Basically ports depend on kf* ports should NOT switch to Qt6 until KDE5 is remaining as defaut KDE on FreeBSD. The exceptions would be: *KDE6 ports themselves, *Security fix is available only for KF6 versions upstream. Unless the second reason, if upstream stops support building with kf5, ports should be stick with currently in-tree version and wait for KDE6 to be default on ports. This is because some kf6 ports conflict with their kf5 versions. For ports not at all depends on kf6 but qt6, it seems to be OK to coexsist with KDE5, as far as I've experienced. And not all kf6 ports conflict with kf5 versions. I know it's just a dream regarding human resources, but if kf5 ports and corresponding kf6 ports are completely separated and named differently (i.e., all files for kf5 include "kf5-" or "-kf5" and all files for kf6 includes "kf6-" or "-kf6" to avoid conflicts), this kind of problems wouldn't happen, as dependencies need to explicitly specify which to use. Unfortunately, forcible switches to kf6 would happen more and more as of upstream switches and unavailabilities of security updates for kf5 variants. > > … > root@mowa219-gjp4-zbook-freebsd:~# time pkg -r /tmp/up upgrade --yes > --fetch-only --quiet --repository FreeBSD-ports > Conflicts with the existing packages have been found. > One more solver iteration is needed to resolve them. > 27.438u 3.826s 2:09.57 24.1% 3196+537k 829+2293io 1080pf+0w > root@mowa219-gjp4-zbook-freebsd:~# time pkg -r /tmp/up upgrade --yes > --fetch-only --repository FreeBSD-ports > Updating FreeBSD-ports repository catalogue... > FreeBSD-ports repository is up to date. > All repositories are up to date. > Checking for upgrades (22 candidates): 100% > Processing candidates (22 candidates): 100% > Checking integrity... done (3 conflicting) > - kf6-kguiaddons-6.9.0 [FreeBSD-ports] conflicts with > kf5-kguiaddons-5.116.0 [installed] on /usr/local/bin/kde-geo-uri-handler > - kf6-kguiaddons-6.9.0 [FreeBSD-ports] conflicts with > kf5-kguiaddons-5.116.0 [FreeBSD-ports] on /usr/local/bin/kde-geo-uri-handler > - kf6-breeze-icons-6.9.0 [FreeBSD-ports] conflicts with > kf5-breeze-icons-5.116.0 [installed] on > /usr/local/share/icons/breeze-dark/actions/12/object-fill.svg > Checking integrity... done (0 conflicting) > The following 278 package(s) will be affected (of 0 checked): > Installed packages to be REMOVED: > … > Number of packages to be removed: 252 > … -- Tomoaki AOKI From nobody Wed Jan 1 18:50:50 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-ports@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4YNf706N0Pz5j46M for ; Don't see a good reason to force everyone to use an old version. Anyway the ports tree is open source, nothing stops anyone from proposing (with himself as maintainer) a new port for the old version calling it "ghostwriter-qt5" or whatever. Maybe impossible here, but if kf*-dependencies could be stripped out, keeping qt* dependencies, it would help quite a lot for this kind of transitional periods (including future transitions). Should be just a dream, though. :-( I hope upstream to decide supporting sane coexistence of previous and current kf*. But should be just a dream, too. > > Just my opinion as a user. > > > > Basically ports depend on kf* ports should NOT switch to Qt6 until KDE5 > > is remaining as defaut KDE on FreeBSD. I'm not sure putting VERSION under flavors control is supported/suggested. Would make managing the port quite more complicated anyway. A separate port for the older version would be more reasonable, the name I suggested for such a port it is also suboptimal. The name should have at least an indication this is an old version. Would make managing the port quite more complicated > anyway. Yes. Is complicated. For example, mail/claws-mail is ver. 3.21.0 for Gtk2 and 4.3.0 for Gtk3. This is because upstream is deveoping Gtk2 version on 3.x branch and Gtk3 version on 4.x branch. And here, I've mis-remembered. It was using OPTION, not FLAVOR. https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/tree/mail/claws-mail/Makefile https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/tree/mail/claws-mail/Makefile.claws https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/tree/mail/claws-mail/Makefile.ver But there is no reason (putting aside the complexities like above) that FLAVOR cannot do the same thing, just