What about Lite-2 ? 4.4BSD is the encumbered version that contains some USL code - execve(), certain parts of the tty code, a few other things (none having to do with VM, however). 4.4BSD-lite is 4.4BSD without the encumbered stuff. 4.4BSD-lite2 is an update to 4.4BSD-lite. FreeBSD is based on 4.4BSD-lite with the missing stuff written from scratch plus many major improvements and additions (this is probably an understatement :-)). -DG David Greenman Core-team/Principal Architect, The FreeBSD Project From owner-freebsd-chat Tue Jul 23 00:45:16 1996 Return-Path: owner-chat Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id AAA24035 for chat-outgoing; Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:45:16 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ng.netgate.net (narf@ng.netgate.net [204.145.147.10]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id AAA24030 for ; Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:45:14 -0700 (PDT) Received: (from narf@localhost) by ng.netgate.net (8.7.4/8.6.9) id AAA21735; Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:51:48 -0700 (PDT) Date: Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:51:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Matt Clark To: "Michael L. Lite (or Lite-1) is 4.4BSD without the ``encumbered'' code, i.e. everything that was claimed by AT&T has been ripped off. The result is a free but incomplete (non-functional) system. Lite-2 is a bugfix upgrade. -- cheers, J"org joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de -- http://www.sax.de/~joerg/ -- NIC: JW11-RIPE Never trust an operating system you don't have sources for. ;-) From owner-freebsd-chat Tue Jul 23 00:56:23 1996 Return-Path: owner-chat Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id AAA25157 for chat-outgoing; Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:56:23 -0700 (PDT) Received: from zaraza.bofh.org.il (root@zaraza.bofh.org.il [192.115.153.33]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id AAA25146 for ; Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:56:16 -0700 (PDT) Received: from zaraza.bofh.org.il (sgt@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by zaraza.bofh.org.il (8.7.5/8.7.3) with ESMTP id KAA06302 for ; Tue, 23 Jul 1996 10:53:25 +0200 (IST) Message-Id: <199607230853.KAA06302@zaraza.bofh.org.il> X-Mailer: exmh version 1.6.7 5/3/96 Organization: Bastard Operator From Hell, Israel Rulez: FreeBSD Sux: Linux, Windoze, IDF & Netscape To: freebsd-chat@freebsd.org Subject: Re: New daemon artworks :-) In-reply-to: Your message of "Tue, 23 Jul 1996 00:51:48 MST." This is an interesting case. If this had been a Danish company, they would have been in a bad stew. 1. They are misrepresenting themselves (admittedly rather clumsily) but the email is meant to look like it comes from some disinterested third party, and not from CHAG itself. 2. It's illegal to advertise this kind of financial "information" as "door-sales" material, which this would be, considering that it is sent to named individuals. 3. Having broken the law, they would be suspended and probably severly punished by the stock exchange... Ahh the pleasures of civilization. You may want to Alert the NYSE to this little happening, and in particular if either some heavy duty people complained (In case you have a yuppy Cousin in Wall Street :-) or a lot of people bugged them about it... mail-bombing and other such methods should not be used until all other options are exhausted. -- Poul-Henning Kamp | phk@FreeBSD.ORG FreeBSD Core-team. http://www.freebsd.org/~phk | phk@login.dknet.dk Private mailbox. whois: [PHK] | phk@ref.tfs.com TRW Financial Systems, Inc. It wouldn't be astoundingly complex, you just have to ditch the notion of descriptive markup. There is nothing in the ISO8879:1986 that says "SGML documents must use descriptive markup", it is just the philosophical point of view. You could just as easily make a DTD that is strictly procedural markup. In fact, there was a thread in comp.text.sgml some time back about crafting an SGML declaration and DTD that would make RTF documents valid SGML. It could almost be done. You could come up with something that looks very much like troff as well. > The problem, as I see it, is that if you are going to have to > resort to using icons for tools, you could end up with > such a large number of icons (and remember, each of these > icons must be large enough for a few knobs (or does the icon > grow larger when we drop something on it to allow finer control?)) > that the whole system becomes unuseable. This is a problem, and its solution lies in shifting the focus from GUIifying an existing command line tool, to looking at the user tasks and developing what may well be a completely different approach to the same end. Analogy: instead of designing a new screwdriver, look at the task of fastening things and