However, on 15.x there is currently no supported/public i386 pkg repository= (or replacement mechanism) for installing the 32-bit ports userland needed by pkg32-based workflows (e.g., Wine/Proton + Steam use-cases that require 32-= bit libs). As a result, workflows that previously relied on pkg32.sh (installing i386 packages alongside amd64) cannot be satisfied from official infrastructure = on 15.x. Context / Why this matters -------------------------- A common =E2=80=9Ccompat=E2=80=9D use-case on amd64 is running 32-bit Windo= ws games via Wine/Proton. Even when the kernel can run 32-bit binaries, users still need= a way to obtain 32-bit libraries from ports (and their dependencies). pkg32.sh historically provided a practical workflow by consuming i386 package repositories. Problem ------- - On FreeBSD 15.x, official i386 package repositories are missing/insuffici= ent for pkg32 usage. - In particular, quarterly repositories for FreeBSD:15:i386 are not availab= le, which makes pkg32 workflows brittle or impossible for stable users. This has been discussed publicly (see references below). References ---------- 1) FreeBSD 15.0 announcement states 32-bit platforms are removed from 15.0 release images while 32-bit binary execution on 64-bit remains expected. (freebsd-announce, Feb 2024) 2) freebsd-current discussion indicates FreeBSD:15:i386 quarterly repo not present / only latest exists, and highlights the practical impact for users relying on i386 packages. 1) https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-announce/2024-February/000117.ht= ml 2) https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-current/2025-October/009182.h= tml Workaround (current) -------------------- A temporary workaround is: 1) Create a poudriere jail for 14.3-RELEASE i386 2) Bulk build required i386 packages there 3) Inject that repository into pkg32.sh, including ABI configuration However, this workaround is fragile long-term: - Versions/toolchains/ports drift - The longer 15.x evolves, the greater the risk of ABI/API mismatch or miss= ing features for building modern ports on a 14.x i386 environment. Questions / Request ------------------- 1) What is the *supported* approach for obtaining/installing 32-bit ports libraries on FreeBSD 15.x amd64 for compatibility use-cases (pkg32/Wine/Ste= am)? 2) Is there a plan to keep publishing i386 packages (even if 15.x does not = ship i386 release images), or to provide an alternative repo specifically for =E2=80=9Ccompat/ports i386 on amd64=E2=80=9D? 3) If the answer is =E2=80=9Cno,=E2=80=9D could this be documented explicit= ly (and potentially pkg32.sh adjusted / deprecated on 15.x with guidance)? Impact ------ This impacts the ability to run 32-bit Windows software on FreeBSD via Wine/Proton, which is a major =E2=80=9Cdesktop adoption=E2=80=9D friction p= oint. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From nobody Mon Dec 29 14:43:17 2025 X-Original-To: pkg@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dfzVG0Pvqz6LtBc for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:43:18 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R13" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4dfzVF6cDYz3rkp for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:43:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1767019397; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=xDwU63awrnmzAl8ggAp5F9Oy5t4MuzHREul4Nvia6RM=; b=g7DuBo8GZzofaUq4qlNvYlzCL+MgDN2v6xQGyJcTThBY07ImG2iVDOoc1tdrP9V0MQNNLC DBdoWpiUe9xUjqiat/47x8f73G4uvEMwZQ5wKwOKofGwrD6oyBR0di061wJZY98+DGXE9O uvWoHjyIOwza9qLYbqAF8jogk8GY6mqy14cYm0JzMGBrsyd4s4HXzMV0tojaaBtBUkVhM0 o168mBCerkDx9t16Au6zS/zndX/bMR8vsOcgbuuEiW1DvZgiU8Xi6XQ8R3r1GiQoMoQJdo mKigqL1EZ24z4GtvEJw30PGG+aJ+/9qlI3tsy13xk/liGD/bIEaok4j/AtR89Q== ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1767019397; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=xDwU63awrnmzAl8ggAp5F9Oy5t4MuzHREul4Nvia6RM=; b=n6DI9PFmWU5Bjv9hzYejJnERnnjhw3YxxaEvv6i2vtAnyvZ5WZvsdk2jF6YWIIWcFc/5l+ EkiSxm5bkbK/YVTa4FZtkR2UmHhpqO15nlxhXKsl64DE6BIamnlHfO3xus2fpFgXXybtqt cN1oGDonwIijdQgzH9wNuv2eIkg3iZZE1ISrqPwRQ5EEBaLkxNrwd39mv082eW5Z33s/lt Wias8bqD9nfPAbx6pEIXRAkzsnqhjGM1Ju8mSKio5J/jZQHoTsV4Kh9RpFO0xMj9JyBdHj 4GHUKkThXfnbnNKlpfVNMoWaXdQlcwCoVyJXklAa/UhlVFQMg2YAkWGuqX3Tkg== ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1767019397; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=wfbLcesBUQEIa3qR7FuTczRAoOKBwkJ6kcETq8f87eFMLYpg18gwD5oEwh+ceKh28Elors 2Bnriy9A7yK9KzQ5cE/wcvXb8lB6Ws0abce0w4IeyAcm5cQYK5OuvS8SgOEkwBAHtqaWr3 I+Adnwo7xDGGlUiDNHcsbRiudXwya3Gr8uDoTymfPI6LacrBk6EFO2E231NhzIm+yZ91tz 5o0yCQ7VaVvCGiRvNaDMWL/bTt0WZ4pLPdn7UIuJeBGiYHeadcL/0/Y94bKfz+Dx/DJ4sG E/roHSrYJIn69TZYpUa9X6iPFYOHZI48z5QqVDswLZDS1B1/Ta4dFtLLah8Vgw== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4dfzVF6Cccz3hQ for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:43:17 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 5BTEhHLa056964 for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:43:17 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 5BTEhHSG056963 for pkg@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:43:17 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: pkg@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 292017] emulators/wine-proton: No supported path for i386 packages on 15.x breaks pkg32 compatibility Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2025 14:43:17 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Ports & Packages X-Bugzilla-Component: Individual Port(s) X-Bugzilla-Version: Latest X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: marklmi26-fbsd@yahoo.com X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: ports-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: maintainer-feedback? maintainer-feedback? That is, for: https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:15:i386/ latest last updated on: 2025-Sep-12 06:55 That is for 15.0-CURRENT , not 15.0-RELEASE , and is not supported, even though it has not been deleted. The most recent for kmods and base updated on: 2025-Dec-07 00:03 The fact that a poudriere jail for 14.3-RELEASE i386 works is an example of what =E2=80=9C32-bit binary execution on 64-bit remains expected=E2=80=9D refers to. It allows running what is still supported: 14.* and 13.5 world code. chroot and jail usage allow running such old world code: the poudriere jails referenced are doing that, for example. In a 14.3 chroot or jail, one can install 14.3 packages and use them. The supported packages remain available in such supported contexts. At least, that is my understanding. It is the normal, historical status for no longer supported platforms, not something special to i386. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From nobody Mon Dec 29 15:23:30 2025 X-Original-To: pkg@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dg0Ng3TKKz6LwvK for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 15:23:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:3]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256 client-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) client-digest SHA256) (Client CN "mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org", Issuer "R13" (verified OK)) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4dg0Ng0xw7z3w6F for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 15:23:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1767021811; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=2Haf2oBw3ULJvOmk2tfiZZxH22230nGNPTjbLYNvZ5g=; b=pWBOmgaL+QwFKSeTzovlIM7dzHzzfxvNp/YWar2bsoVRMxQg545Pr1QvDYbBV4B4NLD7nH