Thanks for all this info.
I received my RPI5 and noticed that the default serial/UART is not on GPIO anymore, but via a dedicated 3-pin JST HS (?) connector.

Do you use some cable on this? What do you use?

I found this: https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/debug-probe/
Does somebody know about a simpler JST-USB connector for serial console on RPI5?

Regards,
Ronald.

Hello Ronald,

(Working from memory and old Email content.)

I'll note that I have partitions for the FreeBSD EFI loader
(msdosfs), FreeBSD-in-UFS, and SWAP-space on USB3 media but
the rpi5-uefi content on a microsd card in a msdosfs . I
copy the FreeBSD loader.efi to the USB3's msdosfs with
appropriate path and file naming. (Note: My context is
normally main [so: 15 at this point].)

>From an old Email (/boot/efi is a mount point for USB3
media's msdsofs):

# find /boot/efi/EFI/ -print
/boot/efi/EFI/
/boot/efi/EFI/FREEBSD
/boot/efi/EFI/FREEBSD/loader.efi
/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT
/boot/efi/EFI/BOOT/bootaa64.efi

I doubt that the FREEBSD path is needed but I've always
blindly made both copies of the /boot/loader.efi that is in
FreeBSD's file system for aarch64.

Note: I force the capitalization of EFI to make the name
distinct. /boot/efi/efi/ is normal as I remember. EFI is in
the msdosfs .

In this organization, the microsd card is the starting point. The
rpi5-uefi then finds the USB3's msdosfs's BOOT/bootaa64.efi .
That in turn finds the USB3's FreeBSD kernel in UFS and loads and
starts it. That in turn does the mount of the root file system
(from the same UFS file system as the kernel in my context) and
starts the world code.

I've also done examples with ZFS (bectl use) instead of UFS in
the past but normally only use ZFS on the largest/fastest FreeBSD
configuration that I (usually) have access to. (I've never used
ZFS for redundancy or striping or such: just for bectl use.)

Mark

Thank you very much!
Just ordered a RPI5.

You are doing a wonderful thing here because we all know that the RPi hardware is everywhere. You can throw a rock and hit three of them in almost any direction. However the install process with FreeBSD seems to be a nightmare. Not as terrible as RISC-V but certainly not trivial. I hope that the wiki docs can be polished up a little and I will be happy to test. I have a RPi5 standing by, in the box, waiting for some months. The serial console idea is really of value to me ... so ... gee I hope we can figure that out. There must be pins on it somewhere for real serial goodness. I hope. -- -- Dennis Clarke RISC-V/SPARC/PPC/ARM/CISC UNIX and Linux spoken From nobody Tue Jan 14 13:02:08 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-arm@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4YXTmk25Csz5kfgD for ; Tue, 14 Jan 2025 13:02:14 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dclarke@blastwave.org) Received: from mail.oetec.com (mail.oetec.com [108.160.241.186]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature ECDSA (prime256v1) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mail.oetec.com", Issuer "E5" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4YXTmj5NnYz3Wpw for ; Tue, 14 Jan 2025 13:02:13 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from dclarke@blastwave.org) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; dkim=pass header.d=blastwave.org header.s=default header.b=TDlJBhre; spf=pass (mx1.freebsd.org: domain of dclarke@blastwave.org designates 108.160.241.186 as permitted sender) smtp.mailfrom=dclarke@blastwave.org; dmarc=pass (policy=quarantine) header.from=blastwave.org Received: from [172.16.35.3] (pool-99-253-118-250.cpe.net.cable.rogers.com [99.253.118.250]) (authenticated bits=0) by mail.oetec.com (8.17.1/8.17.1) with ESMTPSA id 50ED28BC090615 (version=TLSv1.3 cipher=TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 bits=128 verify=NOT) for ; Tue, 14 Jan 2025 08:02:10 -0500 (EST) (envelope-from dclarke@blastwave.org) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=simple/simple; d=blastwave.org; s=default; t=1736859730; bh=2Z3PYu3BJ/4aOGxACazUsiLtP/ozqvMUEMEVwTpjJrI=; h=Date:Subject:To:References:From:In-Reply-To; b=TDlJBhreVrrcHO1ivBcSc7ELmr/hYQsm0FQzgnat+DSbsSzYwCTw2DjW+ZAaAMrBw 4itHGlro30UtAi1pyLguYVZ+bLr7b5JN+WIH78wM/OiGUKFES2CAJp1Kxs6rAqCgiY fEEzZndrlvspBfmBpgx6XKg4K/I2QN790FjPyevBlPcUXJ07KIlJHH3X4XRkCqxPcR Ho7WCnFTSEnZywmHVv+A8H8zGxsUH5Bxp87JG5RupqZbIa/5XvY7rAy3sgtewXd+F3 CI0+2LsacqKfPkqqU0zMjTQbY8ZvzPWnIDSXNPc3gGnNjmyJHSjhi7wDtPQPMv6Cxq j4UOdL1mpSlhA== Message-ID: <712b899c-ed39-4087-8406-8ea6ceb09936@blastwave.org> Date: Tue, 14 Jan 2025 08:02:08 -0500 List-Id: Porting FreeBSD to ARM processors List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-arm List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-arm@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 User-Agent: Mozilla Thunderbird Subject: Re: RPI5 serial console? - Re: Raspbery Pi support (release notes/wiki page) update? Hi,

Thanks for all this info.
I received my RPI5 and noticed that the default serial/UART is not on GPIO = anymore, but via a dedicated 3-pin JST HS (?) connector.

