5Xn+ZpldptzI1E2VbgoG5PkX1/WQnWsK5E8Mh A4jSsAgkWD6ZqILdDi2HW52gXT6tdOun/5fRA3SdW3BmvrX0tWmYQ/LbzUOxPT6atXSM3n 698cN742vrHYbqEgtxx/XzZxun0WhIHAz14mjrMoJk70g+Cfea0kTmxB8N92ZdVRJaN3gh I5gHXfaUxZOAtm80UdhZD59nzmAih5LFNNnZo8tEm7RV1XmF4DDvQWii4qbdnrODnLS97Q 0HSwr2JAtpFLHMh4f3qeA9bb/h0npEnJcgZB/bSU5HVfPcssvB1ZcxTVmqctpg== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1705231318; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=B7VJ4CfZFuW3dYH1ooiks0hH2iTvb7oHRygDes9CDd5C2V5F8QesfpS+OfBadq/bKm5jID LwNTqG+ZiISdZjZ5sBpPN/FSUQ/F3EAcDhDeBrdjj7Eglj/ny9LqoJbmaYs9L6nT74q17L 65jwUVIUN8OWuaI29s2kEc1rOtRTsZ2tQsd7e7CgocmSPg1qQl2nhuZQTV/rhac0pVvTOh C4JKUey/MrZw74KyvzwpIsqXDmnLP3lUWWkogq6jq1hgcTjMSdMD0qMPWyYOfyVDnE//N0 GeSijQ9kyjTUJ1rJE1nqU9tMaKjLK/81mVbH5UW9UN2ixx9fgKow4ynidUdODQ== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4TCXsy3Hq8z1BK7 for ; Sun, 14 Jan 2024 11:21:58 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 40EBLwvT056064 for ; Sun, 14 Jan 2024 11:21:58 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from bugzilla@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 40EBLwg4055906 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Sun, 14 Jan 2024 11:21:58 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: bugzilla set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 275760] bhyve: xhci not working on linux guests Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2024 11:21:57 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: AssignedTo X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Base System X-Bugzilla-Component: bhyve X-Bugzilla-Version: 14.0-RELEASE X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: commit-hook@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: X-Bugzilla-Changed-Fields: Message-ID: In-Reply-To: References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-Bugzilla-URL: https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/ Auto-Submitted: auto-generated List-Id: Discussion List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-virtualization List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org X-BeenThere: freebsd-virtualization@freebsd.org MIME-Version: 1.0 https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=3D275760 --- Comment #8 from commit-hook@FreeBSD.org --- A commit in branch main references this bug: URL: https://cgit.FreeBSD.org/src/commit/?id=3D0c243cd4a3671bf728f33378ac593c08d= 8367bc2 commit 0c243cd4a3671bf728f33378ac593c08d8367bc2 Author: Peter Grehan AuthorDate: 2024-01-14 11:27:12 +0000 Commit: Peter Grehan CommitDate: 2024-01-14 11:38:55 +0000 Fix issue with Linux guest XHCI tablet probing. The USB3 spec mandates that the device-descriptor max packet size be 512 bytes, which requires a field size of 9 since it is a power-of-2. Linux kernels recently started validating this field, resulting in the table not being probed and the cursor not working in bhyve VNC.
