I do have model numbers though. The card is marked: IBM/QIC-02 HOST ADAPTER 05-00726-01 REV K I have enough adapters to put in all of my FreeBSD machines so it would be a great unit for backing up these machines if I could find the necesary drivers. ---------------------------------------------------------- Scott A. You will want to recompile the kernel and remove the sio3 probe as detailed in the FAQ after you get installed. There's a conflict between the scan for serial ports three and four and the ATI chip, so here's how to fix it. When you boot from the floppy and it asks for Boot: type '-c' (no quotes) and when the prompt comes up type 'visual'. This will allow you to tell the kernel what not to scan as you've got a conflict problem. Specifically you need to disable the probe for *all* of the serial ports. This will allow you to then boot the machine. Next you'll need to edit sio.c and comment out the two lines that handle serial ports three and four (they're a ways down the listing). Finally, you need to build a custom kernel. This kernel will contain the new sio.c that will automatically *not* scan for serial ports three and four and this will fix your problem. If you need more help, give me a shout. After all the help I got on this one it's the least I can do. > p.s. Win95 and DOS are ok. The way FreeBSD probes for serial ports it causes the ATI (which has a bug, not freebsd) to respond as COM4. It locks up your screen (blank) and puts the monitor into power saving mode (if supported). To fix this quickly disable all of your com ports (at the boot: prompt type -c then at the prompt type "visual"). I believe the fix is in /usr/src/sys/i386/sio.c but I can't find where I patched it anywhere. I believe the problem in both cases derives from the fact that most serial ports do not use 16 bit I/O addresses - they usually ignore the most significant 4 bits. Therfore a serial port at x3E8H will confilct with a video device at (let's say) 33E8H. I believe some of the S3 chips fall into this category. I can't remember if the original IBM serial ports had 12 or 16 bit addresses (I have the old schematics around here somewhere) so the 8514 might have been OK with IBM serial hardware. I believe I bought a 4 port serial board once that was 16-bit addressable specifically to get around this problem with an S3 board. I'll bet the company's out of business for spending the extra four cents required to put a 16 bit PAL on the board instead of just a 12 bit one. ====================================== When philosophy conflicts with reality, choose reality. After much tinkering to configure the card to use the I/O, IRQ, and DMA expected by the generic kernel the response was: /kernel.GENERIC: wt0 not found at 0x300 Then I took a look at the configuration for GENERIC and realized it wanted the tape drive on the same interrupt as my network card. So I compiled a new kernel with the tape on a different interrupt. (I hate 8-bit cards!) Same message Hhhmmm... ---------------------------------------------------------- Scott A. It is based upon the Biostar MB-8433UUD motherboard and AMD 5x86-133 processor. The motherboard and processor together were $200 from a local computer store, although I've seen the same combo for $167 in Computer Shopper. The motherboard features 256K L2 cache, three PCI slots, four ISA slots and a ZIF socket. It will take 128MB although we have only 16MB installed. The motherboard already has an IDE controller and parallel and serial ports (16550), so you don't have to buy a seperate controller. It features Award BIOS. If you have a spare case sitting around and need another machine, this may be the way to go. I stuck it in an old Zeos case that a friend had, as well as the IDE spare drives I had hanging around. (you bought them, might as well use 'em) nsieve.c was compiled on 2.1R with gcc-2.6.3 Sieve of Eratosthenes (Scaled to 10 Iterations) Version 1.2b, 26 Sep 1992 Array Size Number Last