What does=20 "jail is not happy" mean? At a very high level, you should be able to: - upgrade host to 15 (currently in ALPHA5 only) - continue to use your existing poudriere setup - add a 15.0 builder by `poudriere jail -c -j 15amd64 -v 15.0-ALPHA5 -K = GENERIC` or similar > How is FreeBSD's releng infrastructure deal with this? FreeBSD releng infrastructure typically runs a recent-ish CURRENT=20 now at 16.x, and builds from sources, using the makefile targets in /usr/src/ & /usr/src/release to ensure a pristine build env, not poudriere. Generally, I'd suggest waiting for at least the BETA or RC to test, follow https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.0R/schedule/ for timelines. Yann you might need to provide some more info. What does
"jail is not happy" mean?

Sor= ry for being unclear:
It is 1. "[2025-09-29T00:16:47.863Z] [= 00:00:00] Warning: !!! Jail is newer than host. (Jail: 1500064, Host: 14030= 00) !!!" and 2. "2025-09-29T00:16:48.654Z] [00:00:01] Error: /opt= /poudriere/share/poudriere/bulk.sh:jail_start:316:Unable to execute id(1) i= n jail. Emulation or ABI wrong."

1. is just a= warning. 2. is fatal (and I guess I was warned with 1)
=C2=A0

At a very high level, you should be able to:

- upgrade host to 15 (currently in ALPHA5 only)

What method do you recommend for that?=C2=A0
=C2=A0
- continue to use your existing poudriere setup
- add a 15.0 builder by `poudriere jail -c -j 15amd64 -v 15.0-ALPHA5 -K GEN= ERIC` or similar

I've also backport= ed a old fopen patch from John Baldwin=C2=A0https://github.com/bsdjhb/freebsd/commit= s/stdio_file/ onto the kernel of the builders and their jails
=C2=A0

> How is FreeBSD's releng infrastructure deal with this?

FreeBSD releng infrastructure typically runs a recent-ish CURRENT
now at 16.x, and builds from sources, using the makefile targets
in /usr/src/ & /usr/src/release to ensure a pristine build env,
not poudriere.
=C2=A0
I see, thanks
=C2=A0
Generally, I'd suggest waiting for at least the BETA or RC to
test, follow https://www.freebsd.org/releases/15.0R/= schedule/
for timelines.

Yes, I wanted to get ahe= ad of the release schedule a little bit to get early test results

