In my tenure so far, I have worked mostly with protocols such as IPsec, TLS/SSL to support VPNs across various use cases, alongside authoring a couple of patents. However, I never got my hands on open source contributions and would like to change that starting with this year's GSOC. After browsing the freebsd page, I found out a project titled "Implement MPLS support for FreeBSD" which piqued my interest and was wondering if this is something that could be taken up this year. Would like some guidance regarding this on how and where to get started on. Hi Priyabrata, I've copied Alexander, the listed mentor for this project, as well as Gleb, a FreeBSD developer who has mentored networking projects in the past. The next step would be to engage with Alexander (and Gleb if he's interested) to determine whether this is still a viable project and whether you, the project, and the mentor(s) are a good fit. Your background suggests you would be well-qualified for this or other networking-related projects. It's also important to keep track of the GSoC timeline. The application period opens on March 24 at 18:00 UTC: https://developers.google.com/open-source/gsoc/timeline You can find resources on writing a proposal at: - https://www.freebsd.org/projects/summerofcode/#proposals - https://google.github.io/gsocguides/student/writing-a-proposal Feel free to respond to me, Alexander, and Gleb off-list if you have any other questions. I am interested in participating in Google Summer of Code 2025 with FreeBSD and would like to work on the VLAN Filtering Software Bridge project. I have an intermediate understanding of C programming, networking, data structures, and algorithms, and I am eager to contribute to FreeBSD. Before submitting my proposal, I would appreciate guidance on: - The current state of VLAN filtering in FreeBSD=E2=80=99s bridge implem= entation. - Any specific performance or functionality improvements expected from this project. - Existing resources or references that would help me understand FreeBSD=E2=80=99s networking stack better. I would be grateful for any insights or suggestions from the community. If a mentor is available for this project, I would love to connect and discuss the scope further. Thank you for your time and consideration. I'm looking forward to hearing back from you! I am Prabhat Kumar, an u= ndergraduate student at MNNIT Allahabad, majoring in Electronics and Commun= ication Engineering. I am interested in participating in Google Summer of C= ode 2025 with FreeBSD and would like to work on the VLAN Filtering Software= Bridge project. I have an intermediate understanding of C programming, net= working, data structures, and algorithms, and I am eager to contribute to F= reeBSD.

Before submitting my proposal, I would appreciate guidance on= :

  • The current state of VLAN filtering= in FreeBSD=E2=80=99s bridge implementation.
  • Any specific performance or functionality improvements expected from t= his project.
  • Existing resources or refer= ences that would help me understand FreeBSD=E2=80=99s networking stack bett= er.

I would be grateful for any insights or suggestions from th= e community. If a mentor is available for this project, I would love to con= nect and discuss the scope further.

Thank you for your time and consi= deration. I'm looking forward to hearing back from you!

Best rega= rds,
Prabhat Kumar

I would like to remind you that reports are published on a quarterly basis and are usually collected during the last month of each quarter, You are also welcome to submit them even earlier if you want, and the earlier you submit them, the more time we have for reviewing. Status report submissions do not need to be very long. They may be about anything happening in the FreeBSD project and community, and they provide a great way to inform FreeBSD users and developers about work that is underway or has been completed. Report submissions are not limited to committers; anyone doing anything interesting and FreeBSD related can -- and should -- write one! The following methods are available to submit your reports: * submit a review on Phabricator and add the group "status" to the reviewers list. You should put your reports in the directory doc/website/content/en/status/report-2025-01-2025-03/ (create it if it is missing); * submit a pull request at . You should put your reports in the directory doc/website/content/en/status/report-2025-01-2025-03/ (create it if it is missing); * send an email to status-submissions@FreeBSD.org including your report. An AsciiDoc template is available at . We look forward to seeing your 2025Q1 reports! Thanks, Lorenzo Salvadore (on behalf of status@)