technically, though. > A separate port for the older version would be more reasonable, the name > I suggested for such a port it is also suboptimal. While technically it would be possible to have separate MAINTAINER values for flavors, it would be quite difficult to draw the lines in relation to responsibilities in case of problems. -- Guido Falsi From nobody Thu Jan 2 13:42:36 2025 X-Original-To: freebsd-ports@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4YP7Dw2hmZz5jDr9 for ; Thu, 02 Jan 2025 13:42:40 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from junchoon@dec.sakura.ne.jp) Received: from www121.sakura.ne.jp (www121.sakura.ne.jp [153.125.133.21]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4YP7Dv5KhCz4LXD; Thu, 2 Jan 2025 13:42:39 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from junchoon@dec.sakura.ne.jp) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from kalamity.joker.local (124-18-43-234.area1a.commufa.jp [124.18.43.234]) (authenticated bits=0) by www121.sakura.ne.jp (8.17.1/8.17.1/[SAKURA-WEB]/20201212) with ESMTPA id 502DgaAd012970; Thu, 2 Jan 2025 22:42:36 +0900 (JST) (envelope-from junchoon@dec.sakura.ne.jp) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=simple/simple; d=dec.sakura.ne.jp; s=s2405; t=1735825357; bh=4bBwlw0y4e3T612H7L2wxLLyUbRN8Q6ckGN5HB00m/0=; h=Date:From:To:Cc:Subject:In-Reply-To:References; b=QbuafZGwZLYPAXtlPPXmf6inkuNRiDIpblOpmSRKrt7zB29rxmJIIP+4t6FzmJDwr XiLRf3T9cZc6WKSTPdkL06Wf+4uGH0FR/U8vhbiRrVX4DXH8WIt13oHYnKM49Kn5VX KOHxSGtTr7L1JFsqZPp0gRBZLBn0FkdzLwmZq7HQ= Date: Thu, 2 Jan 2025 22:42:36 +0900 From: Tomoaki AOKI To: Guido Falsi Cc: Graham Perrin , ports-list freebsd Subject: Re: editors/ghostwriter 24.12.0 versus x11/kde5 Message-Id: <20250102224236.a8a6922e4ad278d936713850@dec.sakura.ne.jp> In-Reply-To: References: <20250102015351.9fdbbf3dd4142d6d6c783060@dec.sakura.ne.jp> <20250102093845.f1dfd723ac310e0b18bf7074@dec.sakura.ne.jp> <20250102215721.520d809cdec040ff64233950@dec.sakura.ne.jp> Organization: Junchoon corps X-Mailer: Sylpheed 3.7.0 (GTK+ 2.24.33; amd64-portbld-freebsd14.1) List-Id: Porting software to FreeBSD List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-ports List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-BeenThere: freebsd-ports@freebsd.org Sender: owner-freebsd-ports@FreeBSD.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4YP7Dv5KhCz4LXD X-Spamd-Bar: ---- X-Rspamd-Pre-Result: action=no action; module=replies; Message is reply to one we originated X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-4.00 / 15.00]; REPLY(-4.00)[]; ASN(0.00)[asn:7684, ipnet:153.125.128.0/18, country:JP] On Thu, 2 Jan 2025 14:05:23 +0100 Guido Falsi wrote: > On 02/01/25 13:57, Tomoaki AOKI wrote: > > On Thu, 2 Jan 2025 08:41:27 +0100 > > Guido Falsi wrote: > > > >> On 02/01/25 01:38, Tomoaki AOKI wrote: > >>> On Wed, 1 Jan 2025 19:50:50 +0100 > >>> Guido Falsi wrote: > >>> > >>>> Don't see a good reason to force everyone to use an old version. > >>>> > >>>> Anyway the ports tree is open source, nothing stops anyone from > >>>> proposing (with himself as maintainer) a new port for the old version > >>>> calling it "ghostwriter-qt5" or whatever. > >>> > >>> Or flavorizing with qt5/kf5 version alone stick with latest possible > >>> (older than ones for qt6/kf6) version until KDE6 becomes default > >>> on ports. > >> > >> I'm not sure putting VERSION under flavors control is > >> supported/suggested. Agreed. I don't intend to force anyone anything. Just proposing different possibilities for the future (in mail archives to be searched). This is mostly because I've wondered which way to go, whether any better way exist or not, when I've filed Bug 276165 [1]. There was multiple ways to go, each had Pros and Cons, and finally chosen the one I've filed. Anyway, I'm currently not using editors/ghostwriter (as I don't want any ports depending on www/qt[5|6]-webengine to be newly installed), so doing fork or not would be on whom actually want to do and maintain. And why I've popped in this discussion is because I've lost qterminal as of conflicts (I've overlooked the switch to qt6 and addition of kf6 dependencies, thus, missed to lock it. And reverting after that could cause new dependency hell). I've switched back to x11/mate-terminal now, as I've found the workaround when it failed to build. Hi,

