I'm wondering what the equivalent to the Linux rp_filter is on FreeBSD. I'm asking because I've got a set-up on a hosting provider where I have a floating IP address that's not related to the main IP address of my system. Which is to say, my system is a.b.c.10 and routes through a.b.c.1, and I've got a floating IP that's x.y.z.50. Traffic from that x.y.z.50 address is supposed to route through a.b.c.1. I've got a vnet jail that's set up to use that x.y.z.50 address, and I've assigned x.y.z.50 to epair0b in the jail, but I ran into a problem. I couldn't tell that jail to use a.b.c.1 as its default gateway and that that was out through epair0a without assigning an a.b.c address to epair0a, even though I don't actually have a spare assigned to me. I believe I can just tell Linux to ram packets out an arbitrary interface if I turn off rp_filtering via a syscall, but I'm not sure how to cleanly do this with FreeBSD, hence my resorting to pilfering an IP address. I'll never receive traffic intended for this pilfered address and there's no risk of it causing confusion, but it doesn't feel like a clean answer. So, there's my question: is there some way I can have my vnet jail send packets out an interface that the system believes is unrelated to the IP address assigned to that interface? The "fix" your problem ...... You need to create a bridge. Add your main interface to the bridge. You can assign your .10 to the bridge. Then, you can create your epair. Assign the a side the bridge and the b side to your jail. Add your .50 the the 'b' side, and add the default route of .1. This allows L2+ traffic to work correctly for both the host and jail. ~Paul --=20 __________________ :(){ :|:& };: From nobody Mon Jun 30 02:22:31 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bVqgZ1jgyz5yn5K for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 02:22:34 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mason@blisses.org) Received: from yangtze.blisses.org (yangtze.blisses.org [144.202.50.44]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4bVqgY5zVKz3JZL for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 02:22:33 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mason@blisses.org) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from contoocook.blisses.org (contoocook.blisses.org [68.238.57.52]) by yangtze.blisses.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id CA53F17DE81; Sun, 29 Jun 2025 22:22:32 -0400 (EDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=blisses.org; s=default; t=1751249620; bh=fCk0tL6o1043DkI7giO/TRyJpifAc0vQ6I5ssDc+0fU=; h=Date:From:To:Cc:Subject:References:In-Reply-To:From; b=IEoo30pCPuErrM2OtkdVgGAb66swFH8UCGQyjuiyiimcXwKTq5b9bsA7eQqN6Ho2o SnqhgDGvTZMJarLI4JoE0AxjbUzWCcW3BUDeZ8pT7H2ODytud3AEOyPzXWWOqpZ3pS RvBAjVRbyO5J2ij0PQNlv7xeZ3EJb4Banna5sBlrEvZC8qWFjUCj5YySK2gMs7mq4j qHyD1JnXyToQwc6hAyE0L5lNmeED7cEM2A1ZdhtnRyLQwSShq+WV/RDnAWED5JAVGX 50RlFr8Jy/qWTO79dXqRelRbknN4KIrXtG+SahwzdIfBpwIiqpVp5r1TC1nOKaYmfc 0tKQPt6azx0Bg== Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2025 22:22:31 -0400 From: Mason Loring Bliss To: Paul Procacci Cc: freebsd-net@freebsd.org Subject: Re: rp_filter equivalent? Hrm, hrm. That's what I was doing first. I was basing it off what I use here: https://wiki.freebsd.org/MasonLoringBliss/JailsEpair In fact... I... am pretty sure I did exactly what you're suggesting, but the system told me I couldn't set a default route in the jail because it wasn't a legal address. So: NIC, epair0a in bridge0; epair0b in vnet jail. If epair0b had the correct (floating) address I couldn't set the default route, because the default route was in an unrelated /24. I had to set epair0a to something in the same /24 for me to get a default route set for epair0b, and I had to break epair0a out of the bridge. I'll mess with it again sometime soon because I feel like it really ought to have worked the way I set it up first. I'll report back here with more details. It's working now, but I really don't like *how* it's working. --=20 Mason Loring Bliss (( If I have not seen as far as others, it is because mason@blisses.org )) giants were standing on my shoulders. - Hal Abels= on --lpCum9QrXN1xQoGV Content-Type: application/pgp-signature; name="signature.asc" -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCgAdFiEEEXtBZz1axB5rEDCEnrJXcHbvJVUFAmhh9OUACgkQnrJXcHbv