Thanks

Yann

Initial "Queued ports" stage reports: "Showing 1 to 10 of 37,164 entries". That 37,164 appears to be the total number of potential port-packages across all the ports for 2025Q4's quarterly as of the snapshot used for 24fedaeb4e97. Later (top of page) Filtered stage: "Queued" "992" (my terminology) Note: Built + Failed + Skipped + Ignored =3D=3D 373 + 152 + 121 + 346 =3D=3D 992 =3D=3D Filtered stage: Queued 992 So they match just fine. 37164-992=3D=3D36172 port-packages will not be in any of the 4 categories above. The vast majority of the port-packages that were built overall were built in 2 prior bulk runs that failed to complete ( were partial, e3fa556c9a50 and d1f407b76f7a ). Both such failures lead to a manually initiated "sigterm:" status. All 4 builds were on beefy21. I do not see much mystery here. I will also note that the counting can end up with Remaining -1 on occasion, even when the build otherwise works normally. I do not know what contributes to that. =3D=3D=3D Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com From nobody Fri Oct 10 07:42:08 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-pkg@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4cjdxV29qyz6BXR7 for ; Fri, 10 Oct 2025 07:42:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from olce@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp.freebsd.org (smtp.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::24b:4]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.freebsd.org", Issuer "R13" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4cjdxV1gHkz3Y3h; Fri, 10 Oct 2025 07:42:22 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from olce@freebsd.org) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1760082142; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=KF58GX8mqsMJ5xaZusfWPe3Rd9U/aj6EfQLIoTsPA3Q=; b=BDgLtC18dpE7i5J4xMQDAzci7DGjaj/62XkwDC7V4y+iDkkzRdB9LL81YuNP5it0QDr4A+ 6OiJpaSLaRDbSk8hEAATmzb5v5qGxtAHgbcTkZ+r53Drju0xE+RMYFlhs7ux6/aH6UzTNE qNB8CYwHzOLwhCcRJlVl1dp6Bke7v3R3A5nnI1FiwKxp7enHLvkvEkjso4PcOU1o/tubQw LpQenq3gglhyb8m3VxVM9Mt5Mx4o4Ck+dKvRpa/vvnUAxgB1Kevt0tMSbxqYnijAeFx8Q/ jyjNYGJZo+eY4YNp8w3wA8/2Kt7q3XIxS/TVvOjlSLaWmPvSlQZGJPihZ+SX8w== ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1760082142; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=KF58GX8mqsMJ5xaZusfWPe3Rd9U/aj6EfQLIoTsPA3Q=; b=xVdXw8ggXYqfRuQUctGkONKmcsq/n1umNm2gpsqOncItcJyh4EjBOlvRqHP81pIfAVofVY +PEIu+tthFHWxmIogpohLhHU2smVz0VhiaIMwa2oH5YxVSuKAUf+gL1c2/Fo8Dup5fgQwm d0bc9ihD8tkT0is6ivmfimkqlM7aW6Eazv2c2ITUDBAuIGgUC44owCwqm7MXcxk+zcRT7I ZQfO5AizQTUNS4G87luj2xXWFpk8VavmYkePhQE2tfZY/IedmaLvgjuTcjb7qdikLGP2Vx aLiHWOpIP0DDbxcY4M9O21VAsJRqqNPglzarvpP7/UnMJVgkzcSJIf1PywCYIw== ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1760082142; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=QwZ25O/B7Zb7MdUdadgMKoZYZWQggy5c7Z3vaCKrILx28HaH9/tWgZNmBR4wQ9o3CklyS6 UGW2kkRga7EQMbX1nk+7GLV3kAlKDfFq5+kT9G9x0pQV4oyNBh0rhCySe8NFB60TRpnZry JzuZeI5vbGYsXLdcOpXfWMRXKy7zLt98Vw2LNRRsURlnEgLBLAMW+2so849ILNckLXCoxq JXiA2c8eycpTU8KgqLpz0S2h1R22SnSS1bCg2d6MiMZb3zwK3exrWXW6xyUQxYjyTSHR0Z a5onIhbdiJziF7BWZYNWyL3oWDY7Fz0SMvYRxN7IdeiXQpMz/JqxtiadMdv4DQ== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from ravel.localnet (aclermont-ferrand-653-1-222-123.w90-14.abo.wanadoo.fr [90.14.66.123]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) (Authenticated sender: olce/mail) by smtp.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 4cjdxT5p8szsKW; Fri, 10 Oct 2025 07:42:21 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from olce@freebsd.org) From: Olivier Certner To: Mark Millard Cc: freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FYI: 15stable-amd64-quarterly has had 2 successful builds, despite not being distributed yet Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2025 09:42:08 +0200 Message-ID: <4202286.BRNeRiNLvY@ravel> In-Reply-To: References: List-Id: Binary package management and package tools discussion List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-pkg List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-pkg@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="nextPart2429802.mfXeX5GmMH"; micalg="pgp-sha384"; protocol="application/pgp-signature" --nextPart2429802.mfXeX5GmMH Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"; protected-headers="v1" From: Olivier Certner To: Mark Millard Cc: freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2025 