The official release materials are not supposed to bundle or distribute unsupported/ experimental software generally. One must remember that 14.3 pkgbase was experimental and was never set up to meet all the FreeBSD release criteria for officially supported installations. It does not form a good base for such comparisons. 15.0 is the first release attempting more like the official status for pkgbase. And for 15.0 it is only a Technology Preview --which 14.3 pkgbase was not. 15.0-STABLE is not an official release either and can have unsupported/experimental software (pkgbase in use or not). kernel-generic-mmccam: similar status for that kernel. At least some of your "orphaned: base" list appears to simply be base packages that no long exist because the files were moved to other base packages for 15.0 or the packages were renamed. 14.3 does not have several base packages that 15.0 has because of the reorganization. Tracing things requires tracking the reorganization. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Thu Jan 15 05:35:27 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dsBXH4gX4z6NSNs for ; But in bsdinstall we use the filename FreeBSD-base.conf, ditto for pkgbasify I think in https://github.com/FreeBSDFoundation/pkgbasify/blob/main/pkgbasify.lua#L12-L24 I did a patch for addressing this for the OCI containers, but should we also bring bsdinstall and pkgbasify.lua into line too, at least for 15.0+ ? If so is this errata-worthy, or just wait for 15.0 ? The pac= kage was there for 14.2 -> 14.3 upgrade via pkgbase also. Forgive me if I don't buy that reasoning that it is not built because of the installer. The installer can just ignore it like it does the debug kernel. As for the orphaned packages, other packages get deleted by pkg, so why not these listed ones? Is there some way to tell pkg to go ahead and remove the= m? Just because it is labeled experimental doesn't really mean we should throw= up our hands and say too bad, so sad. We can address the shortcomings and make= it work better. It will only make the future upgrades from 15->16 that much better, too. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 00:14:03 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dsgLz2J7Kz6NPGN for ; Note: I'm not going to challenge freebsd.org folks about why such was done vs. what they say --and have no reason to. I'm just showing below what is actually available from pkgbase for some example contexts. I'm also not getting into other issues. > The installer can just ignore it like it does the debug kernel. Well, for pkgbase . . . [Note: My initial context here is 15.0-STABLE, which has the pkgbase-15 keys area filled in. And, yes, the -aRx use with cp is an odd habit of mine.] Note: FreeBSD-kernel-*-dbg is a package of debug symbols for FreeBSD-kernel-* instead of containing a debug kernel. That will be important for the below evidence but will be supported by the multiple examples of such pairs in 15.0-STABLE and main. A compare/contrast of 15.0-RELEASE vs. 15.0-STABLE as far as what FreeBSD-kernel* packages exists, starting with 15.0-RELEASE: # cat /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD-release.conf=20 FreeBSD-release: { url: "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/${ABI}/base_release_${VERSION_MINOR}", mirror_type: "srv", signature_type: "fingerprints", fingerprints: "/usr/share/keys/pkgbase-15", enabled: yes } FreeBSD-ports-kmods-release: { url: "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/${ABI}/kmods_latest${VERSION_MINOR}", mirror_type: "srv", signature_type: "fingerprints", fingerprints: "/usr/share/keys/pkg", enabled: no } # mkdir -p /usr/obj/DESTDIRs/release-amd64/ # mkdir -p /usr/obj/DESTDIRs/release-amd64/usr/share/keys/ # cp -aRx /usr/share/keys/pkg* /usr/obj/DESTDIRs/release-amd64/usr/share/k= eys/ # env ABI=3DFreeBSD:15:amd64 OSVERSION=3D1500068 pkg-static -r /usr/obj/DESTDIRs/release-amd64 rquery -C -x -rFreeBSD-release %n-%v ^FreeBSD-kernel- FreeBSD-kernel-generic-15.0p1 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-dbg-15.0p1 FreeBSD-kernel-man-15.0 Note: Other than the keys, nothing is installed for 15.0-RELEASE by the above. The rquery is via referencing pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:15:amd64/base_release_0 information: # env ABI=3DFreeBSD:15:amd64 OSVERSION=3D1500068 pkg-static -r /usr/obj/DESTDIRs/release-amd64 repos -e FreeBSD-release FreeBSD-release: {=20 url : "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:15:amd64/base_release_0", enabled : yes, priority : 0, mirror_type : "SRV", signature_type : "FINGERPRINTS", fingerprints : "/usr/share/keys/pkgbase-15" } So: Only one kernel is present to reference. There is no debug kernel to skip/ignore. The below helps establish that by the contrast, especially against main. By contrast for 15.0-STABLE, from such an installation that was booted: # pkg-static rquery -C -x -rFreeBSD-base %n-%v ^FreeBSD-kernel- FreeBSD-kernel-generic-15.snap20260112223854 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-dbg-15.snap20260112223854 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-mmccam-15.snap20260112223854 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-mmccam-dbg-15.snap20260112223854 FreeBSD-kernel-man-15.snap20260112223854 FreeBSD-kernel-minimal-15.snap20260112223854 FreeBSD-kernel-minimal-dbg-15.snap20260112223854 Neither 15.0-RELEASE nor 15.0-STABLE has a debug kernel present. Note: FreeBSD-kernel-*-15.snap* content is different than any FreeBSD-kernel-*-15.0p1 would have been. (I ignore FreeBSD-kernel-man in that statement.) Note: bsdinstall does not support installing 15.0-STABLE or main. As for main, from such an installation that was booted: # pkg-static