JVWtEg//bEtFlEaUyWfV6NuBukZCSVkPwooGjlpczR8GbWQhs9OPKqnr1BauJ9PC 2Uns6FZQEEBNgv7rR9dnznQc4/AJ6Z/ok2V6OVGPLHG6jAdTGtGPx2jStqrW2S/U rkkSy7aCBfRDZE9in0WmFvt0ShZedXuYw03KbWvl19qTY4xidySSxNKGrMF+/2nc CjxGlH4Dw2jBAjp7gL2/glKyowJ18C443FGPy3RJyftIHI6VI+0trj/SV/h8PLjl gIdOzFgzZxNJryy41TajwzwuUrTRlFphgvExnLTJNivU3Ewijfqg2HYdGt6fhaob IFCCXze/+/gusDEkFaLLVgUtjcpPCv9ki0VETS4w0+IQ4/OFVlw5LH6Y2tnQxVtb lsHCBV7IQ/J79WIknNhZfyInfThT87c6OvKWN5xlF6fi3Gfga2X04DcMk4xCbj5s Aglbu5HP9XtC290vm/YpSr1PxPmwUBh6xThY79hXt7lFr41sCG0BhxQLzrq6mKLj X3CLiOhX1ioOxQLKsJfWAZskqwjclXhwCJnFpX8dxQRaskEbXfVT0hrrFUXPf8AT ZQ2jpyt598+uD7pyTYTsYEvPbrAuuQEK33XpInk6DaB1JyBun3Cr5JShLB3Jzvai p7b8e4Y+gvciL0jJDWBqhWFG2/vD55UBq4dYvo7goskcVP4zDVo= =/Thv -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --lpCum9QrXN1xQoGV-- From nobody Mon Jun 30 02:55:49 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bVrQD09Slz5yq1P for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 02:56:04 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pprocacci@gmail.com) Received: from mail-ed1-x52e.google.com (mail-ed1-x52e.google.com [IPv6:2a00:1450:4864:20::52e]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256 (128/128 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (2048 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.gmail.com", Issuer "WR4" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4bVrQC3Lmwz3f7Z for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 02:56:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from pprocacci@gmail.com) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: by mail-ed1-x52e.google.com with SMTP id 4fb4d7f45d1cf-6097b404f58so6838899a12.3 for ; Sun, 29 Jun 2025 19:56:03 -0700 (PDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=gmail.com; s=20230601; t=1751252160; x=1751856960; darn=freebsd.org; h=content-transfer-encoding:cc:to:subject:message-id:date:from :in-reply-to:references:mime-version:from:to:cc:subject:date :message-id:reply-to; bh=4icY0Bk0XEBjsDvIF6ULFxUxj5M+f8/cg7VVtm39QPo=; b=kYff0Avvpa4Q3YZAymP9KlbHb4b9n4ASYYc25Uqq2RGcwCNX8/3X2rRWdo3JeUcH8t ObKY+u3SDPH7e0s6vWcANr5Vn9CaZ03+Bd/fli1WZg9o/XWTJ+M7v2BR1aUEv9eykqt6 Zro53sHbu7eBMuFRlWxcNeWditzveTZaG0FmvBY8GR/Mpfl/1R2PCY14B5/uXjwlY8H6 64NrqHcY7QtSDXgHdxzh7Yml1qeDuhH60B+DIYE+JgwGELsgTZD2YU1QxhAhUdzAW+jM rgGpIqwzIUjy7bvLns/yQttw+whxkouG7JctgmAO0ieiGsc8DgIfakQDBCMBy7IQlGF3 VmZg== X-Google-DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=1e100.net; s=20230601; t=1751252160; x=1751856960; h=content-transfer-encoding:cc:to:subject:message-id:date:from :in-reply-to:references:mime-version:x-gm-message-state:from:to:cc :subject:date:message-id:reply-to; bh=4icY0Bk0XEBjsDvIF6ULFxUxj5M+f8/cg7VVtm39QPo=; b=PnqIxUF/N5dI1+M5WbC99swAIxoi+jx4m52l5zhWYQpefHn23z27ZxUaZquExE448b 2xbi1LR9bNIDQ0bZgO+2DE/8GElZ6ASFY6CE5pBfhVsO+cxfBJNRtrOYRz1PGxavWvHc 83uKz+1tnVBS7eoo3RhVke7mDMFLxMhsXHkdx1yD4Hu8WJp2uXDE85Q/PwZCitRaEqBd 6CuZFCqB2qnbEddUVl84ai/tM5+iyertF66X0F/T+9vN0hHXUrEbhhL4aIYo7mropini +odHIxqCb1wO0pUaQtKcjH3vmYs0l8VItzKeGSF3F4/1f7KOPFpLtOEiPXgF50x+20gw mGPA== X-Gm-Message-State: AOJu0YxLOsm349LMhqrBy6rEefVXnDzem1WeeGQsptJ/ppOdbnbAfl5S jXscFsiruPWf1SjZLrUB0uPZB0lS1QsUyMu9OJPC5b1jQeZGAG/wXE+TIEaBGC25qlgrauvtMqF Zmyrr7tbq1gxZ/rJudn1f98TtUEy1pVZyIPI= X-Gm-Gg: ASbGncs8RujYocb6MhF/lqgHsK5AZiHUJB2sHrmR2LyGRgS61GMOIfz4P/CudLliDa+ Jb3pVTdS9B8iU1wea2cyCCPDVSpza2Gl5K7bAohQtxPKywKXCIk42jalLe1rkZsrktJnMdn8wsS +wcGqz1aA6u7amHKvlt/H1tRYVBlU22ZuSsp+5Or5r X-Google-Smtp-Source: AGHT+IHpIvrWzLyFmgYbk11Qq1veLVZWR/TeVh57d+jDK6+Qy31u0AYsiQTi29oH0okdIjAyFI4JmKugAhgeTHBeWbk= X-Received: by 2002:a17:907:3c89:b0:ae0:cc9c:b5e2 with SMTP id a640c23a62f3a-ae35019ddc5mr1217238566b.48.1751252159938; Sun, 29 Jun 2025 19:55:59 -0700 (PDT) List-Id: Networking and TCP/IP with FreeBSD List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-net List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-net@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 References: In-Reply-To: From: Paul Procacci Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2025 22:55:49 -0400 X-Gm-Features: Ac12FXyHcChGWuQNsDV6VUTueG7gYPH8Q1sWlko1NHXBMP0ktoRRxUIfnhvjElo Message-ID: Subject: Re: rp_filter equivalent? To clear up any confusion ... you have two ip addresses, each one being in different subnets. The ip assigned to the host and the gateway that the host talks