ZtCV+45//z3x7Qu4XJK8A2MzehXbz+FmauleooVE8nadaFOuGu64AA7+ntGuiAfIrhAfEv PPG4zNumE1zhZGLBKqAqYI3b+LX4tfpjfFl8dpTN3eblxEgEKl33ibF6P5tZ5YdHvEZXTT EwMbkbm4cItBI4fkrho9iOjfTj5jJUk6ZFCp4yghfQcyX78pXMMCXTcAJhY8pgWfQMs//h U7gIv2cbqYc82Pm0pU74WPaGPQYJT7sEr1cK8h6pOj0Hz5Z4fTXrCJgpKf5tWQ== ARC-Message-Signature: i=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=freebsd.org; s=dkim; t=1767021811; h=from:from:reply-to:subject:subject:date:date:message-id:message-id: to:to:cc:mime-version:mime-version:content-type:content-type: content-transfer-encoding:content-transfer-encoding: in-reply-to:in-reply-to:references:references; bh=2Haf2oBw3ULJvOmk2tfiZZxH22230nGNPTjbLYNvZ5g=; b=bA2/vx3r+w18Su8IgjIqv0zdbR/mXb9DujKu61kwQlAAmG0US8ghCsehCZWMK3dKxYePa9 82G9cBRY+CwinRXME3naTHvuvqWIyRs8R8zoERNqagL/Dk8KvpCUSBMlQi+19Y6NOWGAcR HG5X/oQNd6sdzkJrh61r67nK49M8B/mT0R596tngDhJydgPhcKg3qLeKORka0WfDdzFrPz ZfKaMcvm+3WmNFLgHlcH1NHE9lIBq7gd9o3uJsxHqxdvITBLHN3Ra3nDFcmxnRhIOAA5j0 XFWYVA9CHU4dXBbDkXMXoVgnlceTcey3ytg0belSSnDbLnVEmAccstLw2tCMNQ== ARC-Seal: i=1; s=dkim; d=freebsd.org; t=1767021811; a=rsa-sha256; cv=none; b=hu9NuMv98xXoAxW9jFV7EAvKPE3dhRGzpD1hfqZIAEZ/SkqMUWEILI0ue3juA1fXQqZk4W 2bUnhvhGRzQiyWER6mvNLumXhnv/LA4mOfcR8Ev2bQe0UWgEwhAXd2uFsYxHYSxIXK39fj wCoj4JWLjei5w9vSyxrVy9iSI4GoKUodeXj5hd5fGuN1Es32ur2kh+3j1KhO07H8GC5/FZ hpQiFnVIU4nR25DXsotMLz4zqbpY/kmu4zXtCHB60OoFN+JiNIZjLa5SheYX98TXS70zg7 xRXpcFILbSGEbRpjZ5JRvZFFbsYlK9gOjbxsCcIgUZRE5CU1m3omRYrl08DFqw== ARC-Authentication-Results: i=1; mx1.freebsd.org; none Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org (kenobi.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::50:1d]) (using TLSv1.3 with cipher TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (256/256 bits) key-exchange X25519 server-signature RSA-PSS (4096 bits) server-digest SHA256) (Client did not present a certificate) by mxrelay.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4dg0Ng0YKSz593 for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 15:23:31 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: from kenobi.freebsd.org ([127.0.1.5]) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2) with ESMTP id 5BTFNU61031169 for ; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 15:23:30 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) Received: (from www@localhost) by kenobi.freebsd.org (8.15.2/8.15.2/Submit) id 5BTFNUL5031168 for pkg@FreeBSD.org; Mon, 29 Dec 2025 15:23:30 GMT (envelope-from bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org) X-Authentication-Warning: kenobi.freebsd.org: www set sender to bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org using -f From: bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org To: pkg@FreeBSD.org Subject: [Bug 292017] emulators/wine-proton: No supported path for i386 packages on 15.x breaks pkg32 compatibility Date: Mon, 29 Dec 2025 15:23:30 +0000 X-Bugzilla-Reason: CC X-Bugzilla-Type: changed X-Bugzilla-Watch-Reason: None X-Bugzilla-Product: Ports & Packages X-Bugzilla-Component: Individual Port(s) X-Bugzilla-Version: Latest X-Bugzilla-Keywords: X-Bugzilla-Severity: Affects Only Me X-Bugzilla-Who: rikka.goering@outlook.de X-Bugzilla-Status: New X-Bugzilla-Resolution: X-Bugzilla-Priority: --- X-Bugzilla-Assigned-To: ports-bugs@FreeBSD.org X-Bugzilla-Flags: maintainer-feedback? maintainer-feedback? Also, managing a mix of 15 and 14 port-packages that update at different times without some form of isolation would have its own issues as far as I can tell. chroot use and jails provide such isolation. Absent such, the FreeBSD OS has never documented using such a mix of multiple official port trees as far as I know. (I make no use of any games, or even of more than console I/O =E2=80=94-nor= systematic use of i386 code. Nor have I ever previously.) You