The host's xHCI Controller is passed through to the VM. Attached to one of the USB ports is a Zigbee USB dongle. After upgrading from 14.3 to 15.0 the guest sees the controller but no device attached. `lsusb` hangs forever. Also nothing visible when I remove and re-plug the USB dongle. When I boot the 14.3 boot environment everything is working fine again. === Host === # dmesg | grep ^CPU CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6500T CPU @ 2.50GHz (2500.00-MHz K8-class CPU) # pciconf -lv | grep -A4 ppt0 ppt0@pci0:0:20:0: class=0x0c0330 rev=0x00 hdr=0x00 vendor=0x8086 device=0xa2af subvendor=0x103c subdevice=0x829a vendor = 'Intel Corporation' device = '200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI Controller' class = serial bus subclass = USB # grep ppt /boot/loader.conf pptdevs="0/20/0" # vm passthru DEVICE BHYVE ID READY DESCRIPTION hostb0 0/0/0 No Xeon E3-1200 v5/E3-1500 v5/6th Gen Core Processor Host Bridge/DRAM Registers vgapci0 0/2/0 No HD Graphics 530 ppt0 0/20/0 Yes 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family USB 3.0 xHCI Controller none0 0/20/2 No 200 Series PCH Thermal Subsystem ahci0 0/23/0 No 200 Series PCH SATA controller [AHCI mode] pcib1 0/29/0 No 200 Series PCH PCI Express Root Port isab0 0/31/0 No 200 Series PCH LPC Controller (Q270) none1 0/31/2 No 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family Power Management Controller hdac0 0/31/3 No 200 Series PCH HD Audio ichsmb0 0/31/4 No 200 Series/Z370 Chipset Family SMBus Controller em0 0/31/6 No Ethernet Connection (5) I219-LM nvme0 1/0/0 No P1 NVMe PCIe SSD[Frampton2] # EDITOR=cat vm configure hass loader="uefi" cpu="4" memory="4GB" network0_type="virtio-net" network0_switch="public" disk0_type="nvme" disk0_name="disk0.img" grub_run_partition="1" grub_run_dir="/boot/grub" uuid="c7e9304c-b67c-11ef-abe6-ace2d30101d0" network0_mac="58:9c:fc:0d:39:fe" #passthru0="0/20/0=2:0" # that was in the config @14.3 passthru0="0/20/0" # tried changing it to this. no luck === Guest === [core-ssh ~]$ dmesg | grep -i usb [ 0.629838] ACPI: bus type USB registered [ 0.631733] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs [ 0.632723] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub [ 0.633722] usbcore: registered new device driver usb [ 0.890288] xhci_hcd 0000:00:06.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 [ 0.897560] xhci_hcd 0000:00:06.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 2 [ 0.898847] xhci_hcd 0000:00:06.0: Host supports USB 3.0 SuperSpeed [ 0.899975] usb usb1: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002, bcdDevice= 6.12 [ 0.901400] usb usb1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [ 0.902661] usb usb1: Product: xHCI Host Controller [ 0.903541] usb usb1: Manufacturer: Linux 6.12.51-haos xhci-hcd [ 0.904583] usb usb1: SerialNumber: 0000:00:06.0 [ 0.905573] hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found [ 0.907346] usb usb2: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0003, bcdDevice= 6.12 [ 0.908753] usb usb2: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2, SerialNumber=1 [ 0.910003] usb usb2: Product: xHCI Host Controller [ 0.910859] usb usb2: Manufacturer: Linux 6.12.51-haos xhci-hcd [ 0.911893] usb usb2: SerialNumber: 0000:00:06.0 [ 0.912933] hub 2-0:1.0: USB hub found [ 0.914673] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp [ 0.915660] usbcore: registered new interface driver usb-storage [ 0.916739] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic [ 0.917938] usbserial: USB Serial support registered for generic [ 0.936652] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbhid [ 0.937820] usbhid: USB HID core driver $ lsusb [hangs] $ ls /dev/serial ls: /dev/serial: No such file or directory From nobody Thu Dec 4 14:30:53 2025 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dMcPT3tNRz6J8ZX for ; The xHCI device is detected inside the Linux guest (Home Assistant OS), but= USB enumeration fails and the controller becomes unresponsive. No USB devices appear (no /dev/ttyUSB*, /dev/ttyACM*, etc.) even when directly attached to= the PCI card. This configuration worked previously on FreeBSD 14.x on the same hardware. I suspect this is related to recent changes involving bhyve PCI/USB/xHCI handling in FreeBSD 15, as the controller fails at the moment the guest tri= es to issue commands/drain the command ring. Installing it on a 14.3-stable host works and the resulting VM works on 15. The failed install appears to die prior to openbsd loading (in EFI?). I observed the same thing on 9front. install78.iso fails on both 14 and 15 = in the same way. 2. netbsd 10.1 crashes every time on 15. Running the same VM on 14 works flawlessly. I did not try installing netbsd from scratch. Others have reported issues with ubuntu, debian etc. on the freebsd forum. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sat Dec 6 16:03:50 2025 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dNtMq21tFz6HhSx for ; Running the same VM on 14 works Interesting, I was able to boot 10.1 to the installer on FreeBSD 16.0-CURRE= NT #0 main-n282278-639e65144aa7. Were you seeing the same abort from this bug report? Did it occur at initial boot the same as 9front? For 9front, I was able to get past the abort on 16-current and 15.0 by reverting this commit and recompiling bhyve. commit fb51ddb20d57a43d666508e600af1bc7ac85c4e8 bhyve: increase fbuf display resolution limit https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-src/commit/fb51ddb20d57a43d666508e600af1= bc7ac85c4e8 This changes the PCI frame buffer memory configuration back to what was use= d in FreeBSD 14 and as such does not overlap with another device to cause the ab= ort. This is just a workaround as I think there is fundamentally a different iss= ue causing the overlap/abort. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sat Dec 6 17:32:32 2025 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dNwLB0BYMz6HqS7 for ; I have to clarify what is this VM. It's a pfSense = one, version 2.7.2-RELEASE (so, not up-to-date but that's not important). I don't use vm-bhyve, just bhyve command line. The realtek NIC is set for DHCP, it's the "wan" side for the pfSense VM. There is something random in this regression as most of the time, the NIC doesn't get an ip, but not always (I saw that with numerous tries to stop a= nd restart the VM). Often, I have no connectivity despite it has a valid ip address, but in some occasions all seems to properly function. What I've seen in the dmesg of the pfSense VM is, when it fails: SRAT: Ignoring memory at addr 0xff000000 SRAT: Ignoring memory at addr 0xffc84000 I don't know if it's relevant. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sun Dec 7 13:58:25 2025 X-Original-To: virtualization@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dPRXg1sdYz6KTJT for ;
