Product: Base System Version: 14.1-RELEASE Hardware: amd64 OS: Any Status: New Severity: Affects Some People Priority: --- Component: wireless Assignee: wireless@FreeBSD.org Reporter: freebsd@felixknecht.de Created attachment 252391 --> https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/attachment.cgi?id=3D252391&action= =3Dedit Full console log I get a kernel panic when initializing an interface for the wifi card WLE20= 0NX (Atheros 9280?) This happens after upgrading my opnsense installation from 24.1 (using Free= BSD 13.2-p10) to 24.7 (using FreeBSD 14.1). I filed an issue there (https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=3D41816.= 0) and was told to tell you about this. Some more details: 1. This is not a generic problem with the wifi card. It seems the panic only happens when the created interface is part of a network bridge. I actually have two interfaces created using this card (different SSIDs) and the first one (WIFIG) gets created ok. When the second one (WIFIP) is creat= ed as part of a bridge, I get the kernel panic. Another user on the opnsense thread confirmed my suspicion that it is related to a bridge. 2. Disabling SMP seems to help. Another user wrote: "The kernel panic error= has been fixed adding kern.smp.disabled=3D1 sysctl tunable value." Here is some of what I get one the console (I attached the full output): FreeBSD is a registered trademark of The FreeBSD Foundation. The 7663 is mt7615 which I can indeed have a look. Given we are 6.x based this should be fine). If you want you could grab a link to this message from the mailing list archive and add a note to https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=264300 Any work on mt76 is still blocked on VM changes related to struct page in LinuxKPI which I am waiting for help. /bz -- Bjoern A. I cannot see a 1:1 nl80211.h implementation for FreeBSD any time soon.

You can look at ifconfig sources for freebsd how to obtain scan
information; it's simple ioctl.

I'd start here:
https://cgit.freebsd.o= rg/src/tree/sbin/ifconfig/ifieee80211.c#n3744

There rest of the code is in the library you can use as well (and which
ifconfig uses):
https://cgit.freebsd.org/src/tree/lib/lib80= 211

No, I am not aware of any of it either;=C2=A0 have you hit this more than o= nce?

Seems chanctx_conf->def.chan was NULL as that's 0xc offset.

That means this likely happened right before the first SCAN->AUTH happen= ed.
It seems we need to initialize the def.chan on vif creation as well.

For tracking purposes, yes, please file a PR;=C2=A0 for simplicity feel fre= e