to are in one subnet while the other ip address assigned to the jail/vnet is in an entirely different subnet. The easiest solution here is asking the provider for a gateway you can use with the ip address in the second subnet, assuming it's anything but a /32. Without that, you'd have to forgo using VNET and instead first add the ip address as an alias to the main interface, only then to be assigned to the jail upon startup. It would share the system networking but there'd be no confusion at that point how things get routed. Using VNET, you can try the following within the jail but I've never tried: route add -net w.x.y.z/mask a.b.c.1 route add default a.b.c.1 Not sure if that'd work but seems reasonable. ~Paul -- __________________ :(){ :|:& };: From nobody Mon Jun 30 03:09:46 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bVrk445fKz5yqw8 for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 03:09:48 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mason@blisses.org) Received: from yangtze.blisses.org (yangtze.blisses.org [144.202.50.44]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4bVrk36szgz3ngB for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 03:09:47 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from mason@blisses.org) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from contoocook.blisses.org (contoocook.blisses.org [68.238.57.52]) by yangtze.blisses.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 5FD8B182A47; Sun, 29 Jun 2025 23:09:47 -0400 (EDT) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/simple; d=blisses.org; s=default; t=1751252454; bh=t1F1dZMbzyKQ5owrCr1NnEVs27lc2Ndp9+RcxO2Xa28=; h=Date:From:To:Cc:Subject:References:In-Reply-To:From; b=apssJ8GYrJZOXXfyAbdWTJQYQjuN72r1aUBji0nyPMASQMRVIKqhz3QvQJU6WQdbR Mvgdnfw4WoX6HILwzdWchMrKmygnZMPwnTsEjApOgBwYlPCYcOz819DNYb0ukgsFxy 8xxVFscMPD70Dvhjr4wcvD3jKiFiFKbdZSsS83xFm6FV0KQK13ZF8MclQEbVWBglEN LxLcsNmCAI59s7Vg1+Lp9NWID9lVvdGEcLp8jlkPCzTrsiBSdv/WgR7zojig812cQ5 FY/UrHc/55HfeZYDCKRXHY0lXFcK2eCYYdciTozlIcbU20qFS0nf1oIiTLqqQ5ea1i PPo82kfQrb+og== Date: Sun, 29 Jun 2025 23:09:46 -0400 From: Mason Loring Bliss To: Paul Procacci Cc: freebsd-net@freebsd.org Subject: Re: rp_filter equivalent? That's what I remember trying initially, but unsuccessfully, although I don't know that I included a subnet mask for w.x.y.z. It was a month and a half ago and I was thrashing around through a number of options, so I'll try it again this week and document things more closely. I ultimately believe you're going to have to add the second ip address as an alias to the main interface and then launch your jail w/out VNET taking that secondary ip address for its own use. This means you can forgo epairs and the like, and just let FBSD do its thing from there on out with a standard jail. ~Paul --=20 __________________ :(){ :|:& };: From nobody Mon Jun 30 03:53:39 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bVsht5hSLz5ytbK for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 03:53:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jamie@catflap.org) Received: from donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net (donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net [IPv6:2001:19f0:7400:8808:12:4:0:1]) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bVsht1q2Bz3CCK for ; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 03:53:50 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from jamie@catflap.org) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none X-Catflap-Envelope-From: X-Catflap-Envelope-To: freebsd-net@FreeBSD.org Received: from donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net (donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net [209.250.224.51]) by donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net (8.14.5/8.14.5) with ESMTP id 55U3rduC021153; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 04:53:39 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from jamie@donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net) Received: (from jamie@localhost) by donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net (8.14.5/8.14.5/Submit) id 55U3rdKh021152; Mon, 30 Jun 2025 04:53:39 +0100 (BST) (envelope-from jamie) From: Jamie Landeg-Jones Message-Id: <202506300353.55U3rdKh021152@donotpassgo.dyslexicfish.net> Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2025 