Prime Linear RunTime MIPS (Bytes) of Primes Time(sec) (Sec) 8191 1899 16381 0.023 0.023 73.7 10000 2261 19997 0.027 0.028 73.2 20000 4202 39989 0.055 0.061 67.1 40000 7836 79999 0.110 0.140 59.5 80000 14683 160001 0.220 0.300 56.2 160000 27607 319993 0.440 0.652 52.3 320000 52073 639997 0.879 1.375 50.1 640000 98609 1279997 1.758 2.996 46.4 1280000 187133 2559989 3.516 6.341 44.3 2560000 356243 5119997 7.033 13.163 43.1 Relative to 10 Iterations and the 8191 Array Size: Average RunTime = 0.032 (sec) High MIPS = 73.7 Low MIPS = 43.1 flops.c was compiled on 2.1R with gcc-2.6.3 FLOPS C Program (Double Precision), V2.0 18 Dec 1992 Module Error RunTime MFLOPS (usec) 1 -1.5632e-13 1.9762 7.0841 2 -1.0347e-13 1.3757 5.0883 3 -3.1197e-14 1.9411 8.7578 4 7.7938e-14 1.7007 8.8199 5 -3.2641e-14 3.5206 8.2373 6 -9.9920e-16 3.1383 9.2407 7 -5.5650e-11 2.6136 4.5914 8 2.7700e-14 3.2453 9.2441 Iterations = 8000000 NullTime (usec) = 0.0893 MFLOPS(1) = 5.8959 MFLOPS(2) = 6.6869 MFLOPS(3) = 8.0504 MFLOPS(4) = 9.0769 Right now the machine (t-rex.tioga.com) is my ftp server and cu-seeme reflector (the BSDI binary). When I first got my MO I was running Windows 3.11, and discovered that starting Windows without a disk in the drive guaranteed a lockup. I very quickly got into the habit of just leaving a disk in there until I want to stick a different one in. As a result, I've never tried booting Win95 or FreeBSD without a disk in the MO, because there is ALWAYS one in there. > Now it recognizes at least the number of sectors. > Only the sector size is still wrong: > (ncr0:4:0): "SONY SMO-C501-00E 3.02" type 0 removable SCSI 1 > sd2(ncr0:4:0): Direct-Access > sd2(ncr0:4:0): ILLEGAL REQUEST asc:24,0 Invalid field in CDB > sd2 could not mode sense (4). Using ficticious geometry > 153MB (314569 512 byte sectors) What's the capacity of the drive supposed to be? In any case, you may not need to worry about that too much. Try mounting a disk and see if it works. If it does, be happy. :) If it doesn't... I don't know enough about the internals of FreeBSD to take this much further. Just a hunch, but this really sounds like a problem with your kernel configuration, rather than a problem with the PnP stuff. Once DOS gets the hardware configured, it ought to stay configured as long as there is power to the board. (Or, at least, until the next hardware reset.) Likewise for the alpha ISA PnP patches. I have a hunch that the board really is configured OK, but your kernel is not configured right to see it. Are you using the standard SB16 addresses and interrupts? Did you notice the warning in "/usr/src/sys/i386/conf/LINT" about that? # Beware! The addresses specified below are also hard-coded in # i386/isa/sound/sound_config.h. When IBM assigned standard port addresses for COM3, COM4, etc., they used a range of 16-bit ports that did not conflict with anything. But the cloners ignored this, causing problems that have lasted to this day. Sender: owner-hardware@freebsd.org X-Loop: FreeBSD.org Precedence: bulk I have two Comtrol Rocketports running on my ISP on a Linux machine. Our Services Server ( news, mail, www, etc ) is FreeBSD. I am tired of having to re-configure, recompile, reboot the Linux because of crashes, locks, kernel panics, etc. One month ago the system was locking up the serial ports almost once a day. FreeBSD looked for me as a very very much stabler system than linux. I can't understand how comtrol did not made a driver for Rocketport under FreeBSD. I have talked to a guy from comtrol and he said that they do not have plans on supporting another Free operating system, as their experience with linux was a disaster. ( They did one for BSDi and i think it would be very easy to port it to FreeBSD ) Anyone already did a driver for this board for FreeBSD? How about all of we concerned about this problem make a flood of messages to the comtrol guys? Maybe we can convince they on making the driver for such a good System like FreeBSD?
