When adding it to at least one device, bhyve creates a bootorder and passes it over the Qemu FwCfg interface to the guest. The guest firmware has to pick up the FwCfg file and has to apply the bootorder. Otherwise, the bootindex property won't have any effect. Recently, a commit was merged by EDKII to support that feature and we can simply cherry-pick it. PR: 279720 Reviewed by: manu Approved by: manu Sponsored by: Beckhoff Automation GmbH & Co. And then,I will recompile= it doing make / make install. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Mon Jul 1 14:38:11 2024 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4WCTDM41W8z5Nx36 for ; Mon, 01 Jul 2024 14:38:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R11" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4WCTDM1rwRz3yj8 for ; Mon, 1 Jul 2024 14:38:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1719844691; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=pfSWoFK/xTQc6FA5gvupPRLfZzeLzRF7Pe7eSZftwQa3zK3gkESXv/qRTdv86q2WZXSE9F +Am22xxNw/Rs8R5CusyuX5PDqAaBn/kRKHMzXWezOjZEcGKDMpd/wQx37oeZVYuIz5lT2C zo1Bu+jA7Jrxt7fOwKeB4H9p5yj/JW/SNZTHRI8T7HSSDMpjHNooiQlATqFMkk1AnAf4P2 djFC4B56AE3jFfm4HJW4Ic6BzG+3x2AiQMm+LjunJVKtjr/nDLRKzUY1i3xlsLsWwT8HvT JAdDuMMM5W33gf7xdRYeByYQZHMWQ2U2mk7QvFe3afR1R6NQ4dTa+eFuf5+gKQ== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1719844691; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=V1782mrCX+IMgRDKeq2DJ+Bso5F0Ao2q3FZSxKpfGrI=; b=eyta+FTRLpCPA8YM9JWu+rGAY6GmHj+b0NjmZUwr6qCe5OmgHEbdD4bsA5RajGvpbakYCg ywz2L0Gys66PPRoT1p02PCWnMNOJ0aScqGN7AIWpmQoTCkKGGCTX9SegelMJ1yujnMfdm9 +7d34RwIA6pF7yvp2NKsdeQI34h5byAZMvi8lXu0uzjCHRXoksO2y9v6ng7e6r1rrYFMWt mJWsr+viboqjFZ69VnCk/+7LH6RmdkHgSVlb53PQj4DGk5oIyOiXmKK7hd0rq9b1abpIeh Vhzk9iOtYPNwsxm5KSb8jITsbpeJYnD7XmFb0V5sORJeE7mYPIRNl842h0wYJw== Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4WCTDM1L9bz17pX for ; Mon, 1 Jul 2024 14:38:11 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 461EcBH4043522 for ; Mon, 1 Jul 2024 14:38:11 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 461EcBuJ043521 for virtualization@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 1 Jul 2024 14:38:11 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 279720] virtualization/bhyve: it does not boot from the slot where the parameter bootindex=1 is declared. [root@marietto /bh= yve]=3D=3D> ps ax | grep bhyve
6645 =C2=A04 =C2=A0RL+ =C2=A0 =C2=A0 0= :00,00 grep bhyve (ggrep)

and yes,the vmm module i= s loaded in memory :

root@marietto /bhyve]=3D=3D&g= t; kldstat | grep vmm
13 =C2=A0 =C2=A01 0xffffffff827ac000 =C2=A0 37c9e8= vmm.ko

how has it been loaded inside the memory ? Usin= g /boot/loader.conf :

vmm_load=3D"YES&quo= t;

and it is located inside the directory /boot/ke= rnel and it is called vmm.ko

Is there a way to unl= oad it and reload it while FreeBSD is running,without rebooting the system = ? thanks.

ok. I've been able to unload vmm :

=
[root@marietto /dev/vmm]=3D=3D> bhyvectl --vm=3Dvm0:12 --dest= roy

[root@marietto /dev/vmm]=3D=3D> cd /dev/vmm= =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0 =C2=A0
cd: n= o such file or directory: /dev/vmm

OK.

but now I would like = to load it again :

[root@marietto /dev/vmm]=3D= =3D> kldload vmm =C2=A0
kldload: can't load vmm: module al= ready loaded or in kernel