seem to be after a type of support that has no prior analogous example. As far as I can tell pkg32.sh has never had any official status for support. It is part of i386-wine, not of the FreeBSD OS. It is not part of the ports infrastructure either, never pre-supplied, as I understand. You seem to be asking for the FreeBSD OS to take over such support responsibilities and st= art providing official documentation. That would be a very new activity as far as I can tell. Just to clarify my intent: I=E2=80=99m not asking the FreeBSD base system o= r ports infrastructure to =E2=80=9Csupport pkg32.sh=E2=80=9D as an official mechani= sm. My goal with this PR was simply to get orientation on the current state of play: given t= hat FreeBSD 15.x no longer produces i386 packages, is there any known, reasonab= ly maintainable path for desktop users to keep Wine/Proton working for 32-bit Windows titles on amd64? >From the answers so far, it sounds like the currently supported interpretat= ion of =E2=80=9C32-bit execution remains expected=E2=80=9D is: run a supported = i386 world (13.5/14.x) in a chroot/jail, install packages inside that environment, and keep it isolated from the 15.x host userland. If that=E2=80=99s the intende= d/only supported route, that=E2=80=99s totally fair =E2=80=94 but it also means th= at the =E2=80=9Crun 32-bit Windows games via Wine/Proton on 15.x=E2=80=9D story becomes a jail/chroot = recipe, not a simple host-side setup. If that=E2=80=99s correct, I=E2=80=99m happy to help by: - writing or contributing documentation for an =E2=80=9Cofficially recomme= nded=E2=80=9D jail/chroot workflow for this use-case (including graphics/audio caveats), = or - helping test/iterate on a documented recipe so it=E2=80=99s reproducible= for typical desktop users. Also, in hindsight, this probably would have fit better as a mailing list discussion than a Bugzilla PR; apologies if filing it here created noise. If there is a better place to track/route this (Handbook docs issue, FreeBSD Desktop WG, ports docs, etc.), please point me there and I can move the discussion. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From nobody Mon Dec 29 18:10:48 2025 X-Original-To: pkg@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dg45p1SPxz6M7BJ for ; The requirements of pre-built port-tree software need not be involved at all. "run a supported i386 world (13.5/14.x) in a chroot/jail" is over specific for some software but has a range of applicability. November 30, 2028 is when stable/14 support is expected to stop. At around that point the port-package builds for FreeBSD:14:i386 will stop as well. The context you are interested in has a limited lifespan as far as updates to any of the pre-built software go, now a little under 2 years of updates left. Any documentation produced that is specific to managing the updates for the specific example context will be limited to that time frame and then will no longer apply to the specific example context. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From nobody Mon Dec 29 18:12:43 2025 X-Original-To: pkg@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dg47v3rVKz6M7df for ; So the current practical situation seems to be: - FreeBSD 15.x won=E2=80=99t have a supported FreeBSD:15:i386 package feed= , so pkg32-style host-side installs aren=E2=80=99t a supported path. - A 14.x i386 world in a jail/chroot can keep 32-bit userland available for now, but that=E2=80=99s inherently time-limited by 14.x support/EOL and sho= uldn=E2=80=99t be treated as a long-term solution. Given that, the sustainable direction for Wine/Proton on 15.x looks like mo= ving toward the newer WoW64-based approach (as discussed in bug #288475), so that 32-bit Windows titles don=E2=80=99t depend on an i386 ports userland on the= host.
