I have always restarted all daemons after an update, and did a reboot when I saw some things updated that I knew needed an reboot (e.g., kernel update). Initially, I'll be cautious an always reboot with the pkg update, until I can get a better understanding of how it works and what is occurring. Thanks again for your excellent assistance. However, if I understand right, modern pkg has gotten better at detecting and reporting conflicts, with an example file as well more of the time, even when the Makefiles are not explicit. > Checking integrity... done (0 conflicting) > Your packages are up to date. > > ========================================== > > > A comment ... > > I dislike seeing the word "conflicting" in the routine commands I run. > > What did I do incorrectly? Looks like no 2 installs conflict with each other. I'm not sure that you did anything incorrectly.Mostly you have -devel installs for gcc* but one of them is not: gcc12-12.4.0_3 [installed] . That comment could be repl= aced by something more like: # To disable any of the known repositories an override of this file should = be made in the # /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos directory and a section for the repo which is no longer wanted # can be created which sets the enabled attribute to no. # If the directory does not exist, it can be created with: # mkdir -p /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos # If the file FreeBSD.conf does not exist therein, an empty file can be cre= ated with: # touch /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf # If the repo we wish to disable is the ports repository, it can be disabled with: # echo "FreeBSD-REPO: { enabled: no }" >> /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf # Likewise, if you wish to enable a repository which is currently disabled, this can # be done with: # echo "FreeBSD-REPO: { enabled: no }" >> /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf # In both the above examples, the word REPO is to be replaced by the name of the # repository. Currently understood repository names are "ports", "ports-kmods", and # "base". # Further information on the content of pkg's configuration files can be fo= und in the # pkg.conf man page which can be read with the command: # man 5 pkg.conf I also wonder if the install scripts should really create a file in /usr/local/etc which is critical to the upgradability of the system. --=20 You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.= From nobody Sun Jun 28 23:35:42 2026 X-Original-To: pkgbase@mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org Received: from mx1.freebsd.org (mx1.freebsd.org [IPv6:2610:1c1:1:606c::19:1]) by mlmmj.nyi.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTP id 4gpQlD6TKpz6jQsm for ; Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:35:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vermaden@interia.pl) Received: from smtpo63.interia.pl (smtpo63.interia.pl [217.74.67.63]) (using TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA256 (128/128 bits)) (Client did not present a certificate) by mx1.freebsd.org (Postfix) with ESMTPS id 4gpQlD1r8Rz3RWY; Sun, 28 Jun 2026 23:35:52 +0000 (UTC) (envelope-from vermaden@interia.pl) Authentication-Results: mx1.freebsd.org; none Date: Mon, 29 Jun 2026 01:35:42 +0200 From: vermaden Subject: Re: [Bug 291501] Users should not be advised to overwrite /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf To: "bugzilla-noreply@freebsd.org" , "pkgbase@FreeBSD.org" X-Mailer: interia.pl/pf09 In-Reply-To: References: X-Originating-IP: 45.148.42.2 Message-Id: List-Id: Packaging the FreeBSD base system List-Archive: https://lists.freebsd.org/archives/freebsd-pkgbase List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: Sender: owner-freebsd-pkgbase@FreeBSD.org List-Id: List-Post: List-Help: List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: List-Owner: Precedence: list MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit DKIM-Signature: v=1; a=rsa-sha256; c=relaxed/relaxed; d=interia.pl; s=dk; t=1782689743; bh=E75S6Zf7mMwdfjiu8uRdbrw/r7JmJOfXrPHQhblkdJQ=; h=Date:From:Subject:To:Message-Id:MIME-Version:Content-Type; b=L+TaeDXcX6sN1+71i6JoZXqHO0iTZbM0j9jJVpJ462HBeQjKQGsJEMVyj7dOHsLES xHBZ5NuIFFUJ9ii17+l3ZF7OhxqKT8Za2gKfwMuipjJlJrNhUaWQ7GprnMgvGsZZHE fLugBZ7UU1wqJt4aUUc4VlbeqtWvqZjTepFZVRvQ= X-Spamd-Result: default: False [-4.00 / 15.00]; REPLY(-4.00)[]; ASN(0.00)[asn:16138, ipnet:217.74.64.0/22, country:PL] X-Rspamd-Queue-Id: 4gpQlD1r8Rz3RWY X-Spamd-Bar: ---- X-Rspamd-Pre-Result: action=no action; module=replies; Message is reply to one we originated Hi. > Users should not be advised to overwrite /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf The stock 'Base System' config is at /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf ... that one should not be modified (officially). Remember that prior to some 2.7.* of pkg the -rREPONAME notation did not work as documented as far as controlling which which repositories are enabled for the specific command instance, including update, upgrade, install, and more not respecting the command line. Last I knew, quarterly was still at 2.6.2 of pkg or something like that. 15.0-RELEASE had FreeBSD-base deliberately disabled by default in /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf . 15.1-RELEASE also can not depend on pkg 2.7.5 or later being in use. I wonder if quarterly should get pkg upgrade, if it has not yet done so. > > Regards, > vermaden > > > -- === Mark Millard marklmi at yahoo.com