rquery -C -x -rFreeBSD-base %n-%v ^FreeBSD-kernel- FreeBSD-kernel-generic-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-dbg-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-mmccam-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-mmccam-dbg-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-nodebug-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-generic-nodebug-dbg-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-man-16.snap20260102205234 FreeBSD-kernel-minimal-16.snap20260103091340 FreeBSD-kernel-minimal-dbg-16.snap20260103091340 Note of contrast for main: For 15.0 (STABLE or RELEASE) generic is nodebug by content and a debug kernel package would likely be named as: FreeBSD-kernel-generic-debug (lacking the "no" that main has). --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 01:27:55 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dsj0D0sHSz6NTy4 for ; if you want this, i suggest raising it on the arch@ mailing list to see what people think. personally i'm not strongly opposed to it, but i'm also nerv= ous about providing it as part of the release pkgbase builds until it's "ready", since that implies a certain level of support we might not want to commit t= o. but, if there is consensus on arch@ to add MINIMAL, testing with GENERIC-(NO)DEBUG will make that a lot easier to do. re: bsdinstall, i forgot i fixed the multi-kernels bug already, but it was = late enough in the 15.0 release cycle that we couldn't have changed the kernel we ship anyway. (this doesn't allow selecting the kernel in bsdinstall, it ju= st means it doesn't crash if the repository contains more than one.) > The process that builds 15-STABLE makes the minimal kernel package. the packages for STABLE and CURRENT are built by an individual developer an= d we (releng) aren't involved in that, so the selection of kernels there might differ from what we ship in a release build. > As for the orphaned packages, other packages get deleted by pkg, so why n= ot these listed ones? pkg doesn't normally delete packages on upgrade unless there's a conflict. = in this case, the selection of packages you have installed didn't cause a conflict. > Is there some way to tell pkg to go ahead and remove them? you can list the affected packages with "pkg orphans" and remove them with = "pkg autoremove". aside from scripting that (which would be fairly trivial) i d= on't know of a way to do that automatically, but i'm not an expert on pkg.=20=20 > Just because it is labeled experimental doesn't really mean we should thr= ow up our hands and say too bad, so sad. We can address the shortcomings an= d make it work better. i can assure you that no one is "throwing up their hands". we did a huge amount of work on pkgbase to get it ready for 15.0 release, and that work is continuing to improve it for 16.0 (and maybe 15.1, depending on what we dec= ide to backport). if you'd like to contribute, there are several open reviews = in Phabricator (D54282 and D54542 in particular) related to this, and patches = for other improvements would certainly be welcome. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 06:49:12 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dsr6w2xDMz6Nr3p for ; If you add that = back then MINIMAL should be able to boot and find its filesystems on most hardwa= re that GENERIC also supports. Otherwise you'll have to modify the installer = to add `ufs_load=3Dyes` to loader.conf in the UFS+MINIMAL case, or modify the = loader to automatically preload ufs.ko if the kernel doesn't already contain it and vfs.root.mountfrom is UFS. The latter option would actually be pretty neat, but I don't think the loader currently has any way of inspecting the kernel binary. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 14:50:12 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dt2nw5NX9z6NNjF for ; I was trying to find from where I read ab= out the minimal kernel being part of pkgbase, but I cannot find it right now. I= did not find it by scanning available packages in 14.3. Personally, I think the concept of building the kernel this way is great and hope it becomes more mainstream. It always baffled me why the generic kernel includes modules for things it has built into it already. I'm a little bit confused how the minimal kernel is part of the 14.3 amd64 release packages if the releng team is not including minimal kernel in its builds. Are the 14.3 pkgbase packages also built by others? This kind of information should be more visible because everything is hosted all at one place which makes them look official. I'll try to learn how to use Phabricator to see how I can help. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 18:25:47 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dt7Zg6G7fz6Ndkg for ; That, of itself, is sufficient for pkgbase use with 14.* to be experimental. There are other reasons as well. Think of pkgbase for 14.* as the alpha/beta test version and pkgbase for 15.*'s technology preview(s) (as long as such a status lasts) as the release candidates for the pkgbase infrastructure, including its use for official releases. As for finding the 14.* kernels, that is easy: unlike official 15.0-RELEASE pkgbase, 14.*-RELEASE's pkgbase package files are explorable via https://pkg.freebsd.org/ : 14.3: https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/base_release_3/ https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:i386/base_release_3/ 14.2: https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/base_release_2/ https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:i386/base_release_2/ 14.1: https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/base_release_1/ https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:i386/base_release_1/ 14.0: https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/base_release_0/ https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:i386/base_release_0/ All of those include FreeBSD-kernel-minimal*.pkg files but none of that is via RelEng activity or their ways of working for making releases. All of the above were built much like pkgbase 14.