The biggest problem I'm seeing right now is disk performance. I built the VM on a 200gig LUN mapped from a Dell MD5. This disk happened to show up as /dev/ada0 and was installed with ZFS on Root. After rebooting I added some more LUNs and put ZFS on them. These disks happen to show up with /dev/xbd# as Xen seems to be being detected after the reboot. Doing a simple performance test with dd ( if=/dev/zero of=file bs=1m ) on anything with a /dev/ada# entry I get a transfer rate of something around 6777 MB/s. Doing the same test on a device that is /dev/xbd# I get around half that. If I fight a bit and disable xenguest and get one of the "newer" LUNs over to a /dev/ada# device the performance goes up into the 6777 MB/s range. I figure I'm doing something wrong here but docs seem to be sparse on this and Vates doesn't fully support FreeBSD so its a YMMV sorta thing. Any suggestions? Thanks. -Tom -- -------------------------------------------------------------------- - Tom Arnold - "...is it a virus, a drug, or a religion?" - Sysabend Caretaker - Juanita Shrugs. It's not obvious from the vmm's perspective that the exceptions are because the guest is expecting a newer = CPU. Note that you would get the same behavior if you were booting that ISO on t= he bare metal. It's really up to the boot loader on the ISO to notice and emi= t a warning if it chooses. Given that, I do think bhyve/vmm is working "correc= tly" and that this should be closed. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jul 25 19:18:30 2025 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bpd2G73Pnz62Dv7 for ; If this set is not supported by host or turned off for the guest, vmm can issue a diagnostic. The amount of work and maintenance efforts needed for such functionality is enormous for very specific use case. But it is doable, and really not that complicated. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sun Jul 27 21:15:44 2025 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4bqvXd6Nwmz637Sf for ; Each file in a 9p share has a unique 64-bit identifier, the QID, and our lib9p just sets qid =3D st_ino. Of course, inode numbers are not unique across datasets, so aliases arise, and this violates some invariants of p9f= s. It looks like QEMU has an option which lets one work around this problem by dynamically remapping host inode numbers to provide unique QIDs, at the cos= t of some overhead and the lack of a guarantee that it always work. (This is "multidevs=3Dremap".) For 15.0 it seems best to simply disallow exporting anything under a mountpoint. That is, if a walk or readdir encounters a file belonging to a different host mountpoint, the 9p server should either hide it or generate = an error. That's a bit inconvenient, but it's a bit easier to implement and i= t's the safest option. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.=
