I installed (3 times) FreeBSD 2.0.5 from nutcreeker's CD on my 486DX2/66-ISA machine with 2 AT-Bus Conner 544CP (1st and 2nd) and a hp 2GB SCSI drive (3rd), a NEC CDR511 and a Wangtek 5525ES tape at an Adaptec 1524B, finally an ET4000 from TsengLabs (TurboMegaEVA). (Forgotten anything ? :-) Bug description: * The partition table of my first HD (1st Conner) is garbled after installation of FreeBSD-2.0.5 --- the entry for my ISC-Unix partition is zeroed. * The Extended DOS partition on the 2nd HD is not recognised. The rest of the installation went fine, except for some warning on vt1 that for sd0 the calculated sectors per unit (4000) is different from what the disklabel says (2048). (DOS, ISC, FreeBSD 2.0 see 2048 sec/cyl (64 hd, 32 sec/tr), 2089 cyl.) Finally, I want to remark that it disappointed me that vidcontrol lets one no longer select the shape of the cursor (FreeBSD-2.0: vidcontrol -c 13.16) nor the screen saver (FreeBSD-2.0: vidcontrol -s fade) On the other hand I like FreeBSD very much, since it makes a much more reliable impression to me than LinuxWarelaris :-). This was all done over /dev/cuaa1 - at the time, /dev/cuaa0 was busy with a UUCP connection, dialed out from my host. Then, I started pinging the remote host. After about 30 seconds, all modem traffics stops... then, after about a minute, the ping (which of course, gets no ICMP packets back) at this point begins issueing a message about "No buffer space available." I've appended a 'script' log with the ps -laxw and pstat -t output, as well as a snippet of what I get from ping. The `2' is probably for BIOS drive number 0x82 (the 3rd BIOS drive = the first SCSI drive when there are 2 drives before it in the BIOS drive numbering scheme). Try booting from hd(1,a)/kernel like the prompt says. This only works for the first SCSI drive. Yow! Why is it trying to boot from your CDROM, I wonder? It should be trying to change the root device to sd0a, not sd2a! Are you doing anything especially creative in the installation? I really don't see how this could happen unless you're typing something weird at the boot prompt. I ran into this installing cnews-cr.e on FreeBSD 2.05 release. I was getting cron mail that sendbatches: spacefor: dospacefor no such file or directory. Here is what caused it: In /usr/local/libexec/news/spacefor there is a case statement, and one of the lines has outbound) on it. This line has: . . . arg="/usr/spool/uucp"; . . . and it should be: . . . arg="/var/spool/uucp"; . . . This is the only line in the file that does not use a variable from /usr/local/lib/news/bin/config to handle the pathing. Oops, the number is wrong. It is not before 540MB, it is before 265MB. Any physical partition 2-4 (I would say virtural disks 2-4 to avoid confusion with UNIX partition) if allocated before 240MB, the FreeBSD won't boot from it. I had three types of disks, and they are all 850MB -- Western Digital, Maxtor, and Conner. The physical specs are same: 1654 Cylinders, 63 sec., and 16 heads When I moved FreeBSD to third virtural disk (wd0s3), it actually started at 240MB. After I delete all virtural disks, created a DOS partition on virtural disk 1 (FreeBSD calls it wd0s1) with 240 MB, and created a second virtural disk for FreeBSD. The FreeBSD boots OK. It can boot until the previous partition (virtual disk 1) size reaches 265MB. At this point, the cylinder is under 540. So, is Boot Manager or FreeBSD problem? It looks like a FreeBSD problem. I made wd0s1 for Linux and uses 280 MB space. Then, I created second partiton wd0s2 by using the rest space 537MB. DOS installed on the second partiton boots fine. However, If installing FreeBSD on the second partiton, then it won't boot. That is, FreeBSD cannot boot after 265 MB on a hard disk. The problem is the boot block is not installed correctly. When booting, it still says: "Starting MS-DOS" and hang. There is no more MS-DOS since FreeBSD has installed on the partition. /-------------- Jin Guojun ------------ v ---- Internet: g_jin@lbl.gov ----\ | Imaging & Distributed Computing | Usenet: ucbvax!g_jin@lbl.gov | | Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory | Bitnet: -- | | 50B-2239, Berkeley, CA 94720 - jin%george.lbl.gov@Csa3.LBL.Gov | \--------------------------------------------------------------------------/ P.S. When FreeBSD runs low on memory (vmstat reports ~ 100...150) it simply reboots. Further investigatin with a new kernel, built with config -g and an additional savcore setting, showed up that there is *NO* panic, it simply dies quick. After the reboot you still see ~69k of junk data in the swapfile on the NFS-Server. Perhaps this will give you, or anybody else, some more clues for this bug. A new option (-p) causes morse to send the real thing on the speaker. Two other options control the sending speed (-w) and sidetone frequency (-f). I also extended the set of characters the program understands. Traditional behaviour is a bit different: when taking text from the command line a space character is inserted between argv arguments a space now prints as a blank line (rather than " ...") text lines no longer end with ',' The man page has been modified to document the new ooptions. X.Nm ppt X.Op Ar string ... X.Nm morse X.Op Fl p X.Op Fl w Ar speed X.Op Fl f Ar frequency X.Op Fl s X.Op Ar string ... X.Sh DESCRIPTION XThe commands X.Nm bcd , X.Nm ppt Xand X.Nm morse Xread the given input and reformat it in the form of punched cards, Xpaper tape or morse code respectively. XAcceptable input are command line arguments or the standard input. X.Pp XAvailable option: X.Bl -tag -width flag X.It Fl s XThe X.Fl s Xoption for morse produces dots and dashes rather than words. X.It Fl p XSend morse the real way. This only works if your system has sound Xsupport and if the program understands your audio hardware. X.It Fl w Ar speed XSet the sending speed in words per minute. If not specified the default Xspeed of 20 WPM is used. X.It Fl f Ar frequency XSet the sidetone frequency to something other than the default 600 Hz. X.El X.Pp XThe X.Fl w Xand X.Fl f Xflags only work in conjunction with the X.Fl p Xflag. X.Pp XNot all prosigns have corresponding characters. Use `#' for AS Xand `@' for SK. X.Sh FILES X.Bl -tag -width /dev/speaker -compact X.It Pa /dev/speaker Xspeaker device file X.El X.Sh HISTORY XSound support added by Lyndon Nerenberg (VE7TCP/VE6BBM) . X.Sh BUGS XDoesn't understand European or Asian characters, or the continental Xlandline code. X.Pp XSends a bit slower than it should due to system overhead. Some people Xwould call this a feature.
