Do you mean "if you want libXm to be linked statically"? Or is there a Motif package that comes with only static libXm? My intention was the former, and the reason why I didn't put it in /etc/make.conf was because it won't be useful for many people. Unless you are distributing the packages, you don't need it. And /etc/make.conf is crowded enough as it is. By the way, I really wish you'd send an e-mail before committing in someone else's area. I just committed my fix to /etc/make.conf following a long discussion on the ports (and sometimes current) list, didn't it occurred to you that it might be appropriate to just drop me a note? MOTIFLIB would default to "-L${X11BASE}/lib -lXm" if MOTIF_STATIC is not set, and this should pick up your static libXm just fine if you don't have the dynamic version. MOTIF_STATIC was intended to *force* static libXm when dynamic libXm also existed. Ah, I see. So you have some machines with dynamic libXm and you want the binaries built there to run on machines that don't have the dynamic libXm (it's irrelevant whether you have static libXm on these machines or not), right? That's a really odd setup, since the binaries go to /usr/local/bin or /usr/X11R6/bin, and if that's shared, isn't /usr/X11R6/lib (where the Motif libraries are) also shared among the machines? Or do you have the libraries (and dynamic libs only???) on the local disks of some machines due to licensing constraints? Or, do you really mean it's the problem of "make.conf" being common for several machines (as you say above), as opposed to the binaries being shared? If so, I still don't understand.