ponder whether a new fastener would be even better. On the Macintosh, there is no parallel to the ls command; they have taken a different approach to the task locating files. > Or, maybe in practice it's not necessary to have more than a single > row of icons. Good question. I quick head count on /sbin /usr/sbin /bin and /usr/bin shows 611 commands. How many are used and of those, how many are commonly used? [I was going to do an analysis of a heavily used box here, but my little command pipeline ran for 40 minutes and was sucking over 100 megabytes of physical ram before I killed it (to avert being flamed for inappropriate resource usage).] -john == jfieber@indiana.edu =========================================== == http://fallout.campusview.indiana.edu/~jfieber ================ From owner-freebsd-chat Thu Jul 25 07:54:17 1996 Return-Path: owner-chat Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id HAA03834 for chat-outgoing; Thu, 25 Jul 1996 07:54:17 -0700 (PDT) Received: from pop1.sirius.com (pop1.sirius.com [205.134.253.71]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id HAA03825 for ; Thu, 25 Jul 1996 07:54:13 -0700 (PDT) Received: from ppp014-sm2.sirius.com (ppp014-sm2.sirius.com [205.134.231.14]) by pop1.sirius.com (8.6.12/960710) with SMTP id HAA09300 for ; Thu, 25 Jul 1996 07:53:26 -0700 Message-Id: <199607251453.HAA09300@pop1.sirius.com> X-Sender: jgrosch@pop.sirius.com X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Light Version 1.5.2 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Thu, 25 Jul 1996 07:53:54 -0700 To: chat@freebsd.org From: Josef Grosch Subject: Caldera vs. Microsoft Sender: owner-chat@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk FYI: (From the 25 July 96 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle) "MONOPOLY SUIT: Caldera Inc., a small Provo-based company, has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft Corp., accusing the computer giant of monopolizing the software industry." This risk can exist because your site will not be receiving security patches on a regular basis from a vendor (or third party). In cases where intruders are exploiting a vulnerability, operating system vendors may have analyzed the vulnerability and released security patches for their operating systems. On the other hand, sites with freely available OS versions but without the expertise to develop and install patches may remain at risk from the vulnerability. Yea, right! Linux maybe -- FBSD, no! I've seen more security patches from FreeBSD, Inc. than I ever have from Sun. I'd say FreeBSD rivals *every* commerical vendor out there. They plan on making the January 1997 issue devoted to Linux. January 1997: Linux Proposals due:3 September 1996 Manuscripts due: 1 October 1996 Using PCM/CIA cards under Linux Writing your own Linux device driver An index to available Linux device drivers Running non-native applications under Linux Using Linux as a dial-on-demand PPP server Yuck! IMHO, I'd say FreeBSD would make a better "dial-on-demand PPP server" than Linux. [no, I'm not trolling for a flame war] It would be neat to see articles about FreeBSD also. Maybe if there are experienced people that could write simular articles for FreeBSD we could get more exposure. -- David (obrien@cs.ucdavis.edu) From owner-freebsd-chat Sat Jul 27 23:51:35 1996 Return-Path: owner-chat Received: (from root@localhost) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) id XAA02419 for chat-outgoing; Sat, 27 Jul 1996 23:51:35 -0700 (PDT) Received: from irz301.inf.tu-dresden.de (irz301.inf.tu-dresden.de [141.76.1.11]) by freefall.freebsd.org (8.7.5/8.7.3) with SMTP id XAA02408 for ; Sat, 27 Jul 1996 23:51:32 -0700 (PDT) Received: from sax.sax.de by irz301.inf.tu-dresden.de (8.6.12/8.6.12-s1) with ESMTP id IAA11467 for ; Sun, 28 Jul 1996 08:51:30 +0200 Received: (from uucp@localhost) by sax.sax.de (8.6.12/8.6.12-s1) with UUCP id IAA11969 for chat@freebsd.org; Sun, 28 Jul 1996 08:51:30 +0200 Received: (from j@localhost) by uriah.heep.sax.de (8.7.5/8.6.9) id IAA07031 for chat@freebsd.org; Sun, 28 Jul 1996 08:50:17 +0200 (MET DST) From: J Wunsch Message-Id: <199607280650.IAA07031@uriah.heep.sax.de> Subject: Re: New daemon artworks :-) To: chat@freebsd.org Date: Sun, 28 Jul 1996 08:50:16 +0200 (MET DST) Reply-To: joerg_wunsch@uriah.heep.sax.de (Joerg Wunsch) In-Reply-To: from David Kelly at "Jul 27, 96 04:54:06 pm" X-Phone: +49-351-2012 669 X-PGP-Fingerprint: DC 47 E6 E4 FF A6 E9 8F 93 21 E0 7D F9 12 D6 4E X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4ME+ PL17 (25)] MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Sender: owner-chat@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk As David Kelly wrote: > >(Now i guess i gotta bug my boss for a video card with 4 MB RAM so > >that i can use 16 bpp... ;) > > I think I'm running 16 bpp on a Mach32 with 2M DRAM at 1024x768.