Do you use some cable on this? What do you use?

I found this: https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/debug-probe/ Does somebody know about a simpler JST-USB connector for serial console on = RPI5?

I use the debug probe's= uart connector and it works well. The debug probe is recognised by FreeBSD= 's umodem driver which makes it easy to use a FreeBSD host to connect t= o the=C2=A0pi5's console.

Doug.

I'm trying to create a mobile phone with the look and feel of the Black Berry and with FreeBSD as an OS. This is the tutorial that I want to use as a base : https://hackaday.io/project/195587-blackberrypi-handheld as you can see he used this display : https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/hyperpixel-4-square?variant=3D3013825144= 4307 As soon as I saw it,I fell in love. I can accept a not finished piece of code, because if there is not much work to do is not much,I can start a crowdfunding campaign to raise the money and finish the job. Hello to everyone.

I'm trying to create a mobile phone with the look and feel of t= he Black Berry and with FreeBSD as an OS. This is the tutorial that I want = to use as a base :

as = you can see he used this display :

As = soon as I saw it,I fell in love. I want to use that display for my DiY phon= e. Problem is that I don't know if some code has been written as a driv= er to turn it on. To be honest I'm not even sure about which board to u= se. FreeBSD does not work well with the Arm low end boards.
=
I know that I want a slim phone. Do you have a board that yo= u would=C2=A0recommend me to use ?

Furthermor= e,the display should "match" well with the board, because I'm = not able to write a single piece of code.

I c= an accept a not finished piece of code, because if there is not much work to= do is not much,I can start a crowdfunding campaign to raise the money and = finish the job.

Everything is geared to linux so y= ou must translate. I want to understand if I have all the pieces needed.

Starting here:
=09 I would like to know if some FreeBSD developer is working on these compatib= le chipset :

compatible =3D "brcm,bcm2835";
compatible =3D "goodix,gt911";

Can som= eone share some relevant information about some useful piece of code, links,= that I can explore to understand if it is worth investing my time and money= on that display ?

Anyway,I don't want to= use the oblong displays used by the Android smartphone. That form factor i= s abused.

If the display that I found is not = good,I will continue searching for displays that have the same squared form= factor.

Hi,

Nice project. Just to mention that FreeBSD was apparently successfully
installed in a pinephone (https://mastodon.social/@tobykurien/113779792572310611)

All the best

Hello to everyone.

I'm trying to create a mobile phone with the look and feel of the Black Berry and with FreeBSD as an OS. This is the tutorial that I want to use as a base :

as you can see he used this display :

As soon as I saw it,I fell in love. I want to use that display for my DiY phone. Problem is that I don't know if some code has been written as a driver to turn it on. To be honest I'm not even sure about which board to use. FreeBSD does not work well with the Arm low end boards.

I know that I want a slim phone. Do you have a board that you would recommend me to use ?

Furthermore, the display should "match" well with the board, because I'm not able to write a single piece of code.

I can accept a not finished piece of code, because if there is not much work to do is not much,I can start a crowdfunding campaign to raise the money and finish the job.

Everything is geared to linux so you must translate. I want to understand if I have all the pieces needed.

Starting here:
I would like to know if some FreeBSD developer is working on these compatible chipset :

compatible = "brcm,bcm2835";
compatible = "goodix,gt911";

Can someone share some relevant information about some useful piece of code, links, that I can explore to understand if it is worth investing my time and money on that display ?

Anyway,I don't want to use the oblong displays used by the Android smartphone. That form factor is abused.

If the display that I found is not good,I will continue searching for displays that have the same squared form factor.

I'm trying to get some more attention to the 'trimming_ignore' error in the pkg building cluster.

See latest 141releng-armv7-quarterly failure: https://pkg-status.freebsd.org/ampere1/.

The part of the logs about this error are not public (AFAIK). So could somebody with access take a look what is happening?

Regards,
Ronald.

I'll note that the first example of this is from back on 2024-Dec-03:

default quarterly 141releng-armv7 257d1c796954 0 0 0 733 1456 -2189 trimming_ignore: Tue, 03 Dec 2024 13:31:50 GMT 00:04:34 ampere1

That is: quarterly, 14.1, on ampere1

Not being all that old, it seems to be associated with some sort of fairly recent change.

The 2024-Dec-03 failure is 41 armv7 build attempts ago (if I counted right). It is one of the 8 such failures so far. So, usually the build attempts do not get this problem. (Racy failure?)

So far, there are examples of each of:

Quarterly: 13.3, 14.1
Latest:    13.3, 13.4, main

An implication is that all 3 of ampere[1-3] have had it happen.

So, what changed that applies to all 3 ampere* machines?

An interesting oddity is the elapsed time's ranges over the 8 failures:

Shortest: 00:04:08
Longest:  00:17:58

But looking at which machine separately:

ampere1 (so: quarterly):
Shortest: 00:04:08
Longest:  00:05:41

ampere3 (so latest --but not main)
Shortest: 00:07:56
Longest:  00:08:42

ampere2 (just one example for main, which is an example of latest)
Shortest: 00:17:58
Longest:  00:17:58