09:42:08 +0200 Message-ID: <4202286.BRNeRiNLvY@ravel> In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Hi, > Build Status Started (UTC) Elapsed > 9a9cbb37913d done: Tue, 07 Oct 2025 08:51:36 GMT 13:00:53 > 24fedaeb4e97 done: Thu, 09 Oct 2025 01:03:13 GMT 11:35:38 > > For reference: > > https://pkg-status.freebsd.org/beefy21/build.html?mastername=15stable-amd64-quarterly&build=9a9cbb37913d > https://pkg-status.freebsd.org/beefy21/build.html?mastername=15stable-amd64-quarterly&build=24fedaeb4e97 It's doubtful that these were successful, as the report pages list only ~300 to ~400 build packages, and more than 30,000 queued... The "Queue" number at top of the page, e.g., like here: > 24fedaeb4e97: > Queued Built Failed Skipped Ignored Fetched Remaining > 992 373 152 121 346 0 0 is thus inconsistent with the "Queued" ones at the bottom. It is the sum of the numbers from the other categories, so should probably be renamed to "To build" or even simpler to "Total". It is also inconsistent with the "queued" data (or whatever exact word which I don't remember right now) that shows up when using ^T during a build. I think this warrants opening a bug report. "Showing 1 to 10 of ??,??? entries" is reporting how many port-packages are available in that list displayed above it that have entries for everything in the "scope of the build", to use your terminology. To see that: Click on the # column's control that reverses the "Queued ports" list. The top # will then match the ??,??? entries figure (ignoring the ","). If someone changes the "??,??? entries" definition to be some other type of figure, that will no longer be true unless the list content is also changed to match. Are you suggesting to change the content of the that list and the whole page to make no reference to the "scope of the build" information (no count, no list for such)? Are you suggesting that the list should only list the port-packages that are in the "Total" and, so, that the "entries" figure would have the same value as "Total"? > I think this warrants opening a bug report. Would you please do it if = you have some time? The existing "Queued ports" is probably better called: "All port-packages" (Calling the items ports when a port can define multiple packages and pacakges are what is built is odd these days --and has been for a long time.) So if the "scope of the build" information is kept, I expect that its terminology should be changed to avoid ambiguity. I could imagine having lists and figures for both: ) "Total's port-packages" and: ) "All port-packages" Although, I view "Total's port-packages" as more important. Note: If I understand right, such may well be changes to how poudriere works for providing html pages. =3D=3D=3D Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com From nobody Fri Oct 10 13:55:55 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-pkg@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4cjpDg2HNkz6C4RN for ; Fri, 10 Oct 2025 13:56:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from olce@freebsd.org) Received: from smtp.freebsd.org (smtp.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::24b:4]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "smtp.freebsd.org", Issuer "R13" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4cjpDg1kVTz3L5P; Fri, 10 Oct 2025 13:56:03 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from olce@freebsd.org) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1760104563; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=IsFcGhd5XaRciTY8W8HetJRTpMLoHBEZCl9o74row0Q=; b=h2ZEA/vOSSy9W8s1YUZ6WV4IFSg/q3b/aQAQu5WITMuFnzXSd7Rl7KqRSCQ76Gs9kqYBlA +V7qEPalWhUtCV6vh62XztTjCtWoOsOS5GnsKhv7u5/veShTBY9V/p2AZFIhRQ0fmNjzBs ysJyGatfZasrtkGX/pnWTjnbNFiHsUeBw+JacypIzXiv1i7oYTpYQMfDLs+EpblD2JZKcM ir6frHhwrXSkL/HjqZOe8lkDACNCRoZLQVwfgGlidXhbk2REyYMqO+RReFdP3HZpyeGGB1 gzwS6utLs0ik192UjaolGTbjDoPKFd3Vg1Fg34oJSaN0MeHmmGJvLt7RqFGNgg== ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1760104563; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=IsFcGhd5XaRciTY8W8HetJRTpMLoHBEZCl9o74row0Q=; b=dAN1UfZps+byxlazLs+0O7lZDDJBJCc+OpCNcdYfeSfG18PHcz+HLDAvXqT2KKJR4LgRqI 7Ml8rGW/IjIhgZbC/yKtueSAltq+CY5w38kGjP/Xr7bVu0ISxSWriJX4ou2euhCvUCJJeZ r/i9TbFW2JfMyAaIxokbCcGrrlkCa75mgJmazW8n2FGQxlVkQvyM90hI62XB1owhWAeTR8 sMvTx/QcFT9v8Kc8BlebKtrnv/vQk+oI311TFaMDjj0nZw+a0xQaYn3eL25aWF8Ff9WxFq mMzed0VWilDqmHIj8J/HaoWJ4ksVZduitPV/6ES7yOI8YvLgx/xtGM3BJLbjEQ== ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1760104563; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=NhZRBpTjxLrykf7fhLjSwONNTWomG6e2Qs01m7p4n7QY14IbTbzK0sTnRlwQ517hLSLcj8 K1XWZ/uduQ/xxcduNfyz2CGwWgqitQtmijploWu0wlzlDv1Bekp78YngQxuk1BUO6wqXRV Kgd6AUGKczqLeJHuGVC6GD3ErI28VSUpFGOyUYb6J5J3fM+tLtzevBuRzU78uGohmYddL0 P05SYMJWFN4AtcwemHwGkcHeGocMY4Xr4R8ItZp5YrYyIV/IErdaZZmFMzBMnltDYwZrpd s9Rs7g/8SkRIQkC+kzRft5M2/5IeXZ+SrJuEA0Ja3wNwzwFXojJZRE3tEcbBLg== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from ravel.localnet (aclermont-ferrand-653-1-222-123.w90-14.abo.wanadoo.fr [90.14.66.123]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) (Authenticated sender: olce/mail) by smtp.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPSA id 4cjpDf5qf4z116R; Fri, 10 Oct 2025 13:56:02 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from olce@freebsd.org) From: Olivier Certner To: Mark Millard Cc: freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Subject: Re: FYI: 15stable-amd64-quarterly has had 2 successful builds, despite not being distributed yet Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:55:55 +0200 Message-ID: <2468720.gG0HsuGxDd@ravel> In-Reply-To: References: <6109335.Zv9zXsTiuT@ravel> List-Id: Binary package management and package tools discussion List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-pkg List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-pkg@FreeBSD.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; boundary="nextPart2105173.n1Ql7ez4OO"; micalg="pgp-sha384"; protocol="application/pgp-signature" --nextPart2105173.n1Ql7ez4OO Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"; protected-headers="v1" From: Olivier Certner To: Mark Millard Cc: freebsd-pkg@freebsd.org Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2025 15:55:55 +0200 Message-ID: <2468720.gG0HsuGxDd@ravel> In-Reply-To: MIME-Version: 1.0 > I like "Total" for the above. Great. > Are you suggesting to change the content of the that list > and the whole page to make no reference to the "scope > of the build" information (no count, no list for such)? We should probably keep it, as it has (like all the other lists on the page) a search box that can be used to determine quickly if a package was supposed to be addressed. Adding a status column to that list would be useful. It would say either: - "Up-to-date" in case of an incremental build and the package already exists. - Any of the already existing statuses ("Built", "Failed", "Skipped", "Ignored", "Fetched", "Remaining"). With this, users can jump to the relevant status-specific table and consult the additional columns there (such as Log) for a specific port. This makes it easier to find the fate of a specific package by not having to search in all tables. We can then imagine refinements (a link automatically filling the search box of the right table and jumping to it), but already just having the status info seems valuable. > Are you suggesting that the list should only list the > port-packages that are in the "Total" and, so, that > the "entries" figure would have the same value as > "Total"? No. And, if we add the status column as evoked above, I don't think there is a need to even add this list of non-up-to-date packages as a separate section. > (Calling the items ports when a port can define multiple packages > and pacakges are what is built is odd these > days --and has been for a long time.) If you view a port as an origin + a flavor, there's still a 1:1 correspondence, but that doesn't seem to be the common acceptation for a "port" and could be considered a stretch of the mind. That's why using "packages" seems preferable to using "ports". Not too sure if saying "port-packages" is better, as it might cause more confusion. > So if the "scope of the build" information is > kept, I expect that its terminology should be > changed to avoid ambiguity. > > I could imagine having lists and figures for > both: > > ) "Total's port-packages" > and: > ) "All port-packages" I really think these two terminologies are too close and thus confusing (why would the "Total" and "All" numbers differ? that's really unintuitive). "Build scope" seems much better (further improvements welcome). > Note: > If I understand right, such may well be changes to > how poudriere works for providing html pages. All these changes are cosmetic except the new status column in the "Build scope" (or whatever) list. That specific change is anyway a nice-to-have and could be done separately in a second step once the existing names are fixed, which really is the priority. We can then imagine refinements (a link = automatically filling the search box of the right table and jumping to = it), but already just having the status info seems valuable. Official builds are probably almost always "bulk -a" or "bulk -ca" instead of a more specific list, leading to the Queued Ports "Reason" column then saying "listed" for everything and all port-packages to be considered for further classification. In other cases, the Queued Ports list could be smaller. And that makes another reason for use of "All . . ." naming to be inappropriate. Your idea above does involve updating rows of a frequently large table on the fly instead of adding new rows as builds complete. An alternative would be to just have something like "already built at start" and "not yet built at start". That would be more of an up-front, one-time large-table build. That could make an implementation more likely to happen --or happen sooner than the above, possibly forming a separate step in a sequence of updates. The first submittal is: https://github.com/freebsd/poudriere/issues/1264 and sticks to the simpler, more-static extra column --and only as an optional thing going with the rename to "Build scope" (instead of "Queued Ports"). It may be a bit before I submit anything for the dynamic table update idea that would have more detailed information. >> Are you suggesting that the list should only list the >> port-packages that are in the "Total" and, so, that >> the "entries" figure would have the same value as >> "Total"? >=20 > No. And, if we add the status column as evoked above, I don't think = there is a need to even add this list of non-up-to-date packages as a = separate section. Okay. >> (Calling the items ports when a port can define multiple packages >> and pacakges are what is built is odd these >> days --and has been for a long time.) >=20 > If you view a port as an origin + a flavor, there's still a 1:1 = correspondence, but that doesn't seem to be the common acceptation for a = "port" and could be considered a stretch of the mind. That's why using = "packages" seems preferable to using "ports". Not too sure if saying = "port-packages" is better, as it might cause more confusion. I listed "port-packages" because there are now also "base-packages" and pkg has established a repeatedly-used context where just "packages" (a mix of both types) are handled without distinctions when pkgbase is also in use --and this has lead to some confusions of its own that I've observed. So I'm personally biased to be explicit whenever only one of the 2 types is involved/relevant. (Not the same as everything needing to follow my convention for dealing with the issues.) >> So if the "scope of the build" information is >> kept, I expect that its terminology should be >> changed to avoid ambiguity. >>=20 >> I could imagine having lists and figures for >> both: >>=20 >> ) "Total's port-packages" >> and: >> ) "All port-packages" >=20 > I really think these two terminologies are too close and thus = confusing (why would the "Total" and "All" numbers differ? that's really = unintuitive). "Build scope" seems much better (further improvements = welcome). See earlier above about my own reason for "All port-packages" to be inappropriate. Okay. "Build scope" is what I referenced in: https://github.com/freebsd/poudriere/issues/1264 >> Note: >> If I understand right, such may well be changes to >> how poudriere works for providing html pages. I looked around and found that the build-details page is from poudriere output during the build (poudriere-devel context example): # grep -r "card-body" = /usr/local/poudriere/data/logs/bulk/.html/build.html=20 /usr/local/poudriere/data/logs/bulk/.html/build.html: =

(While I do personal poudriere-devel builds, I do not use the web page interface for my own builds, just for monitoring the official FreeBSD build activity. So this was not familiar.) > All these changes are cosmetic except the new status column in the = "Build scope" (or whatever) list. That specific change is anyway a = nice-to-have and could be done separately in a second step once the = existing names are fixed, which really is the priority. >=20 Sounds like separate submittals against poudriere on FreeBSD's github.
