Interestingly, apart from some IPv6 ndp and also showmount problems, this works nicely. Regarding "apart", what does not initially work with this "wrong" setup: - on mizar: "showmount -e " - this is fixed by running "showmount -e mizar" on any of them, then the command on mizar succeeds (if done quickly enough, even while the one on mi= zar is still trying) - Underlying seems to be an IPv6 ndp issue, the showmount is by default usi= ng IPv6 in my setup. See also bug 247912 which is not really valid because of = the "wrong" configuration. So unfortunately I cannot say with which commit this surfaced. -- Martin --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri May 30 14:09:21 2025 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4b84qP3YM8z5xjbQ for ; Because the bridge setup did not work, I reverted to em0 directly, but this time using the native driver. The result is quite disastrous, the Windows 10 VirtualBox client does not get connectivity at all using this setup. Reverting to if_em_updated (i.e., net/intel-em-kmod) and rebooting results = in a fully behaving Windows 10 vbox client. This should actually go to bug 235031. -- Martin p.s. I just realize - even though the interface name is the same, might it = be necessary to newly select this interface in the VirtualBox configuration? VirtualBox did not complain when starting the machine, so I assumed the set= up was o.k. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri May 30 15:20:37 2025 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4b86Pd3rkdz5xnGk for ; They are created and destroyed dynamically when bhyve clients are run. (In reply to Lexi Winter from comment #5) VirtualBox uses special kernel drivers to attach to an interface in bridged mode. As far as I can see in the sources (emulators/virtualbox-ose-kmod), it uses netgraph and bpf. Maybe one or both of these are missing from if_bridg= e. They are created and destroyed dynamically when bhyve clients are run. --- Yes, but at the current state of the network subsystem and if_bridge(4) in particular the operator is expected to create all interfaces and bridges in advance and the dynamically attach VMs or jails to these. Dynamically creating bridge interfaces was never supported if either - the bridge member interface providing the connectivity to the outside wor= ld had an IP address configured - the bridge member interface had any VLANs configured with it as the parent I see that Lexi is investing a lot of work into reworking this part of the stack. And I am curious where this will lead. Great work! I am merely stating that in FreeBSD 13 and 14 the known and documented state is: - a bridge member must not have an IP address - a bridge member must not be a parent to any VLAN interfaces So technically speaking there is no bug here. Just a misconfiguration. I am trying to get everything running with this "correct" setup, but am running into the issues described. Up till now I was using the "incorrect" setup, where the IP addresses stayed with em0. This was working surprisingly well, except for IPv6 ndp needing s= ome prodding. But the "correct" setup, which I am trying to configure, results in connectivity problems under high load. This is the main issue. A side issue is that VirtualBox cannot attach to the bridge, but must be attached to em0 instead, which is a bridge member. Another unrelated issue are the additional difficulties I encounter with the native em0 driver as opposed to net/intel-em-kmod. Where in the manual pages does it say that a bridge must be set up in advan= ce and must then not be changed during its lifetime? -- Martin --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sun Jun 1 09:19:49 2025 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4b9BJQ1Mwhz5xNsK for ;