Some, but not all python ports spend a long time in building eggs

Ex :

running egg_info
writing src/charset_normalizer.egg-info/PKG-INFO
writing dependency_links to src/charset_normalizer.egg-info/dependency_links.txt
writing entry points to src/charset_normalizer.egg-info/entry_points.txt
writing requirements to src/charset_normalizer.egg-info/requires.txt
writing top-level names to src/charset_normalizer.egg-info/top_level.txt

pstree -w shows :

| |               \-+- 64353 root /usr/local/bin/python3.11 -m build --no-isolation --wheel
| |                 \-+- 64468 root /usr/local/bin/python3.11 /usr/local/lib/python3.11/site-packages/pyproject_hooks/_in_process/_in_process.py build_wheel /tmp/tmptnbyl41r
| |                   \--- 64471 root git archive --prefix /usr/ports/ HEAD

What is the purpose of git archive ?

Regards,

Xavier

There is no invocation of "git archive" in /usr/ports/Mk/Uses/py* Python port mechanism, in fact neither in the whole subtree of /usr/ports/Mk. Which means this is not ports that make use of it, but rather upstream tooling. I want to add flavors support to sysutils/vimpager but i am unable=20 to do it. I need to use x11 flavor of editors/vim because I need=20 clipboard support which isn't available in console (default) flavor of=20 editors/vim. What I want to do is, When I install vimpager's x11 or any=20 other flavor of vimpager, it should pick up editors/vim's x11 flavor,=20 not console flavor. Currently, it doesn't work that way, it only picks=20 up editors/vim console flavor. So, both flavors of editors/vim and=20 sysutils/vimpager should match to each other. I don't know if it's=20 possible but I guess it is. Any help appreciated, thanks in advance and=20 happy new year! AFACT there isn't a good path to remove it entierly due to dependencies in lang/ghc810 and lang/ghc92 (at least on armv7 and maybe aarch64). For now I've put together a set of patches to remove other references to it in ports and in the USES framework and then slim it down to just building the LLVM core which is what I think GHC needs. Those patches are at https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-ports/pull/337 I've CC'd maintainers of everything I've touched. I'm willing to submit them another way if that is prefered, but this rolls them all up in one place and most are trivial. Please let me know what you'd like me to do about the various patches. This interacts badly with the port build process. Fortunately there is already a fix: commit deb79782a9b87c64d06441e4bf67e46bf19c45c3 Author: Robert Clausecker Date: Sat Nov 30 14:35:18 2024 +0100 in the ports tree sets GIT_CEILING_DIRS to prevent this problem. Presumably you're installing from a ports tree that does not yet have this fix in it. See also https://reviews.freebsd.org/D47850 -- and if you do have this commit, let us know that something isn't working here.