*-STABLE is built and by the same person. If you looks in other: https://pkg.freebsd.org/FreeBSD:14:*/base_release_*/ you will not find any FreeBSD-kernel-minimal*.pkg files last I knew special to amd64 (and its related i386). Note: One has to use pkg commands to explore what pkgbase files exist for 15.0-RELEASE, as far as I know. And for that to produce current information, one has to have implicitly or explicitly done a recent "pkg update" (not necessarily involving a pkg upgrade) with FreeBSD-base (or the older name) Enabled instead of disabled. (That explains why my examples with .snap202601* files names have somewhat older dates: FreeBSD-base was disabled and so the information stayed at the older values.) --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 21:09:58 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dtCD71Q6Nz6Nt4g for ; (snapshots are not the same as a release for the criteria, by the way.) That is a good hint that 15.0-STABLE: pkg query '%m %v' FreeBSD-runtime re@FreeBSD.org 15.snap20260101223705 and main: # pkg query '%m %v' FreeBSD-runtime re@FreeBSD.org 16.snap20260103091340 are just wrong. The *.snap* naming is another hint. There is not even a releng/16.* branch in git existing yet and 15.0-STABLE is based on the stable/15 git branch, not the releng/15.0 git branch. That, in turn, suggests that such output for 14.* and its pkgbase status of being experimental and not supported is also not correctly reflected int any (query or rquery) # pkg query '%m %v' FreeBSD-runtime output. I.e., only for 15.0-RELEASE is such correct output. re@ never does automated twice a day builds and releases. That would like be far off from their criteria for any release. They are always manually involved and not so frequent. pkgbase starts its official re@ status with 15.0-RELEASE releases and updates [-p?] as I understand, not before. And only for -RELEASE[-p?] . --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Fri Jan 16 21:58:28 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dtDJ473sqz6Nx9w for ; There are concepts of the likes of: unofficial (such as personal builds) officially-built-and-distrubted-experiments: not normally built by re and is without the re@ release guarantees even though distributed via freebsd.org official-built-and-distributed-re@-supported-releases: built by re@ with the freebsd guarantees that go with it and referenced in the announcement and release notes accessed via https://www.freebsd.org/releases/ for the release. QUOTE of bapt_at_freebsd.org from what you referenced For releng: - built it in a end less loop and publish straight each time there was chan= ges END QUOTE Well for your interpretation of that vs. mine . . . https://www.freebsd.org/releng/#team reports: QUOTE Primary RE Team (re@FreeBSD.org) : Dave Cottlehuber , Marc Fonvieille , Jake Freeland , Xin Li , Ed Maste , Mahdi Mokhtari , Colin Percival , Muhammad Moinur Rahman , Lexi Winter form the primary release engineering decision-making group. END QUOTE bapt@ by himself is not re@ and does not speak for re@ unless explicitly indicated --and the above that bapt referenced is not what re@ choose to do for its officially announced first release (15.0). As far as I can tell, all 14.* pkgbase build have the overall status: officially-built-and-distrubted-experiments (but not built by/for re@). The same is true for the 15.0-STABLE builds that are based on the stable/15 git branch: they have no re@ guarantee status. Using them is using experimental/developmental software. But they are officially built and distributed (by other than re@). I've been using various officially built experiments for a long time prior to 15.0. But at no time did I expect that any 14.* builds that I used, even those based on a releng/14.* git branch, had an re@ release guarantees based status, given the lack of https://www.freebsd.org/releases/ announcement and release note materials, for example. I never intended my use of "official" terminology to indicate any re@ related status unless such was also explicitly referenced. I prefer to not use personal builds for bug reporting (when I can). So I tried to report bugs shown via the officially built experiments instead, avoiding potential blame of oddities in my personal context. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.= From nobody Sat Jan 17 19:16:33 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4dtmfn723fz6P8Gb for ; In particular: QUOTE Thanks for all the added context. . . . . . . END QUOTE The original submittal was based, in part, on problems identifying re@ vs. not types of official and also for experimental vs. not, including for specific files and base packages. It is not that easy to identify it all. I figured that spreading out the material in other places after this submittal's notes got started would not help as much for anyone referencing the bugzilla entry in the future (or now), however the submittal ends up classified. I also should note that re@ and/or bapt@ or others could well find me wrong in various respects. I'm not part of the freebsd project and if re@ or bapt (or many others that are actually involved for the types of issues at hand) indicate corrections to my notes, believe them instead of me. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.=