04:53:39 +0100 Organization: Dyslexic Fish To: mason@blisses.org, freebsd-net@FreeBSD.org Subject: Re: rp_filter equivalent? Unless I've misread, you simply want to route through an IP that is physically "on your lan", but isn't configured as being "on your lan". try adding this static route: route add -host a.b.c.1 -iface em0 (replace em0 with the name of the network interface that is physically connected to the a.b.c.1 Ip address) Then simply set the default gateway to a.b.c.1 as you tried to do already. Basically, you were trying to set the default to the IP of your router which wasn't within your configured IP subnet. route add -host a.b.c.1 -iface em0 basically means 'to get to this out-of-scope ip address, just send the packets down interface em0, as it's directly accessable that way, even though the normal config doesn't imply it' For rc.conf in the jail, this should be all you need to add: static_routes="defaultrouter" route_defaultrouter="-host a.b.c.1 -iface em0" defaultrouter="a.b.c.1" (modified as appropriate, of course) . Honestly I wanted to= use IPSEC with racoon but the problem I seemed to be having with that was NAT a= nd using NAT-T the correct way (or there's something else wrong. There are issu= es with that depending on whether you use transport or tunnel; and depending on fragmentation settings.=20 I'll probably revisit this at some point but I just used wireguard it works even though I don't really care for it that much--it works, though part of = the configuration I'm doing with rc.local:=20 rc.conf takes care of standing up the interface and configuring it wg0: flags=3D10080c1 metric 0 mtu 1420 options=3D80000 inet 192.0.2.1 netmask 0xfffffffe inet6 fcff:56::192:0:2:1 prefixlen 64 groups: wg fib: 56 tunnelfib: 255 nd6 options=3D101 rc.local associates the keys and remotes with the interface:=20 wg setconf wg0 /usr/local/etc/wireguard/wg0.conf you can close this if you want but in more than a decade of using OpenVPN I= 've never felt so defeated as I have by ovpn(4) moreover I don't think it's cap= able in it's current state of functioning in the way I need it to (where it is assigned to fib 56 and uses FIB 255 for the tunnel)--wireguard just *barely= * is and not only that but the best I could come up with was to add the last com= mand for it's setup to rc.local. I looked around for quite a while and I've found some evidence of people who have used it at different points in time and I = also don't think that it's always functioned the same way because some of the examples that I was able to piece together didn't work at all.=20 I don't really like using wireguard, but I'm not really keen on OpenVPN to = be honest and I feel like even ovpn at some point was a shortcut to get away f= rom having to deal with security associations, fragmentation with AH/ESP, NAT-T, etc.IPSEC hasn't always been the most reliable thing from one client to the next so there was also that but it's hard to imagine how that could be anym= ore so in theory the only obstacle is figuring out how to set it up in every ca= se. You can close this if you want. Personally, and I know my opinions are unpopular but I think for something that is in tree it should probably have= a little more documentation in the man page. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Mon Jun 30 06:34:39 2025 X-Original-To: net@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bVxGS4Mzjz603X1 for ; When I've tried this I cannot seem to get traffic to route past the bridge. My aim is to get bhyve working with network access on my laptop on WiFi. So far I have had to use Ethernet connections. If this setup is not possible what are the alternatives? I've never tried this, but wds might work; not sure if your base system then still works without extra hoops. Also not sure it's all there (I know there is code and a tool in the tools folder). Adrian might know? Might want to ask on wireless? The best alternatives are to do a L2 or L3 NAT onto wifi. /bz -- Bjoern A. Fix both prblems by using only two bytes of the digest and then OR'ing against the mask, which has the appropriate byte set for the fourth octet of the range already; essentially, our digest is only contributing the last two octets. Change is the author, but any blame for the commit message goes to kevans.