[root@marietto /dev/vmm]= =3D=3D> kldstat | grep vmm

[root@marietto /dev/= vmm]=3D=3D> ls /dev/vmm
ls: /dev/vmm: No such file or directory

I'm trying to unload the vmm kernel modul= e,but it fails :

[root@marietto /bhyve]=3D=3D&= gt; kldunload -fv vmm
Unloading vmm.ko, id=3D13
kldunload: can= 't unload file: Device busy

I don't unders= tand why it fails,since I don't have any bhyve vm currently running :

[root@marietto /bhyve]=3D=3D> ps ax | grep b= hyve
6645 =C2=A04 =C2=A0RL+ =C2=A0 =C2=A0 0:00,00 grep bhyve (ggrep)

and yes,the vmm module is loaded in memory :

root@marietto /bhyve]=3D=3D> kldstat | grep vmm
13 = =C2=A0 =C2=A01 0xffffffff827ac000 =C2=A0 37c9e8 vmm.ko

= how has it been loaded inside the memory ? Using /boot/loader.conf :

vmm_load=3D"YES"

= and it is located inside the directory /boot/kernel and it is called vmm.ko=

bhyvectl --destroy --vm=3D<name>

<= /code>
=C2=A0

Is there a way to unload it= and reload it while FreeBSD is running,without rebooting the system ? than= ks.

Product: Base System Version: 14.1-RELEASE Hardware: Any OS: Any Status: New Severity: Affects Many People Priority: --- Component: bhyve Assignee: virtualization@FreeBSD.org Reporter: marietto2008@gmail.com Hello. The gpu passthru for the Windows VMs and the nvidia gpus works for a limited number of users. The special thing is that it is working for me at least on= the 14.0. The reason why it works is buried between the patches that have been developed for the stock 14.0 and maybe another patch developed for the 14.1 broke something on the 14.0. I've asked some help on the FreeBSD forums and= the guys suggested me to look for a regression. They suggested to use git bisec= t. This is what I should try to do : "If you are sure that it is working on a regular 14.0-RELEASE, then you cou= ld either use git-bisect to find the commit that did the regression or attempt= to revert any patch from 14.0 to 14.1 that change anything related to bhyve. In both case, this could result in some security risk (more security risk f= or the latter I would assume) and instability. For the following, I would suggest to do that with an empty state system: n= ew drive (external would be easy), remove the current drive on the machine. Having a secondary machine for the build is in my opinion necessary, this w= ould allow to build on one machine, generate an image and directly boot on the t= est machine the new image. For git-bisect, you could do like that: Go to the releng/14.1 branch, and take a note of the commit for 14.0. Assuming that you have already cloned the freebsd src repository, you could= do the following : git switch main git fetch origin releng/14.0 git fetch origin releng/14.1 git log -n 1 --pretty=3Dformat:%h origin/releng/14.0 git log -n 1 --pretty=3Dformat:%h origin/releng/14.1 Which gave me for 14.0 : 5e23806790ef , and for 14.1 : dcdea9e8623e Then do : git bisect start git bisect bad git bisect good COMMIT_OF_14.0 Then every time it stop, do a full build, install, and test your setup. If it is good, do git bisect good Else, do git bisect bad" I'm new of this thing,but I tried doing like this : [root@marietto /usr]# uname -a FreeBSD marietto 14.0-RELEASE-p6 FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE-p6 #0: Tue Mar 26 20:26:20 UTC 2024=20=20=20=20 root@amd64-builder.daemonology.net:/usr/obj/usr/src/amd64.amd64/sys/GENERIC amd64 [root@marietto /usr]# git clone https://git.FreeBSD.org/src.git /usr/src Clone in '/usr/src' in corso... remote: Enumerating objects: 4513103, done. remote: Counting objects: 100% (383516/383516), done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (28936/28936), done. remote: Total 4513103 (delta 377788), reused 354580 (delta 354580), pack-re= used 4129587 (from 1) Receiving objects: 100% (4513103/4513103), 1.64 GiB | 10.17 MiB/s, fatto. This function cannot read values of arbitrary sizes and will panic if the p9fs mount tag size is not supported by it. Use virtio_read_device_config_array() instead.
